View Full Version : Jacket for a Cold, Wet Scottish Winter
If this subject hasn't already been done too much to death, I'd be interested to here your thoughts: triple-layer Gore-Tex and a polar fleece, or double-layer Ventile and a woolen shirt? Also, do any of you wear woolen trousers in this country?

It depends on what your activity is gonna be really. If i was in the mountains walking or climbing, then it would be Paramo everytime, esp in the winter. If i was in lowland terrain doing bushcrafty stuff then it would deffo be my double layer ventile and wool garments underneath.

- what he said!
definitely have a look at paramo, best i've ever had. Parajo jacket and decent fleece and good base layer and you're sorted.

Are you going to be sitting around a campfire in it? If so go with organic materials eg. ventile.
I wear woolen trousers in the winter, have one Fjällräven pair which are amazingly warm. Shed water quite well too. You get hot walking up hill though.

Think about a pile/pertex combination (Buffalo shirts are the best known but lots of companies make them) - they're made for this sort of thing. Warm and more or less waterproof, but as the pile does not hold water it's not much of a problem and dries quickly. My biggest problem with mine is that I get too hot when very active - e.g. a stiff climb!- so look for lots of venting options.

Getting your base- and mid-layers right is as important as your outer layer, especially if that outer layer is Ventile. As everyone else has said, it depends on what sort of activities you have in mind.

For hillwalking and climbing etc id go Paramo all day long too as the other guys have said.
Though buffalos or montanes pile pertex with a merino base layer is another good option.
Not really sure on ventile as I have never owned one.
I still use Goretex but the paclite version and its only a summer spring type thing really as it spends most of its time in the pack.
u cannie beat the Buffalo shirts.. brilliant and very cosy on those cauld starry nite's..
Yeah, I came across the Paramo name when purchasing my Altbergs. I'll check out Buffalo, see what their website has to say.
Cheers all.
Lots of Buffalo shirts around up here for a good reason :D

What size are you? About to pitch a Musto Keeper jacket in XXL - suit 6'2". Tough as old boots, very hard wearing.
The Keela Munro is a superb outer layer jacket for foul weather.
I got one about six years ago and it's never let me down. If I'm out on the hills and it's raining sideways then this is the jacket I'd be wearing. I believe a lot of Mountain Rescue use them so they must be good gear.

I got mine from Sports Warehouse for about £130 I think
I have or have had, the lot.
Gortex, e-vent, Triple point ceramic, Down, paramo nickwax, polartec fleeces of myriad weights/types. Base layers, you name them. Barbour wax...
Lowe alpine, mountain equipment, Berghuas, Rabb, Buffalo, Jack wolfskin, Marmott salomon, I've lost count.
Not quite, keela munro - Rhymes with oh no. followed by, hey man I'm soaking.
What i prefer to wear, Montane extreme smock and/or extreme jacket, Superb for everything in the winter. From walking the dog to the northen corries in a white out. The only problem is that the salopettes really are too warm for normal, non, its blowing a hoolie use.
If i'm round the camp fire i throw a british army shirt over the smock incase of embers, and it works really well.
Regards, Mart.
