View Full Version : Anyone used a Jungle Hammock?
Just bought one of these in dark green from Tom Claytor, here:
http://www.mosquitohammock.com/
With the dollar conversion it worked out at £93 which I think is a good price. The hammock is pretty big and the tarp looks to be a good size too. It's a side loader and can be used upside down without the mozzie net, and has a double layer to slide a sleeping mat into. Has anyone got one of these?

They've got a bit of a cult following on hammockforums. The jungle is the longest model, menat to be nice and comfy. Tom Claytor is said to have great customer service
Thanks for the heads-up fella, seen a few bits before but there's some great looking gear on there.

Ordered it yesterday and already have confirmation that the order is packaged and on it's way to me.
What do you hangers recommend as an underblanket? Will a cheapo foam mat be ok? I don't want to spend out loads on a proper DD type one, plus they look quite bulky to carry.
Can I ask a question of some-one whose used one?
How does the "diamond" fly stand up to non-jungle / Scottish rain - IE horizontal not vertical ? Does it give good sideways protection?
Cheers
GB.

Here's the actual Claytor Hammock forum, hope cross forum posting is ok:

The Claytor hammocks have a double layer, so you can slide a mat in between the layers. This helps stop it sliding from beneath you during the night and also helps dissipate some of the moisture building during the night, by having a wicking surface between you and the mat. You'll probably need something added to widen your mat near the shoulders, otherwise they can get cold (mats aren't wide enough).
If you decide to go the underquilt route, they aren't all bulky, that's just the synthetic ones. I've just ordered a warbonnet yeti 3/4 length underquilt:

It's 12 ounces and packs to a tiny size.
I have a rather sad confession to make. I am a member of Hammock Forums! There I've said it, I've come out.
It happened when I started to look at Hennessys, but I don't visit there so much as I consider it a forum too far. EDCF, CPF, BCUK and BB are enough for anyone.

Candlepower is the worst wallet draining site on the net! so many nice torches....
I've got a Jungle Hammock myself, been using it happily for about two years now :)
For insulation I use a cheap foam mat, sometimes two. No problem and very comfortable imho.
The diamond rain fly has been fine for me so far, reaching about half a metre from the head and foot end of the hammock. When there's more wind, you can always fix it as close to the hammock as possible, but I haven't had any real horizontal storms yet when using it... I'm sure a big square tarp could offer more protection but I think/hope the diamond one is fine although you might need a bit more perfection when setting it up in crappy weather.
Sounds good, I may be buying a DD big tarp and selling the diamond fly, but I'll see how it goes first.
