Having looked at the rather expensive and fragile LifeVenture coffee filters, and desperate to ensure a decent brew wherever I am, I plumped for a CapheVn filter kit. (http://www.caphevn.co.uk/). Prices start from £2 each, and sizes go up to 8 mugs worth.

The filter comprises three parts: the main filter, a small filter sheet to act as a press, and a lid. I ditched the lid at once because I can't see the point of it. For a while I wondered how to carry it without the extra bulk, then I hit on the idea of filing off the knobs on either side of the filter (took just a minute) and as you can see below, it fits beautifully inside a LifeVenture mug (sorry, I don't appear to have permissions to put the photos straight into the thread).

There's enough space in there to fit a dozen brew's worth of coffee at least.

Making the coffee is very simple. Put a teaspoon of grounds in the bottom, and place the press on top. Add a small splash of water and let it soak into the coffee. Then fill it up. It takes two fills to make the brew in this mug, and tastes fantastic - I think because it soaks through very slowly, gently cooking the coffee as it goes (a bit like the cowboy coffee approach). The difference is, this doesn't have that Turkish coffee 'hit' of grounds in the bottom of the mug, in fact with a standard filter grind there is hardly any debris at all.

I much prefer this to the disposable filters - it's smaller, more environmentally friendly and tastes better.

(I've no connection to CapheVn, just a happy customer).

Happy brews!

Yes these are a great bit of kit, but I would say you paid too much... here they cost about 5000 VN Dong, about 50 cents... lol

But sreiously they are a good buy for those who cant strain things with their teeth...

Just a small cultural note on the coffee, as you say it takes a couple of fills to make a mug of Ca Phe, but its only meant to be filled once to make a small cup full, as its considered rude to completely fill a persons cup here, to do so would mean you didnt want them to come back since a full cup means you are unwelcome in that persons home / cafe/ business...

Just a heads up to understand why its not a "one cupful" filter...

The coffee bean ( Robusta only) was introduced to Vietnam to have a cheap source for the flavoured guano which is sold to the public in quantities.
Good to read, even if its too sentimental:

I must say my real life experience of coffee in Vietnam is a positive one... from a Ca Phe Sua Da in Ben Thanh or Cholon Markets In HCMC on a hot day. To a regular Ca Phe in a more upmarket place in Quan Mot in HCMC the coffee was always nice... but I'm more of a Tea person..

The little aluminium filters are great... Best Served with a glass with colour spots on...

Can Tho is not a bad spot Templar... Easier to get to since your govenment funded the bridge over the Mekong....

Are the pics of the 1 cup filter? They look like a superb idea, I was going to take the cafetiere camping next weekend. Pity the company is out of stock at the moment.

Anyone know of any other source of these?

~bit later~ ah, yes...ebay! Got a 2 cupper. Thanks for the heads up, couldn't have timed it better. The camping trip is for a mates birthday and is likely to get a little messy, hence the need for espresso. Superb heads up in fact.

That's the 2-cup filter I'm using there. Enjoy!

Glad you said that.

Wonder if the four cup might be a better idea?

One fill, rather than two.

Got the 2 cupper this morning. It's not that big, so if you want a mug of coffee then a 4 would be better. Makes a nice cup though.
