Blade sharpeners.

I know how to effectively sharpen a blade, even honing and stropping as my face bears witness the good action of my straight razor, but I have a question regarding the sharpening of my other blades.

My blades consist of a Morris Newton billhook, a bi-metal Frosts Mora, an Opinel No9 lock knife and a Leatherman juice Xe6. I have searched and selected my blades for the tasks I have in mind, what I have uses for and wish not to have any more blades than this,(though I do possess blades as tools for my crafts). What I need, is a sharpening stone or kit that will do for the blades listed. There is so much out there, but I am clueless as to what might be useful for my needs. I am ideally looking for something which has different grades of abrasive all in one sharpening tool, is there anything available and does not cost the earth ?

And to add, another requirement, the kit or multi sharpener needs to be portable and kept with my tools, too big or too fussy in use, it is likely it will be left behind.

Oh as a side note, I found the bi-metal mora in it's leather sheath in an abandoned saw mill in the forest of Sweden, pitted with rust it was, but cleaned now, it is just superb.

Well from the little I know about folks that sharpen straight razors you'll not be doing that on and old carburundum stone, what do you have already? What grit series of what type of stones do you use? What are you looking for that you have not got?

The DC4 is a good option - although personally I now tend to use a duafold sharpener by DMT - its a folding sharpener with handles and keeps the fingers away from the blade of bill hooks etc. Bening longer than a DC4 it also allows a better sweep of knife blades etc.

Import from the US if you want one though - far cheaper!

For home sharpening I just use wet and dry in a £5 sharpening kit way as discussed

How do I sort out my straight razor, well, I use nothing other than the hone on my Rolls Razor. Slip the stone out of it's back and get to work with the addition of 3-in-1 oil as a lube.. Stropping is an old leather belt with the Rolls Razor red strop compound rubbed in. Basically the razor rouge is jewellers rouge mixed with an oil, I have made it before from my jewellery making rouge and grease.

I do like the £5 sharpening kit idea, especially the developed sharpening book idea, I will look into that.

I use the EdgePal Basic. It is built around a DC3 stone and is easily collapsable and carried in a small leather pouch. SEK 550:-

It handles most types of knife-blades, as long as they have parallell sides in the back, so the clamp gets the right angle. You can get amazing results!

Very similar to the Lansky systems with the obvious difference that you can use seperate abrasives.

You can also just get the guide for benchstone use for about ten bucks or so. Well worth the money which ever you decide to purchase. Sorry couldn't resist, was reading a book about the history of gangs in Dundee a month or so back, and though never as bad as the Glasgow gangs they did like their straight razors. I used to shave with one too and it was always important never to be distracted whilst shaving.
