This was quite a small one really, there was one a few yards further on that had originally been a foot across, with a stalk which was twice as thick as my wrist! some one had decided to smash it to pieces, probably thinking it was something nasty.

I'd say so. Looks a corker, characteristic super fat stem. nice to find one good and young.

I find a good way of backing up the books is to do a google image search which shows loads of pics with the range of different shapes and ages. see here http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=boletus+edulis&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=

Of course some folk are capable of posting things as Boletus edulis that are not so it needs to be used with caution but it is a good help.

Even I would be confident in eating that for what it is. A real beauty as already said and worth pinching when your back is turned!

If that's not Boletus edulis, I'll eat my boots. Shame the slugs beat you to it, but that's usually the way...
