Maybe a silly question, but does anyone here know if flat caps (tweed ones) come in markedly different designs. I want one that will give a bit of protection when I'm wearing spectacles, and don't want to just go and buy the first one I find.

I use a Tilley most of the time, but on occasions a good old traditional flat cap would seem a better choice.

I suspect that not many people here are into flat caps, bit thought it worth asking.

Thanks,

Graham

Yes there are plenty of different styles - some are really baggy (shooting ?) and some are not. Some have broader brims. That's all I know. I believe the different styles all have specific names. All of mine are of the non-baggy variety (rattin caps?). Plenty of info on google etc

There's the standard modern smaller flat cap. Older vintages did tend to have more material and looked better too.

Then there's the Newsboy or Gatsby which is the eight piece with the button in the middle.

Kangol have always made felted ones which are really berets with a peak!

I am a great fan of the flat'at. They fold up into your pocket, they keep the rain off, they keep your head warm, you can even bung them in the washing machine when they get too smelly.

Don't get one too cheaply is my advice. there are some cheap and nasty ones out there. Don't need to spend a fortune either.

Thanks, searching before I posted here found hundreds of people selling them but nothing about how the designs matched particular applications. So I didn't feel any the better informed. Maybe the designs haven't come out of function.

Chris,

..picked up in charity shops!

I never thought of that, but that would seem a good way of trying some out for minimal outlay.

I always fancied the Gatsby style - I may have a look in a few charity shops myself what with the winter coming in.

I have a couple for shooting - it's not a 'snooty' shoot but a Tilley wouldn't really be the sort of thing to wear. Favourite is a Laksen that is weaterproof with a fleece lining and flaps that come down over the ears. I look like a total berk in it, but it's great when the weather turns on you and you're trying to remain focussed on the task in hand...

Thanks, I will keep this in mind, with the exception of the eight panel ones, they all look the same on the internet, I now know to pay attention when I look at some in a shop.

Well, I've just looked at our three local charity shops and they had no hats of any kind :-(

I had (in fact still have) a deerstalker with ear flaps, and yes I look a total berk with them down as well, but great on the ears. Its always been a bit small for me.

Ah... I have just been informed that I look a total berk whether I have flaps down or up :-(

My normal response to critics is "I may look like a bl**dy idiot, but at least I'm a bl**dy idiot with warm ears".
