hi there a silly question perhaps but has anyone here got an Allan blade Bushcrafter or Packpal If there is a thread please link me to it
thanks
Nomadbushcraft
i have a pack pal at present and have ordered the bushcrafter. Persoanlly speaking I think the pack pal is excellent although their were one or two teething problems with it (bevel and blade coating mainly) but once I sorted these out I think its fantastic and is definately the knife I prefer to use at present I only hope the bushcrafter works out to be as good.

What's your pack pal spec. Gary ,full or hidden tang ,scandi grind or full flat ??
i got the classic pack-pal neat little knife, like it alot. Have to be honest, i really haven't used it much. To pretty to (ab)use.
am i right in thinking the pack-pal design has recently changed?

Scandi Rapid, lovely knife. While I was out the weekend playing fire steels I carved a spoon blank out of Birch in next to no time, and using a baton it went through a 2+ thumb thick branch in one hit, almost as good as an axe!!
I really cant wait for the bushcrafter and runt to arrive!!

I think the original spec was a full tang with a full flat grind.
The he mad eth efull tang with a scandi grind.
Then changed it to a mortised tang.
I ordered a full tang scandi grind with natural micarta scales and hollow rivets and it seems lik eit been on order forever
I like the look of his Field Pukko as well.

I have one on order. Ordered it about 8 weeks ago and can't remember what the heck I ordered now other than scandi grind and mosaic pins.
Spose he is overwhelmed and with Xmas and all there will be a delay.
Wait patiently I guess :?:

Scandi ordered maple mosaic pins firesteel loop etc.

I know what you mean about the wait - but I guess its no more or less than other makers, the price is certainly very competetive!! IMO well worth the wait.
has any one got pics of the new and old versions?
So far the people that have recieved thier Scandi Pack Pals have been very happy with them, I got mine around the 21st December (Cocobolo scales with mosaic pins and firesteel loop) and have been having a little play with it. As Gary said they are a very good little knife which are more than capable.
RB you won't be dissapointed when it arrives, Allan is very good at his craft. I also have a Field Trek by Allan and it is a veritable beast as far as field tools are concerned. When I order from Allan again it will probably be the Field Pukko or one of the original Pack Pal's.
tomtom, I have pictures of both as soon as I get a chance I will post them or alternatively you could look at this thread (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5303&highlight=pack) over on British Blades which has pictures of both the old and new variations of the Pack Pal, provided by Schwert and Magikelly, the original one on page two and the new one on page three.

I ordered the basic one like this and asked him to make sure the spine was square and not to add his blade coating as i heard they don't always work well with firesteels.

I have found found Alan very very helpful ,he was very patient with my barrage of questions and answered all my emails quickly.
I really hope the Pack Pal works for me as i would like to order quite a few more of Alan's knives .
I have always been a sucker for Bowie's and he does a nice range although obviously not very bushcrafty.
These are mine :o):
Original PackPal with handle of osage orange and mosaic pins. Scandi PackPal (original design) with handle of canvas micarta and mosaic pins. Very good knives.

he is a link to mine in the gallery. I got the modified coffin tang version. Very pleased so far although I haven't had the time to use it I would have liked.

The little voices made me do it :o): :o): :o):
I hate those little voices. The best way to stop them is spend all your money, that way the little voices can't do anything! A sound philosophy i think.

It is a bad photo Jake, it's micarta exactly like in rapidboy's post of the one he's ordered.
I like it a lot though and it goes well with the sheath.
Bill
At $51 US delivered here, this has to be one of greatest bargains around. Sharp * little * devil! Used it all weekend whittlin' this and that. Still quite sharp.
Must be good if someone from paignton says so!

Elsewhere in Devon we reckon they are pretty good too, I'm off to use mine today, they are a superb knife, with an excellent sheath (big improvement on your BRKT Nomad). A very practical item all round and superb workmanship.

Ordered a Scandi Pack Pal about three weeks ago, maple handle and plain pins. Reading this thread has got me impatient.... :yikes:

On the Pack Pal sheath ,is the fire steel held on the front or on the side?
The bushcrafter on his site has it on the front and it looks more compact but im not sure if it would fit like that on a Pack Pal sheath ??

