Decided to do a bit of whittling today. I wanted to test out my seax, and also do a variation on the usual spoons so I decided on a ladle.

Here are my tools and raw materials, a holly log.

Here it is roughed out with the saw and axe.

Further reduced with my knife, unsure of how to shape the handle I decided to have lunch.

While I was stuffing my face I recalled A walk I had on wednesday, walking along a riverbank I watched a beautiful mute swan fly in to land only meters away from me. So...

The ladle's now wrapped in newspaper so it'll dry out a bit slower. I'll finish it off next week.

Well done mate,i look forward to seeing the finished piece. Ive still not had a crack at making a spoon or anything as yet,will have to have a go soon.

Luke, excellent photos and tutorial. I didn't know you were a spoon carver also! We have something else in common, it seems. I'm looking forward to seeing more of that ladle!
