View Full Version : Bushtool (not a woody clone) my take on an old design
This is my new bushy prototype (not s manufacturing prototype but personal use proto)
It incorporates things i dont like about woody type clones.
I dont like the blades being too wide as it limits what you can do
not too thick 3mm is more than plenty
Partial tang for lightness but still sturdy
Higher grind with secondary bevel for stronger edge (i carry a carving knife for carving)
This i feel is nearly there, could have made it lighter without the thick butt plate (still lighter than a woodlore)
The tang is thick and scored for strength even though it only goes to thirds through the handle and the but plate is held on by screws that take up the final third (with the head ground until the screw slot dissapears)
Steel = cpm 3v
blade tickness = 3mm
blade length = 103mm
blade width = 20mm tapering to point
overall length = 215mm
handle = my elm that i had stabilized professionally
Grind lines could have been better:C
As a side note the cpm 3v despite not being stainless took a week in vinegar to patina:O

Very nice indeed Shinken.... even the little wifey commented she liked it, especially the handle so that's high praise indeed :D
Yknow as I was reading I thought "Hey, that's about exactly how I like my general purpose knives."
Then, as I looked at the picture, I thought, "Hey, that's about exactly how I like my general purpose knives"
In short - awesome :D

Nice job shinken. i like the idea with the vinegar to put patina on blade i was thinking of the same sort of think but with etching acid or battery acid with a similar type scandinavian blade if it don't work ill have a go at your idea

That looks really great! Functional too!!
Thanks chaps i may make a few more in 01 steel
Oh and dont put 01 in white vinegar for two weeks or etching fluid there may be nothing left. Although without oxygen it may be okay?

Now that loks like a knife I would want to own!
That's uncanny, I have been thinking up a design for a new neck knife for a couple days now Its is almost identical to that, although shorter blade and the handle is more rounded.
It is a wonderful knife you have made there, a timeless classic.
Mmmmmmmmmmm very nice- you ever think of selling knives like that I reckon you could be a busy feller.............

I thought some might like a quick third party review of this "quest" of Shinken's. The first prototype dropped through my letter box yesterday.
Frankly his pictures do not do the knife justice

Actually - nor do mine :o
The wood is just.....timber porn :D

Just gorgeous!
The handle is fantastically shaped - it sort of begs being slapped in the hand with a surgeons "thwack"
I love the brass buttcap and ferrule - very solid and heavy and add a real feeling of control to the balance of the knife
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3537/3421430303_f218db5d90_o.jpg
The sheath is great - true scandy style with a liner and a reasuring solid click & grip when the knife is pushed home. You know its "not going anywhere"

In use? Solid, accurate, very, very precise. Everything a puukko should be in my mind.
I know Ash is still experimenting with this design...but this knife has nothing, but nothing worng with it. A "super steel" blade, a stabalised handle, solid brass fittings. Just stunning.
Would I change anything? Well, for me a tan coloured sheath...but that's cosmetics. What would I change about the knife? Not a single thing!
If these make it to "production"....buy one.

That is knife porn.
Crikey, this threads bad for the heart - lol.
