View Full Version : Midlands September '09 Meet.

decorum
15-08-2009, 23:09
Meet dates: 11 - 12 - 13 September 2009 - Friday evening to Sunday mid-afternoon.

It's not a problem if you'd like to come along but aren't able to do both nights!

We're booked, as per usual, onto pitch 11.

Location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/). This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey Scale (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) map

At present the price (per person per night) is £4 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_09.pdf).

Important:

There is a quite sizable event being held on the sites' main field over the weekend, please arrive on site no earlier than 5pm. The field adjacent to our pitch will be in use by another group.

EDIT:

Providing that it/they're dropped and left tidy, we have permission to go into an area* and drop as many hazel spars/boughs/trunks as we like at this Meet. So natural shelters could be an option if someone/anyone is interested  .

* It's a specific area that, periodically, has got to be levelled on the basis of safety and site maintenance ~ and it (almost) backs onto pitch 11 :D .

EDIT 2: I've just realised that omitted this for a few Meets :o .

All BcUK members are welcome at Meets - each member is responsible for themselves and their own actions. If you bring a non-member with you then you need to be willing to take responsibility for them (and their actions).

Please remember to respect other users of the site.

Any member who is under 18 must have a parent/legal guardian in attendance.

Meet list:

Copy and paste yada, yada ....

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lie on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over et.c
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site can have strong opinions about that
practice flora and fauna i.d
so on and so forth ...

This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

A quick bump/reminder on the subject of the chance to do a bit of shelter building at this Meet - just in case anyone's missed it and is interested in this opportunity.

This isn't a subject area that can always be easily tried or practised (unless you have your own permission) and there aren't that many times that a group can go in 'mob-handed' to gather the materials for a multitude of shelters.

Elines

I would love to have a go at building a shelter - don't think I would actually be spending the night in it though - less than a year ago I hadn't even slept outside for over 40 years so I am still getting there.

What kit would we need? I have an axe but to be honest I am now thinking that it is potentially too dangerous for me to use when I am tired and would prefer to stick with a knife and folding saw.

Also - whilst I know Rough Close is not a place for formal teaching:

will there be someone to give some pointers,
do know-nothings like me need to mug up on the theory of shelter building and if so
what is recommendedDoes any of this rule me out from making a shelter ie:

won't be sleeping in it
won't be using an axe
need help/advice on what to do(hope not)

That's good thinking regards tiredness and sharps Elines. However you can build a shelter without anything like that if necessary but a knife and laplander saw will be more than adequate.

As for your first set questions yes there'll be several people with knowledge of making shelters... if not we'll all have fun trying to work it out :D
Mug by reading a couple chapters about shelters in any bushcraft book. Ray Mears, Mors Kochanski are a couple good sources.

In answer to your next set of question the answer is no to all three. People will be welcome to join in regardless of knowledge. That's the fun of moots, everyone is friendly and helps out If you want know/learn something just ask and no doubt someone will be able to answer your question :)

Well put Steve :D .

As Steve said, good reasoning  .

The area we can go into to gather the shelter material is a bit ... 'over grown' ~ there isn't the space to swing an axe at the moment. So knife and saw will be the primary tools for the job.

More than likely, have a look here (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24079) and get far more thatching than you think is enough

Absolutely not  . It's the same as choosing to sleep in a tent or under a tarp, it's entirely down to individual choice  .

You really dont need to worry about having techniques or anything. about half the people will most likely do their own thing anyway, even if that involves just reading a book quietly somewhere. The meets are about having fun, and everybody will welcome you.

Alright everyone, this is a long shot but is anyone bringing any excess gear for swaps? I'm desperately after a grey or green wool army blanket to make a woodsman's overshirt out of... I've got a pair of cold weather trouser liners in large(36-38) I could swap, failing that let me know what you're after. I could make you a sheath for a mora or a cruisader cup lid or something like that instead. I know I could buy a blanket from Endicott's but times are tough, I'd rather swap things I don't need! Cheers, Chad

Alright Mesquite

I've never had a go at dying wool but if it can be done I'm well up for it! If I don't have anything you're interested in I can happily part with some beans. The reason I didn't want to mail order one was because of postage, I'm sure it would be worth more than the blanket or equal to it. Thanks for that, see you at the meet!

I think the wood at Rough Close is one of the best ive camped in. Very diverse in native species and age, and a joy to look at this time of year.

And finally, a couple of pics from me ...

A path, renewed during the weekend.

And finally ...

Something that didn't bite me over the weekend.

EDIT: I should mention, for clarity, that the fire-poi were being used by members of the sites' crew and that they were being used in the sites' campfire circle and not on PC11.

... apologies for not attending I didn't have any details saved ...

Not a problem  .

... hope fully I will be able to make the next one.

Providing the site isn't booked out (doubtful), the next one will be 20 - 22 November - which is the same w/e as the TORM (http://www.reenactorsmarket.co.uk/) reenactment market.

For all ...

The market is down the road (10 or so miles) from the site - as with the Outdoor Show Meets, there is no obligation to go to the event.

:D There are few people that look as relaxed in the woods as Addo, the mark of a true woodsman in my book.

Great pictures, thanks for putting up Gary. Must admit I do like Rough close. Its a cracking wood and very easy to relax there.

Luckily Ive managed to run a little short on hazel poles, as my latest log shelter has become a grander scheme than I had planned, so I best pop down in November and help clear some more. ;) :D

Forgot to mention! I was sitting a few row's back from Two Dogs at the recent Ray mears lecture in Birmingham, and I thought his reply to the question about forum's was a little unfair!
Nice one for giving us all a mention anyhow.. I'm sure we would all prefer to just get out there and do it for real. He should have chose a better response I think!
Thats my 2 pence worth!
