I've just assembled my kit for the Ashdown meet and it looks a little light compared to usual.

I've got it all in a 30l rucsac. Inc my Charcloth retorte which is a 500g coffee can.

Whats your kit consist of? And can you get it all in a ickle rucsac?

Blimey!
Does that include your sleeping kit and kip mat too, or are you just bringing a body bag and last will and testament?
So what is in your sack?

My kit consists of the following and kinda just about fits in a 120ltr bergen

1 x small 1.5man tent
1 x cheap blacks sleeping bag
1 x foam sleep mat
1 x bit of foam sleep mat to sit on
1 x 12cm billy can
1 x leather possibles pouch
1 x poncho
1 x change of clothes including trainers
1 x personal FAK
1 x Army blanket
1 x basha including cord
1 x gas stove
1 x night vision scope
2 x little walkie talkie radios (thought I'd give them a try to test the range)
1 x MOD machete

some little bits and bobs, whistle, gps, torch, head lamp, food and water... To be honest most of the stuff is because it's cold and/or I wanted to have a play or allow others to have a play.

Believe it or not, I haven't thought of that. It will be something easy in tesco's on my way down.

Everytime I've been out bushing it before the rifle takes care of food.

No sleeping bag, no bivi bag... good luck, I hope you won't be too much of a burden on everyone when you get serious hypothermia. Or maybe you'll just go in your sleep

I'm not that dumb!!!!!! The tent and sleeping bag are in another rucsac, I would never be that dumb, I grew up in the welsh foot hills, and have seen people go down with hyperthermia. I would never leave myself without shelter or warmth.

Don't worry mate, I had a feeling you were, but this is a family forum and were (in my eyes atleast) quite right in posting what you did. You pointed out something that hopefully will cause flags for others remember.

Given the current weather, I was investigating the logistics of bringing one of these. (http://www.villipohjola.fi/item.asp?Section=990&Item=643&Browser=ie&BrowserVer=6&img=1)

Realistically, I am going to have to find space for some of them (http://www.raymears.com/pictures/ACF18AC%2Ejpg) and a few of those. (http://www.hamac.net.nz/images/maxwell_house_sachet_2.jpg)

Becoming bound ( sometimes literally) to the limitations or conversely vastness of a central pack unit keeps us from thinking outside the box, er ruck. I have a german army daypack. Theres a poncho, Anorak and/or coat and sleeping pad lashed to the top, 9'x9' nylon sil tarp with premade lines and stakes protecting my chart(s) in the inside pocket. The twin side pockets hold water bottles. The slots formed by these pockets secure a Wetterling axe and small shovel. Spare clothing ( wool socks, Dachstein mittens, Balaclava, thermals, wool shirt ,trousers) takes up a goodly portion of the lower main. I have a large billy with my food, cup, spoon, matches and stove. A second Billy holds minimum toiletries and first aid. Now, on my person at all times I carry my whistle, signal mirror, torch, compass, firesteel, knife and diamond hone. I don't want to lose these essentials. My BIG, BULKY Wiggy sleeping bag in it's stuff sack is rigged with a shoulder strap and LOTS of paracord stuffed inside. On the other arm I have my hiking staff . I'm not Hienrich Harrer scaling the Himalayas or Rambo running through some 3rd world movie set with a M60 and 600 rounds. If I do have to traverse a bit of rough terrain that paracord allows me to go first and then belay my bag etc. afterwards. Unless I am specifically going on some major adventure demanding a single big unit for motility, the flexibility of looking like an overburdened dustbin is much easier. :pack:

Thats the sort of look I usually am!!!! I just prefer everything in 1 sac. For ease of transportation I may just check everything in the large pac (light pollution be warned) and wander round with the forest with the day sac.

The sleeping bag is just soooooo big, it fills the bottom compartment of my Karrimor 80 litre sac, and thats in its stuff sac!!!!

Thats a good system - it allows more versatility and scope. Nothing worse than setting up base camp and then having to lug your large sack everywhere if your out gathering food or materials or some such!! Its the combo I like to use anyway.

I have a mate with a low-loader...... :rolmao: :rolmao: :rolmao:

Seriously...I wrote out my kit list the night before last and I've got heaps (as opposed to piles :naughty: )!!!! A tarp, a basha, a tripple hooped bivvi and a two man pup tent and only one body to go in them lol.... a lot of the kit I bring will stay in the car unless people want/need to borrow it or more importantly play with it! It's a change for me to be able to bring so much stuff to play with so I'm taking full advantage! :nana:

At the moment, (flame suit on) I can't find my old 1, I think it was either nicked when my car was done over, or the ex threw it out. I have asked a mate in the ambulance service to get me a replacement, I don't know when its turning up.

I do have a MOD field dressing packed though!!!

Can I make a suggestion that you don't use a stuff sac if you want to fit more into your bag?? If you must use a bag use a bin liner or similar but not a stuff sac, they take up way too much space. If you pack your sleeping bag in as is, it'll mold to the bottom of the bag and then everything else just pushes in. I can fit easily twice as much into my bag by using this method.

That's a very top tip and works very well.....but doesn't really work for me as I always pack my kit into a thick drybag inside my bergan - the issue dossbag inside it's stuffsac fits the bottom of my drybag perfectly! My TA Unit seemed to have a bit of a thing for cold water and getting us in it at any and every opportunity...and if they could get us to run to it and then back from it so much to the better!!!! :-P

I'm looking at getting an ME drybag soon with the air valve on the side, you can put your sleeping bag inside this, stuff it into your sack and then stand on it, forcing it to the shape of the bag whilst getting all the air out, then do the valve up and it'll retain its shape.

Well I guess everyone else will have a FAK so it is not so serious but I would never go anywhere without one if carrying an edged tool, especially alone: it is so easy to slip and slice through something vital irrespective how good and experienced you are. Knowing my karma I'll go and slice through my arm this weekend or something and will have forgotten to pack my FAK now!

Mal I use the green army bivi bag and yes they are very good, not a light as some of these pertex ones but more durable and waterproof imo. I have used mine for about 10years and have even used it as a floatation pack to swim across a lake!

I'm told my (late) great uncle was a timber getter in New South Wales who used to live in the bush part-time and still used bullocks to haul timber out in his early days - he took off his big toe with an axe once (well you wouldn't do it again would you! )... imagine not having even the most basic FAK around if that happened!

I often walk in groups and have often thought at least one of us should be carrying a really good FAK, as I'm sure the most sophisticated thing we carry is a sticking-plaster.
