Ok so there you are it is night time and you are gathered round a lovely blaze after a hard day's bushcraft, talking merily with all your comrades about all things bushcrafty. There aren't words to describe this bit of the day, I'm sure you all know what I mean.

Anyway, I digress, what is your favourite fireside grub for this time in the evening?

My preference is GORP, the food of the bushcraft Gods. For those who don't know GORP stands for good old raisins and peanuts. Get a great big re-sealable bag and dump about a kilo of mixed nuts and raisins in it. Add m&ms of all varietys plus any other odd bits you want and shake. Bliss.

Mine used to be Sainsburys trail mix. Until they deciede that although it ALWAYS sold out it wasn't worth keeping as a stock product.:?:

It had apricots, cranberries, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, and lots of other healthy, nutritious, scrumy stuff:yumyum:

Need to find something new now...

Forget the squirel food as far as I am concerned. If there is a nice fire and it's night time then it has to be captured meat for me. It doesn't matter whether it's rabbit, venison, fish, or a whole sheep, but you can't beat meat.
On a really bad day I'd eat a baked spud.

Beachlover, I think he means just nibbles with yer drink, not a meal...:?:

Sounds like another great Sainsburys plan Jak. I have the dubious honour of working for someone who works for them. Bless them tho. Tee hee. Think they blew on the embers of my yearning for getting back to the woods.

Some times you have to. Especially if there no one nearby. :-)

<winces at implications of previous post>
I tried a mix of plain/ yog coated nuts & raisins, with a healthy dose of dried banana for good measure. Seemed to work quite well. If I could find cheap dried cranberrys I'd put them in as well, for their tartness.

For me its a few squares of Bourneville chocolate, while thinking about the day gone by and the one to come.

Another vote of chocolate here but I prefer Milk rather then dark. I also like a nice drink of chocolate and M&Ms (peanut of course).

mulled cider, proper Wensleydale (Richard 3rd by choise) and a wedge of Porter cake from a small place locally.

Or Maltesers but I can only eat them a kilo at a time.

I assume Richard 3rd is a make of Wensleydale rather than the rhyming slang

For me it would be a nice cuppa tea with a slice or two of bread pudding... :yumyum:

A close second would be a big bag of chocolate covered peanuts again with the mug of tea to wash it down nicely

There is nothing like watching the expression on someones face who has just tried 'biscuits brown' or 'biscuits fruit' (From army ration packs) for the first time. I only ever carry them to inflict on the uninitiated :o):

Lol....I've forced down the fruit when I'm really hungry a few times but during 6 years in the cadets and almost five in the TA I've never yet eaten a brown one!!!! lol

Does anyone know if the "AB" in 'biscuits brown AB" actually stands for "anal blockage" as the rumour goes? lol

Now that tomtom mentions it, I always used to keep a good sized piece of norwegian sausage to munch in my hammock at the end of the day. Can't beat it :biggthump

Jerky (plain dried meat with no salt or seasoning), dried honeydew melon, parched corn (although the last sticks between your teeth). Nice chew of strong twist tobacco to finish.

What's with all this 'proper' food?! What you want to do is get a mars bar, put it on a stick, and heat it slowly over the fire until it's practically just a glob of sticky sweet goodness on the end of the branch.... then whack it into a folded slice of bread. If you get it right then it's heavenly.

I like a nice cup of mulled cider and to toast a block of hard mature cheddar on a stick till it goes soft with a smoky crisp shell, then eat it right off the stick! :super:
