Well, I wanted to try a few different materials and shapes to handle these 95mm carbon polar whittlers and a lauri. The unknown hardwood, hopefully someone can ID as I was given an old off cut as part of a deal at a wood yard. I thought it might be Teak?

I think I am going to concentrate on the flatter slightly barrelled shape as there seems to be slightly less roll in the hand when carving, than my previous handles.

All handles hand carved with a knife and finished with paper. Hopefully if I can sell them at the next two shows im working at, I'll be able to buy a grinder

Top one - Brass, brown leather, curly birch, birch bark, Teak? natural leather,...Curly birch. On a Lauri.

Middle one - Brass, Brown leather, curly birch (removed from the first) leather and possibly Teak. on a polar.

Bottom one - Brass, leather, and yew on a Polar. This is the rounded one the other two are the flatter.

Im quite fond of the middle one. But im cuffed how they all turned out. Quite busy doing three at once. Will be making sheaths for them at the weekend.

Hope you like.

Very nice Addo, you have been very busy :) I especially like the yew one :)

The wood you've got a query on looks like sapele (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapele) to me.

Cheers Steve. I thought it was a bit tropical, and worried about using it as I dont like all the felling thats going on with the older trees out there. Twas a small block though cast to one side in the yard, so hopefully I can put it to use.

Cheers folks, Im off to the woods now for 2 days and taking one of these puukkos to try out doing all the usuall bushy stuff.

Think I'll make a few more yew ones then as the last one I did went down ok too. :)

Have a nice time Addo, the knives look great and I'm sure that they will enhance your enjoyment of any cutting tasks.

Its just better when you have made them yourself.:)

Nice one Addo! They all look great, but the yew is my favorite as well! Looks like they would all be nice to use though...

Well the curly birch puukko worked fine at all the usual tasks.

The curve on the end of the blade is great for carving the depression for the hearth in bow drill, and the blade is plenty long enough for battoning. I quite like the edge being all the way to the bolster too for close carving.

Nice and comfy too, so I reckon I'll stick to these handle shapes from now on, and cut some more yew blocks from the cross cut peice ive got from years ago.! :)

I prefer the blade shape of the curly birch myself.
All of them are excellent though

Cheers, I think its a good blade cant fault it rearly.

Im going to start filing the top for use with fire steels, round the edge near the handle for comfort on the thumb when carving and drop the point slightly for game prep.
