:lmao: With just a little ove 359 days to go ....

As with the ‘Midlands Outdoors Show Meet March 2009’, once again this Midlands Meet will be held to coincide with The Outdoors Show (http://www.outdoorsshowextra.co.uk/) 2010 . The show sets the date for the weekend as 26 - 28 March 2010 - I'll look into whether we can have the extra day again too  . EDIT:Meet is booked for 25 - 28 March

Location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/). This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey scale (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) map

Site fees are £4.40 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_2010.pdf) - please note the information below.

The camp fees will not include entrance to the show!

There's no compunction to go to the show. If you'd like to come along to the Meet and just chill all weekend that's absolutely fine.

Important notice!
Any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.

Edit (in italics):
Having read the’ Leave no Trace’ (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52806) thread and to pre-empt possible problems, I feel the need to add:

Forum members are responsible for their own actions at a Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for their actions whilst they are on site.

Forum members under the age of 18 are welcome. However, they must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).

You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee!

Fees need to be paid. It’s rare, but some people forget.

Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!

‘Appropriate’ behaviour: The site can, at any time, decline a booking – they can also ask* us (individually or wholly) to leave during the Meet. Be aware that other users of the site might be passing by our pitch at any time of the day or night – I do get feedback!

* i.e. Tell. The site is registered as educational land, there is neither a choice nor an ability to negotiate. Fees would still be owed!

Droppin kit off - The parking bay by the adjacent Guild Field is for the use of those who have booked the field (and/or cabin). If the field/cabin is booked for use then it is a requirement that permission is sought (and given) before you drive down.

Parking - vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.

Fires – Fire scars reduce the options of where and how we can pitch – ground fires can leave dips in the ground. All traces of where a fire has been need to be properly removed (not dumped elsewhere) and the ground left as close (or better) as possible to it’s natural state.

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

EDIT:

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lie on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over et.c
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna i.d
so on and so forth ...

This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

 I take it that the trading over the weekend was ... 'slow'

The show was the smallest ever in terms of floorspace and number of exhibitors, visitor numbers were down dramatically and several exhibitors made a loss - or so I have been told by a respected source......
The prices paid for even a modest stand are HUGE......
So - some fok will be folowing the trend to "retrench" and not go next year. If too many follow this continuing trend....th show will not be viable for the NEC and will just not happen!

I went the year before last and it was pretty poor then, definately not worth the drive to Birmingham for. Also, the aggressive marketing practices of one of the regular exhibitors leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I wont be lining their pockets anymore.

decorum
02-04-2009, 09:18
Thanks for the heads-up. It's pretty much what I'd expected - Less money to go around + higher stand rental + Less traders = Less bargains available :( . And lets face it, for most folk, finding a bargain is why most of them go to any show - I was lucky (not as lucky as dr jones though (:censored: - you jammy so and so :lmao: ) and sneaky :D .
I have one or two ideas that I've been contemplating for Meets. I'd intended doing them over a few of the weekends and still may as a way of gauging interest - so even if the show is a no show it should still be good.

I didn't go to the show due to the cost of getting in to the bleeding place and also being a bit skint. I took 3 kids to the meet which would of cost quite a bit and not forgetting the carpark fee.

Maybe the show should scale down and be held at rough close Phil?:lmao:

:lmao: I've been nattering with the site about hosting Podcast Bobs' alternative outdoor show :lmao:
We have the basic 'ok', but there are some logistical problems.

EDIT: For accuracy I should mention that using the site was Bob's idea and not mine.

Sounds interesting, but the cynic in me thinks those big time operators that could shift some kit at overly inflated prices (you know who you are out there) would only come along for that sole reason. Too many people were saying about how commercialised the hobby has become, I'd hate to see RC get used by that sort of person. Having John turn up and sell some of his wares at very reasonable prices is more acceptable, I doubt he sells these things at a loss but he doesn't rip anyone off. That sort of salesperson should always be more than welcome.

decorum
02-04-2009, 21:41
The idea is to get in the smaller, more specialised, trader - like backpackinglight.co.uk. Companies which are generally overlooked when folk look for kit.

That's not so bad. I used to enjoy Andrew (outdoorcode) coming along to the meets before it all went belly up. When it was working it was great, just a shame that so many people ended up out of pocket when it all went Pete Tong. Having a company on site with the goods for you to look at before parting with your cash is a much better way of doing things, the amount of 'schrafty kit I've bought that turned out nothing like I envisaged it from internet pictures.....

Here Here.
After rereading my post I now realise that my suggestion in jest could be the undoing of what we have at the midland meets. Anything grander than a tarp full of stuff on the floor for sale would ruin what makes the meets what they are (maybe???)

woodstock
02-04-2009, 22:07
The Midlands meet is basically a social get together where you mix as much or as little as you like, we had a few selling bits and bobs at bargain prices this time which I doubt you would get from companies no matter how big or small the company is, I personally think you have got it pretty much sorted as it is and if people want to bring stuff to sell or trade thats great

My life!
Of course I am ripping folk off!
The gear I sell is either second hand - and I get it basically free - or it is made by an incompetent who just has fun making things (me)!
Sell at a loss - no.
Sell at inflated prices - every time!
But not as inflated as in a shop...
where they have strange things callled overheads!
Keep giving me your money folks:D

Well, I still think they are competetive prices! I liked the Dragon Breath steel, very basic but boy does it fore off the sparks! I have a Jason01 fire steel, had it for many years now and it's showing some wear from use. I wonder if it needs re-HTing as I heard the hardness can reduce as they wear away. The outside is obviously the hardest and it reduces as you go towards the core. Either that, or if you do your steels individually......

:dunno:

We've had plenty more at non show Meets in the past  .

The agreement, with the site, for the 2009 show Meet was that the number would be capped at 100 - but I'd also booked the adjacent field for pitching tents on. Because we got no where near the max number last year I haven't booked the field this time - If the numbers start to get high I'll talk to the site and see what they say.

The nearest station is Tile Hill. The road and the road/footpath route are both less than two miles - the road walk is the slightly longer of the two.

Edit: distances were measured from the station to our pitch.

It has pics and posts about the last 2 Rough Close meet Jan 2010, plus the Rough Close meet sept 2009! .. I know its mainly about my set-up and Jimbo's (http://jimbobushcraft.blogspot.com/).. (sorry, will try to get around with the camera more often this March meet!) but I thought it would give an insight to new comers (and old) about things that go on''

Happy Blog reading.. some cool links included.. and any comments on the new 'Fire Crane' Grill Cooking system much appreciated!

It's fine by me  .

I should have thought to put this 'Sales/trades proviso' bit in from the start - my bad :o

For those making sales and/or trades.

Any trades or sales are to be conducted in line with the relevant BcUK guidelines - expanded to include Rough Close campsite and myself (when I'm not party to the sale and/or trade) .
I don't think that it's likely to happen but ... - No hard selling or pester power from either side of deals.

... What's your max Numbers ... ?.. Need to know how much Flint I'll have to bring for trading!..

I haven't, as such, got a max number - I'll talk to the site about a numbers limit if the list hits 50 (including extras).
On average, between two thirds and three quarters of those who stick their names down to come along actually make it to a Meet - real life gets in the way. For the 2009 outdoor show I had an agreement with the site that the total number would be capped at 100 and I'd booked the adjacent field for a 'just in case' over flow - I haven't done this for this years show Meet. In the end 60 names (including extras) were on the Meet list with an attendance of 34.

The info above might not help - but it should give a rough guide.

SimonM's post over on the Brass Monkeys' Meet ...

Also a fire pit had been turned out at the edge of the field

... has reminded me of a natter I've had with some of the RC site management team.

In the past year there has been a lot of ditch work been done on site.
Unfortunately there have been cases recently, where site users have dumped the dregs of their fires into the ditches. In one particular area it's plain to see that people have noticed that others have done it and have followed suit and have lobbed in part burned logs into ditches :( .
The site is asking us, as a group of regular and trusted site users, to keep an eye out and to let them know (through myself) if we find anything amiss - they're not asking us to shift it, just to let them know.

decorum

As with the ‘Midlands Outdoors Show Meet March 2009’ ... date for the weekend as 26 - 28 March 2010 - I'll look into whether we can have the extra day again too

I know that I've mentioned this at Meets - The Meet will run from 16.00 hrs Thursday 25 March.

... At present the price (per person per night) is £4. The price might increase in the new year, I'll let you know.

The price has increased by 40 pence. The price is now £4.40 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_2010.pdf) per person per night.

Important notice!

A lot of the time I'm breaking £20 notes to give change - If you base this on a two night Meet with 15 needing change it means that I'll need to bring £18 in small change and have 15 £10 notes - a grand total of £168.

During the January Meet a few people suggested a way around this problem. That the difference between the fees due and the money given to me be considered a donation to Rough Close to help with site maintenance etc and from this Meet onwards this is what I'm going to do. I'll edit this info into the OP.

Once again, there's no compunction to go to the show. If you'd like to come along to the Meet and just chill all weekend that's absolutely fine....

Sticking yourself on the list isn't committing yourself to coming along - but if you can no longer come along it'd be appreciated if you say so.

Just reiterating  .

As above - just to reiterate. There are a fair chunk of first timers and this is a rule which needs careful adherance by all.

If anyone 'IS' thinking of Hammocking, Sleeping bags 'DO' compress inside hammocks! (giving feathers no room to breath!) .. and Thermarests 'DO' slip out from under you, ending up at your side! When using a hammock I stick a barely inflated thermarest inside the sleeping bag - then it can't slip from under me. Not a perfect solution, but it works for me.

I've used a space blanket underneath me with my roll matt in the bottom layer in winter and it works alright. It's a bit crinkly sounding everytime you move though. I have, having read the 'Leave no trace' thread, amended the OP :(.

Maybe we could all spend 15mins having a walk around when we get there, then a 5min check before we leave!