On bushcrafter it's on the side i think.

On bushcrafter it's on the side i think.
On my Bushcrafter the firesteel is also slightly to the side. Not sure how practical it would be on the front. The handle would get in the way I think.

I'll be getting my Bushcrafter from Geoffery soon. Paypal just got finalized!!
Bill, where the firesteel is positioned is the same as both the pack pal that I own and the one that Neil1 has, it is also the same as the Feild Trek and I believe John's Bushcrafter.
Perhaps Allan has changed it since he put the original picture up :-)

Rapidboy's post shows a bushcrafter which is a bigger knife and so the firesteel fits on the front of the sheath. If I understand correctly all packpals should look like the one I posted (and you and Neil have) but bushcrafters have a bit more room on the sheath so it doesn't go by the side.

Soem really helpful posts here guys thanks, but I'm afraid I have a couple of other questions
firstly Would the kydex sheath work with a tecklok (fallkniven) belt adapter so that the pack pal could be worn scout style (horizontal draw at small of back) or across the hip not that this is the way I wear my knives but it would be an interesting variation for getting in and out of landrovers etc.
secondly, can someone show a reverse picture of the Packpal sheath, is the belt loop a clip or tunnel version.
thirdly and finally some of my firesteels are the ones without the palstic or wood 'handle' is the fit of the kydex holder suitably grippy to stop these fallling out?
Thanks

Check out Allan's site for sheath info. Nomad

I like the idea of a crossdraw setup.
I think you can remove the belt loop for wearing it as a necker.
NB, this is a picture of the back of the Scandi PackPal
http://img157.exs.cx/img157/5968/p1010084small6xv.jpg
I have reversed the loop and the hanging loop so that it sits on my left had side.
This is the front,
http://img157.exs.cx/img157/8218/p1010085small3es.jpg
This gives the comparative size of the Scandi to the Fallkniven H1 in the middle and the Allan Blade Field Trek on the left (the Field trek is a monster that would make a Northstar look small).
http://img157.exs.cx/img157/5944/p1010086small1ih.jpg
this is an image of The Feild Trek, the H1 and the Fox River (the same size as a North Star)
http://img157.exs.cx/img157/4961/p1010087small2fb.jpg
as you can see the firesteel loop is to the side, as it is with MagiKelly's Bushcrafter, which is why I surmised that Allan has changed the way he situates the firesteel loop.
Thanks for that leon-1 is that including p&p it seems so cheep wish i had done moor research now before buying my WS/Woodlore.

The knife costs $89, with a firesteel loop on the sheath it is $91 and I believe that the shipping cost is about $9 (it was on the last ones I received and I think $7 on the field trek) so I have slightly over quoted to be on the safe side

Alan is already way ahead of you. Forget your Tecklok belt adapter, order a multi carry clip form Alan. Have a look at page two of THIS (http://www.bushcraftuk.net/community/showthread.php?t=4402) thread for some pictures and more info. This clip is on a Runt but fits the Pack Pal and Bushcrafter too. It allows horizontal, vertical or angled carry. Of course it adds about $2 to the cost of the knife so it might be too dear (not).
The firesteel holder does have enough friction but as the firesteel gets used it will get loose. The best bet is to have a loop of something through the eye of the firesteel that loops over the other end of the firesteel where it projects from the holder. This will keep it all secure.
Now to throw the cat in with the pigeons. If you want your firesteel holder on the front simply take out the screws holding it on. Flip it over so the holder is in front rather than going to the rear. Slide it back to position where you want, drill holes for the screws and put the screws back in. Cut of the excess Kydex at the side and there you go. Alan actually forgot to add the Firesteel holder to one of my knifes so he sent me the holder on its own with some longer screws and I could have fittes it behind, in front at the side, wherever and it is not difficult to change so the world is you oyster.
Hope this helps

Nomad
Neither. It's a grind unique to itself. EDIT: reading closer i see what you mean. Yes it's a flat bevel, so you can lay the whole bevel flat on a sharpening stone and sharpen easily. :D
