I finally bought a new rucksack to replace my webbing which was featured on my other thread. Hopefully this thread won't start another rucksack VS. webbing argument. This is a used Dutch military 35 liter rucksack. I bought it at the local surplus store for about £10 and it was worth it.

It has three main compartments, a thin pouch for maps, two side pouches and a pouch on the inside of the lid. There are draw cords on the front and around the opening

The staps are extendable from the top and bottom unfortunately there is not a buckle for your waits

As I said at the top this is used and there is still somebody's name tag inserted in it unfortunately I cant read Dutch.

Its contents are about the same as they were in my webbing. When I went home I found an old used handkerchief in it and a piece of black foam rubber in it I'll probably use the foam rubber for a pillow in my hammock.

No need for Dutch reading skills, just his name, number and unit (1st platoon, A group).

It's a nice pack and about the camo'ed straps, they camo'ed the outer side and therefore the backstraps (those will obviously reverse if you thread them thru the buckle) stand out big time!

Your rucksack previously belonged to

- C.K. Versteden (or: E.K. Versteden, as the dirt makes it difficult to read - if so, it could well be the pack of a certain Erik from Assen (north-eastern part of NL), a 2nd LT in the 140 Heavy Transportcomp. (logistics).
- registrationnumber 751122072 (72nd person born on 22 Nov. 1975)
- 2nd platoon, Alfa group

Could you tell us his bank details and his sexual preferences too?:lmao::lmao::lmao:

The black foam may have been to add padding on the back if hrd stuff was poking through, or perhaps a sit mat(not really a military thing though).

I like your kit in general i think you could get a much smaller book though(saying that when i started out I carried the full size SAS Survival handbook)! there are quite a few pocket sized Bushcraft books.

Collins Gem make a few useful Bushcrafty type books, (they're only 3" x 4.5" x 0.5") i have:
SAS survival guide (tby John "lofty" Wiseman almost the same as the large version)
Food for free (by Richard Mabey)
Trees
Fruits, Nuts and berries
and Birds(:27: you can get 6 of these books in 1 PLCE ammo pouch).

Did you add the bungee cord? it's a very good way to use the metal holes which otherwise might never be used I think i could do the same to some extent on my ALICE pack.

I planned a weekend camping trip with My PLCE patrol sack but found the pockets were just slightly too small for stuff like water bottles and mess tins which was annoying. but the add on straps on your bag, would enable you to carry extras like that.

Just a word of warning if on public land you might get away with the Opinel knife, but the larger one you won't, I've never been stopped but you never know.

The reason I chose that book is not to use it to learn survival skills really but because it had some interesting bushcraft things in it that I wanted to do will I was camping this week like making rafts, chairs, traps etc. And the fact that it was in color and had alot of pictures.

He's in the phonebook, so I could find out for you Rich :nana: :lmao: :D :p
On the other hand - it's nothing to do with the history of the rucksack ;)
