I have used a bedroll a few times for day hikes in the fall and they are useful, but very limited. I do it more for a feeling of nostalia than anything. Here is some info on them. They are a little Civil War heavy, but worth the reading.

After the Civil War, when the army began to focus Westward and had abandoned the bedroll and used more packs, the Native Americans referred to them as "Walk a' Heaps."

I know I have felt that way sometimes when I have overpacked.
