Howdy folks!
Since I got my hat yesterday, I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips about caring for it. I'm not sure how it's treated, but it's water resistant and I'd like to help that along - plus, I just want to make sure it doesn't get dried out and cracked.

Any suggestions about what could keep it supple and help keep out the Scottish downpour?

Cheers folks!
Pete

I'd use dubbing like for leather walking boots, that will do it. Cheap too.

Which one did you eventually purchase?

What's dubbing? I've never heard of it...

Smoggy - I might give that a try... I wound up getting the Kakadu Packer hat in black. I was going to get the Down Under, but I like to pay with paypal for security and ease, and the Packer was all I found in my size :p

Cheers,
Pete

Mine gets a dollop of whatever comes to hand when I get the urge to do it.
Dubbin, Neatsfoot oil, Nikwax even my homebrewed Beeswax/parafin wax mix.

Yeah just the same, it waterproofs and will stop the leather drying and cracking in got weather.

I too use whatever , but often it is petrolium jelly ( vasaline ) just a little soaks in and does the job and is very cheap

to be honest all you are attempting to do is protect the leather and maintain it's suppleness, so you only need to work it in.....buffing and polishing are ok if you wish to expend the energy....

Smoggy - well, I'd be lying if I said it was shiny now... :p

Steve48 - Out of curiosity, does it not leave a bit of a greasy finish?

Andywinkk - if only I had a car :p

Not greasy as such as it soaks in , I find it is very easy to do and helps keep it souple and waterproof no polishing etc
