View Full Version : Loch Achray Meet 18-21 September

As I have to return Docs canoe to him I thought I would make a long weekend of it. ~So with Magikellys help have booked a site on Loch Achray. It is Forestry Commision land and the site will be right next to the loch.
I went up there on one of Johns meets and had a great time. There are no facilities at all, no toilets, no showers but if I recall there is water laid on. (is that correct John?) The cost is a massive 75p per night.
There are no activities planned, just a chill out weekend. Plenty of conoeing and plenty of nattering.

Tis is alink to SoTP thread. http://www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=18255

I'll be there depending on brownie points.

September's so far away it's hard to say without casting bones but there's a very good chance I'll see you there.
Looking forward to it. :)

There's no water supply, no facilities at all - just as it should be. There's plenty of water in the loch.

Nope ;)

as said no water and no facilities. just good company and a relaxing atmosphere.

That'll do me, I can bring a water filter msr type job if that helps or will a good rolling boil suffice, not sure on the geography of Achray so will water be ok? Failing that ill chuck in some from home in a jerry can.

MagiKelly

Usually people have brought more than enough to use but boiling from the loch should be fine. Apart from the webbed feet and twitch it has never done me any harm.

Can solo come to the meet.

There are usually a few dogs. Usual under control and behaved rules but other than that no problem at all.

Big Geordie
17-07-2009, 20:14
Hi Guys,

Firstly John, have you decided that the dogs can't wear a target like the previous events.( cos it really makes them run fast!)
Secondly I've got to be at a daft dinner on the Friday, Association of Scottish Businesswomen (is Karen there?)
Thirdly can I throw my tomahawks when the others do their archery? ( You can take a boy out of inner city Glasgow but you can't ...)
I've also got a a hammock to discuss.
ATB to you and the girls
G
PS: Has Warthog got any days off booked? Cos I could do with crewing.:lmao:

soloman
17-07-2009, 20:40
Does that include my crossbow(ive got a target for it bout the size of a nissan micra)
Thats good solo is welcome he's usually better behaved than me.

johnnytheboy
17-07-2009, 22:16
no its just a pistol version, the owner of this house left it here when he moved out, i took a screw out of it and i only found about 50% of the parts that came off it, so the sights were missing. I tried a shoot at a bit of wood the other day and hit the wife trousers on the washing line :o)

soloman
17-07-2009, 22:29

would it be rude to ask someone for a wee bit canoe tuition?

Chainsaw
19-07-2009, 20:19
I can tell you all I know but that'll only take about 30 seconds! You'll need to catch up with someone with more experience after that! ;) I'm trying to figure out if I can get 2 canoes on my car but if I can, I'll bring a spare.

Cheers,

I'll do a session with you as well.
Will let Scott know it's happenng(and get him to lift the fungi books again).

BTW Alan, most arrows float like fishing floats with the feathers and nock bobbing out the water. Worth checking first obviously. :D
Oh hey, you get floating golf balls! Only just thought to ask google:thinkerg:. That's even better than chucking tennis balls, trying to knock golf balls out the air never gets old.

Would love to come (though sans canoe :( ) if I can get the time off, though I'd need to bring my mutt too? Are both of these things OK with everyone if I can get the time? He's good around folk and really just wants the odd pat on the head as when I bring his sheeoskin and some grub there's not mush elso that fills his time - bar rats and bunnies.
I understand if folks don't like dogs by the way so please just say.

Whats the crack with the fishing? google yielded results saying its fly only from boat only can anyone confirm?

Grooveski
16-09-2009, 12:50
If I remember right you're not even allowed to use your own boat:rolleyes:. Something about hiring them.
Can't say I've ever seen another boat on the water though. I presume they're based at the big hotel with the spires but not sure.

Venachar is an easy paddle away and less prescriptive.

Fish have been caught at previous meets but obviously it wouldn't be right to just say "sod them, do what you like!". ;)
Before anyone has a go, I don't fish freshwater. Can't be bothered with the regulations. On the odd occasion I have it's been with a permit and within the law.

