Ok yeah I thought that and to a div its not a stupid question....it says dvd +re writable rw on the lap top and compact disc rewritable..... I have used the putor upstairs to dump music onto discs but I didn't want to mess putting the pics onto a flash plug in and then onto the putor upstairs. Be gentle with me guys I remember when pacman was the best video game out.

For pics onto a dvd you normally need to set it to dreate a data dvd. Is that it?

If you're on XP Dave you need a third party software to be able to write to DVDs.

Just another thought

Are you sure the DVD's you are using are +? Depending on the drive in the laptop it could be either + or -, or take both. If you have - discs it won't write them if its a + only drive, and vice versa.

Confusing I know, have you got someone you could borrow an extra disc from to test?

Ta again chaps I am a bit of a duffer but my mate is a bit more savvy so will get it round to his house....he also has some software to hopefully clean up the laptop and get it running a bit quicker.

Unfortunatly simply shifting files (especially JPG files) off your computer will not speed it up. It's not so much the files stored on your hard-drive that slows things down, its the programs that are installed on your computer that secretly run background processes that you don't know about that slows the thing down. Try going to Add and Remove programs and uninstalling all the crap you don't use or no longer need. Learn how to do a check the disk for errors then do a defrag, after all that restart and you should have some improvement.

The best thing by far that you can do to speed-up your computer is to backup and reinstall it back to scratch. After 8-12 months an operating system like XP or Vista will naturally get cluttered with apps, processes and registry keys, at that stage the only way to do a true deep-clean will be to reinstall and you'll certainly notice a difference!

Be warned about programs that offer to clean your computer a lot of the time 'Registry Cleaners' can do serious damage to your OS, leaving you with a computer that wont boot. And then other times these cleaners are a great target for viruses and spyware so be warned! As I said the best method for cleaning imho is an OS reinstall.

For the record, the DVD format is UDF (Universal Disc Format). In the meantime you could download your images to a memory stick before you get your computer sorted out. They're cheap enough and very useful.

If I'm allowed, I can recommend these people. No vat and free postage. Good luck.

I picked up a 1TB external drive for £70 and an 8GB memory stick for £7.50 from Tescos online no so long ago, that could be something to think about Dave.

I use convert x to dvd. This intuative app will allow you to put several 2 hour films onto one 4.7gb DVD and still retain decent quality.
To back up pics I normally use Nero.
Both easy to use and ConvertXtoDvd can be downloaded free to try from several places on the net

This is free and works with XP and Vista

Easy to use, just insert a blank DVD, open the programme, drag and drip you files and push the 'Burn' button; it really is that easy.
