I had a odd shape off cut of 5mm 01 tool steel and thought of a making something with it, as you do!

This is what I came up with. The blade is not fixed to the handle yet, because I am not sure about the length of the handle. Its actually really comfortable, I can hold it in various way and it's confi in all of them. The blade is only 4" long, 2" wide, scandi grind with the same angle as my knives.

The idea is that is will be a sort of all purpose woodsman knife.

What do you guys think?

And remember you saw it here first, in case it reappears elsewhere...;)

Yep I have a similer problem after making a larger knife out of a bit of 18" 3/16" 01 had a bit left over

so i free handed a skinner and flat ground it etc was Ugly but comfey

then thought i would try an edge quench  for the first time

oops  :( ive HTed it any way after polishing up the blade the Temper showed a nice gold and the remaining cracks showed up purple:D
just to not waste it ive ground out the cracks to give a fwd finger grip and a curve to the clip point even Uglier now but still comfy to hold

was a nice clear bell like 'TING'

I really like that with the long handle, kind of a handheld bushcraft poleaxe.

Cheers, Michael.

Another couple of pics

Profile, a better view of the knife. The handle is 160 mm long and the blade is 120 mm.

View of the spine. I have done some file work on it. Not only does it look nice but it also has a practical purpose, it provide a better grip.

Anyone else thinking "seax" ?

Nice mountain man piece - or good for a Viking / Saxon period I'd reckon

Couldn't put my finger on it when looking at the pics, but by Jove I think that's it, yes :) Probably a bit short as a dragon slayer mind.

Nice work as usual JoJo :)
