View Full Version : Midlands November '09 'Re-enactment Market' Meet

decorum
04-10-2009, 20:55
Once again, a Midlands Meet will be held to coincide with a 'bushy-type' event.

In this case the event is The Original Re-enactment Market (http://www.reenactorsmarket.co.uk/) (TORM) and the weekend is 20 – 22 November 2009.

Location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/). This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey scale map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf)

At present the price is £4 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_09.pdf) (per person per night) - The entrance fee to the market is not included in the camp fees!

We’re booked onto PC11 – our usual spot :D .

There's no compunction to go to the market - If you'd like to come along to the Meet and just chill all weekend that's absolutely fine.

Sticking yourself on the list isn't committing yourself to coming along - but if you can no longer come along it'd be appreciated if you say so.

As with the September Meet, we can harvest some of the wood from the area specified by the site  .

Meet list:

decorum

Copy and paste yada, yada ...

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lie on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that
practice flora and fauna id
so on and so forth ...

This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

Hmm, well it had to happen at some point didn't it! - Real life's got in the way and I can no longer make the Meet  as I have to go to The Royal Yacht Britannia Annual Dinner Dance* :lmao: (I reckon that SWMBO owes me big time for this one! :lmao: :censored: ).

* Which isn't held on the Royal Yacht.

Wayland and Mesquite have stepped into the breach - the Meet will still go ahead - :You_Rock_

Because I'll now be elsewhere from the Friday to the Sunday I'll not be able to offer the supply service offered in post #14 until a future Meet :o

No idea at the mo, I'm about 10 miles away and my eye sight isn't quite that good :p - but I'd say that Steve's about right with:

: Need you ask after all the rain we've just had.

It'll be boggy on the paths for sure :D

From experience - the paths down in the bottom corner will be more than mildly moist. The majority of the ground on PC11, however, 'should' be reasonably ok. The local weather forecast is for more rain this week :Wow: .

If it's remotely likely to rain then I'd advise that folk pitch away from ditches, depressions and to not take advantge of a comfortable bed of moss!

Many thanks Woodspirits that's a really thoughtful offer.

I think the tent should be ok it has survived a couple of years at Santa Pod getting battered and rained on. Last time it was out of the bag was a canoe trip and it seemed ok although it's pretty faded. I've got a tarp I intend to throw up if it looks like it's given up the ghost.

If it leaks it's a good excuse to buy a new un. I've had my eye on a Vango.

In the area we'll be using there's well established oak, birch, ash, alder to name a few species and loads of hazel. The age varies from birch that are probably about 20 years plus old to 100 years plus for some of the oaks

If you can i would drive down to the cabin, unload all your gear then drive back to the carpark and park up mate. It's a fair tab down with all your gear on your back mate. Yep, you can go back to the car any time you want to.

Thanks Andy that's great mate.

I was getting my gear together over the last couple of days and lightweight packable gear doesn't seem to exist in my world.

Ideal opportunity to test it in the weather conditions we are probably going to get.

You never realise how bulky a kelly kettle is when it comes to packing and carrying it. I always take it canoeing with me so it's not much of an issue.

I think it's the fact that i have got stuff I've collected over the last 12 months and am keen to get it to somewhere I can field test it. I've picked my axe up and put it down 4 times thinking yup not going to use that.

Again thansk for the advice Andy really appreciated matey.

No worries mate. Glad i could be of some help. Canoeing eh ? always fancied having a go.:D Haev a good meet, it's nice at RC. We shall meet one day !!!

It was the canoeing that got me into the bushcraft to be honest.

I needed a hobby to get into while Mrs Boots was out drag racing.

Canoeing is awesome if you have never given it a try it's certainly worth a go.

A paddle down the Wye with a couple of mates followed by a camp out just makes for a great weekend.

I'm pretty sure canoes to hire down that way are fairly reasonable and it's one of those things that if you do it once nad enjoy it your hooked.

I can vouch for that, I have a trip on the Wye planned for Spring next year:D
This year's trip was the Great Glen (again) and was quite an adventure due to some serious weather. Check out SOTP if you wan to read about it.

Anyhow, I'm probably not going to get to the meet again:red: due to visitors but we may go to the Re-enactment market.
I have had a look at the site but was wondering if anyone knows whether there will be stalls there that will be selling leather? I fancy making some belts and sheaths.

hiya bootstrap, it looks like page 4 is showing 'lyons leathers' selling it off the roll with loads of choice.

Please guys, don't assume that driving down will be ok - if the gate at the car park is closed, the crew are working in the lane etc you'll need to walk kit down to the pitch.
If you are able to drive down, you will need to check that there are parking spaces at the Guild Field prior to driving down and if there are people using the Guild Field or its cabin you'll need to check with them that it's ok to park up while you shift stuff over to the pitch.

... Hi guys what is the situation when you get to Rough Camp?

Do you get directed to where everyone is pitching?

I'm thinking of leaving some of the kit I am taking with me in the car. Can you get back to the cars during the day?

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey scale map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf)

We’re booked onto PC11 – our usual spot.

There's no problem going back and forth to your car.

... I'm hoping to get there about mid morning...

If you're arriving at the site tomorrow (Friday), I refer you to post #67 (below)

...there won't be a problem arriving with time to set up in the light ... 3.30 - 4 pm arrivals should be fine

... wondering if anyone knows whether there will be stalls there that will be selling leather? I fancy making some belts and sheaths.

There are (usually) a few stalls which sell leather and/or leather crafting supplies. The widest selection of leathers is usually in the annex hall (the building closest to the car park) somewhere along the left wall.

What time is best to meet up with you all ojn saturday?

I would like to go see the market as i would like to learn leather crafting as i have an old knife which i would love a decent sheath for to do it justice as the original is showing its age. (from what i know its over 60 years old).

Cheers folks for a cracking meet. Survived thr trip home, guess your all still under Martins tarp "roughing it".

The roast lamb dinner was mighty and fine. Im sorry the cobber didn't rise as planned but your gentlemen for forcing it down. Think i'll have to buy a small dutch oven now as that is the way to cook when a vehical isn't too far away.

Kicking myself for not going to the market, as the forged items seemed very interesting.

Got a car load of hazel to finish my wattle hurdle style log store, so cheers for that, and see you all again soon I hope. Im going to try to make the Brass Monkeys meet as its been a while since I was up there.

Cliff, the new kit is rearly spot on, thanks for bringing it down.

All the best, Addo.

It's difficult in one post to say just how much I enjoyed my first Bushcraft weekend. Some of the new skills I have learnt and the new skills and techniques I look foreward to trying. I think probably one of the most important things I bought back from the weekend was the knowledge of what a great bunch of guys I met.

Honestly I had an awesome weekend and can't wait for the next get together.

Again many thanks to all involved in organizing this and special thanks to the guys that found me a space round the fire saturday night.