(Id be more than happy baggin it up, slapping a stamp on it, and posting it to cadburys USA!!.. asking them to consider making bio-degradeble wrappers with that huge investment budget they're gona use!):lmao:

I think that it's best to do as you did in January. Look at a pitch, work out if it'll work for your set up ... and if needed do a bit of a tidy. After that if we, as a group, pick rubbish up as we move around then it becomes a shared process  .

I've had a natter with the site management and they need us to limit the number attending to 50 registered members (this doesn't affect the extras) and as of this post, the list is 44.

Had last years attending number been significantly higher then we'd be nowhere the limit* - because I'd have been able to justify booking the adjacent field for this years event.

You're right, there should be 44 names on the forums' Meet list.

My fault for causing confusion :o . I keep a separate list of names and there are two extras in that tally* - which is why I'd said 4 spaces left :sad6:

We've been discussing, off thread, about a canopied area - from what I understand, the canopy is 20' in diameter.

This area will be set aside to those who are doing craft 'stuff' and also to trading (there is no compunction to trade under the canopy).

Unless we decide to set times that area can soley be used for trading there will be a segregating barrier.

As the canopied area will be a working area it would be wise to not pitch too close if you prefer (or need) to 'sleep in' .

It shouldn't need saying, but ...

If you are using something which, by design, should be sharp, pointy, pokey or bludgeony, be aware of your surroundings and others in it - before you need to.

If you are in an area where one or more persons are using things which, by design, should be sharp, pointy, pokey or bludgeony, be aware that you are the softer item and need to take avoiding action - before you need to.

Just had an invite to a birthday party of a good friend I don't see enough of, so with much disapointment I must cross myself off the attendee list. I may try to pop down on the Thursday night and leave early Sat morning but only if I have no work on.:dunno:

If you could amend the list please Phil I dont want to copy and paste it incase you miss it (I don't think you would miss it though:))
I hope to get to the meet even if for a short while.

Just turn up head into the woods and bump into Decorum and pay him your fees. Check out the map of the site to find the rough area you need to make for.

"Work" - the evil that the few face so that the many can be scrounging dole-bludgers (not counting the genuinely needy here!). One of the harsh realities of life.

goodjobWell organised Dudes. I will be coming Saturday PM after a quick trip to the NEC with the Son in Law. Not camping though as our local (Cambridgeshire) group has a meet the same weekend, at Little Abbington Scout Camp, near Cambridge.
I'll bring a few homemade blades including some draw, spoon and whittler knives if I can get them finished in time to swap/sell/trade/what have you if thats OK? See what else I can rustle up as well. May have a few drawstring bags

WolfCrafter

Hi Decorum, as Whittlerkev Re 'Camb meet' stated..
Me and Badgeringtim are organising the Cambridgeshire Bushcrafters into shape along the same lines as the respectible Rough Close site, it's our first ever meet (Little Abington), and as such I can't miss it! Anyway, the only free date asap was the same weekend as yours! (in future we will try not to make them clash!)
As I've already booked the time off, and want my week to be a Bushcraft bonanza, I'd still like to come over for Thurs/Fri nights (Dont wana miss you guys!) but I'll be departing early sat to rush over for the 'kickoff first ever meet of the Camb group'.. I hope it doesn't inconvenience you.. Point is, will this pos free up a position for a weekender spot only person?? (or would you rather me not come at all, being a traitor en all!)

I'll still be there for trading flint bits and bobs, odds and sods thurs/Fri!..But Jimbo.. You'll have to get someone else to spoon you sat night I'm afraid! :)

Phil,

I have got a bag of army surplus that i could do with bringing along to sell / trade. Its mainly shirts, a jacket or two and a few other odds and sods.

I was thinking about bringing a large camp table to put it on and was wondering as I have two of these whether it is worth bringing both as they might be useful in the communial area if anyone else has stuff they want to lay out to sell / trade?

If you want me to bring both along send me a PM and I'll pack them for the trip.

Not long now lads.

I could list all the gear I am bringing but it might be easier to to bring it along and offer it on a first come first serve basis if anyone is interested.

Hope this is ok?

Not an inconvenience at all old boy. At the end of the day you're helping to both extend folks chances to get to a Meet and also widening the choice of different grounds goodjob . It's also appreciated that folk mention that they either can't make it or, as in your case, that the situation has changed goodjob .

... will this pos free up a position for a weekender spot only person?? ...

Using K.I.S.S, the list will stay at 50 (plus extras).
When all is said and done, it's likely that we'll get between 66 and 75% of those on the list attending - but I'm not in a position to up the numbers so that we get 50 attending (if that makes sense ). TBH, I don't want to go down the route of splitting down the available spaces for each night.

It's probably better to mention the type of thing(s) rather than do a full list :D. That way the thread doesn't end up as a stream of names and trade/sale lists.

is there any space left?

I woudl love to come (It would be my first bushcraft event) as i want to go to the show at the NEC but cant really afford to stay anywhere commercial being a full time student (scout campsite is totally fine for me... im a leader myself). whatever i would have to travel by train both ways so i wouldent be taking up much space in my tiny tent...

if you could let me know if there is sitill space as i dont want to order any NEC tickets unless i know ive somwhere to stay