Fishing from canoes / boats is controlled by the hotel i think.

Thanks to Ian and John for getting a date booked and rallying the troops, great location, great company and a good vibe as ever.

Good to put some more names to faces again and thanks to the Scots for being such good hosts again, I hope you'll have us back.

I've a couple of pics to put up when I find my camera :)

Yes, it was a good weekend. I was really worried that midges might spoil the weekend, but there were only a few about on Friday night and that was it.
It was a long drive to get up there, but worth every minute. Fantastic site and excellent company. There was only one fly in the ointment, well 3 really. Thought it was a free camp. It was ONLY 75p a night!!!!!
Am hoping Toddy gets a site sorted for New Year, and I will be up again.

As it was such a lovely day when we got there on Friday I was itching to get out on the water as soon as poss. I paddled over to the island and found a load of dead rhodie bushes which I battoned down and chucked in the boat for firewood back at camp.
I stuck one foot in the boat as usual and pushed off the island with the other foot. Nothing new there but for some reason I got a right wobble on. Possibly the stern was still caught up on the beach but I sat down and thought I'd handled it. The next thing I knew I was sideways and falling in the water, with all that nice dry firewood floating around me. I never thought a canoe would sink so fast so it's kind of taught me a few things about not falling in when conditions get tough on rough waters.

I did found out how good the exped dry bags were though. I have my camera in one of the little 1L bright green bags which was clipped on the thwart when it sank. Even though it was submerged completely for quite a while it didn't let any water in whatsoever.

Anyhows it was a great meet, I managed to get quite a bit of paddling in myself so I was quite chuffed. Even if I did have a soggy right Muck boot all weekend

A few pics of nothing in particular ...

Fairly enjoyable weekend, :D really can't wait till my canoe arrives, cheers to Chainsaw for allowing us newbies to paddle his brand new Reflection, (that's what I'm waiting on).

There was a fair swatch of different set ups; mine was a 2nd generation DD expedition with a Kathmandu tarp, I didn't bring my underblanket with me, didn't think I'd need it:rolleyes: , I had an old (plus 20yrs) -5 deg c down bag with a 3/4 old style therma-rest, which I must admit gave me a few cold spots during the second night. Time to dig out the new Alpkit Pipedream and the underblanket I think

All from me I'm afraid apart from this wee video of us dowsing the fire. This was the 3rd barrel of about 30 litres of water on the fire and it still looked volcanic!

I'm glad I came by for a wee while :D
It was lovely to see Loch Achray actually as a beautiful place to be. All previous experiences (people apart) have been miserable for me. It's usually so wet, boggy and midgie ridden that it's the last place I want to visit.
This time it was dry, the sun shone through, the loch was calm, the ground wasn't saturated, no midgies biting and there were enormous dragonflies :D
The photos really do show what a good weekend it was :)

Nice one organising this Wanderingstar :approve: Thank you for the invite to join the company, and thanks to everyone else who was there, it's good to put voices to the posts on the forum :D

Sorry I never made it up but as usual went a bit wierd at the last minute. That's strike three:rolleyes: - time to just accept that social gatherings and I don't mix.

Cracking photos, that hint of autumn in the trees makes for some lovely colours. :)

Hello All,

Well I finally seem to have surmounted the plethora of probs keeping me away: - Site going down, loosing my password, home hub getting fritz-ed by Kamikaze geese attacks on the local power-line and me generally being a klutz.

Had a great time at the Achray meet, good to put people to online personalites. Many thanks to Shewie for the disk, has been watched a few times from the sick bed and has cheered me up.

Must say that Achray is only up the road from where I live and it's not a place I've really explored - yet!

Cheers for letting me see and play with all the toys you brought and dispelling my worries about larger groups. Also the mutt says cheers for putting up with him... despite hit dead fish antics on the last day. :yuck:

Here's a link to the very few pictures I took over the weekend.
