View Full Version : Regular Devon( south west ? ) get together??
Just trying to gauge interest , would any mid-devon bushcrafters be interested in a regular get together? Say once a month?
My idea at the moment is to base it at a scouting ground located within Ashclyst Forest which is just outside of Exeter which should allow good commuting routes from most of the South West.
Also camping facilities are on site and it would has a good site for undercover instructional area if required.
At the moment just trying to see who may be interested in trying to get it off the forum and onto the ground as a regular ‘thing’ after that I would like to envisage we could attempt to arrange some ‘show & tell ‘ days with instruction from within the group or outside the group. Ie mushroom ID , Animal tracking , field archery etc .
Anyone seriously interested enough to talk this through over a few beers??
We'd be up for something like this in principal. What sort of camping? Would it be tents? Hammocks and Tarps? Bivvie bags?
Would you envisage weekends or weekdays? Loads of questions but would be interested in doing something every 2 to 3 months.
Martin
Camp wise , whatever you want ( i think?..) can't see any reason for any particular type of camping.
Just thought it would be a good way to reguarly meet up ,swapsy books, check out each others gears and kit , exchange rude and tall stories and oh yes,.. learn some bushcraftty type stuff , who knows may even lead onto a regular LARGE event .
No set requirement to turn up , But i know due to other commitments that once its gets up and running it will have to exist as regular member involvement as i will not be able to always attend ( Night Shift and other commitments ) so will require everyone to pitch in and set up some sort of program of events if thats whats wanted , if not just bring your sleeping bag and rum....
I just looked up Ashclyst Forest on Google maps and it looks fantastic. Can't wait for more details. We'll see how this develops.
Martin
Just a few thoughts , If the meet was every 2-3 months then i guess it would have to be justified for a whole weekend, if it was every month I would imagine a Fri get together around a fire until everyone is there and it allows some time for people to commute up and turn up whenever with then a earlish start for the saturday ending in a bomburst for home around the 3-4-5 O'clock mark so that people can spend half the week end with the family??
Sound O.K?
What would people prefer.
a) More regular monthly meets of a one day duration
b) Quarterly meets over a long weekend.
Just to add, if any one else is searching for gen.int on where i am on about, the following is pulled off the scouts website and Google maps seems to recognize Caddihoe as a location.
Caddihoe Scout Centre
This is a campsite of around nine acres split between five fields situated in Ashclyst Forest on the outskirts of Exeter and is available all year round. The maximum number of campers is 200 and is, therefore, not really suitable for large County camps or backwoods camps.
If you are seeking indoor accommodation there is a small cottage which can sleep 20 and is available all year. Beds and cooking utensils are not provided. The kitchen has a six-burner cooker, a refrigerator and a water heater. The cottage is not centrally heated. There are two indoor toilets and two washing areas.
A deposit is required whether you are using the cottage or the fields for camping.
There are two small toilet cubicles in the cottage and there is also a toilet block on site.

Good location. Ashclyst is an old and great wood with plenty of varied woodland habitats and types of tree. Its a central location. Time permitting, I'd be up for it.
Oh...does it allow campfires?

Sorry , Not sure if you are waiting on me for a response or not? ( i am only putting the idea forward , so please run with it )
Meet up for a drink - Yes
When - For me difficult - work a rotating night shift and some days off are busier then others , if you can all agree a date time and venue i will do my best to advise you or attempt to make time to attend.
That all being said if you can , and are happy yo get this off the ground by yourself please do - All i want to see is a regular local meet - don't care who organizes it but i would suggest Exeter is a local and logical choice Unles mr Budds Forest is sufficiently Large??

Anymore interest in this? So far just Four willing to meet upfor a pint?
I am trying to gauge if there is sufficient interest and motivation to take this further so can people chip in if Its currnently just the Initial meet up date that deters you??
If you can respond and give me some insight into if a regular camp did get off the ground , when and how often would be best? Ie Bi-monthly Fri meetup-Saturday Endex? etc
We could get up from Cornwall say once every two to three months. It would almost certainly have to be a Saturday to Sunday meet for us due to work and family commitments.

Few more details, as have spoken to the guy in charge of the site.
Price for camping is £2.60 PPPN so not sure how that stacks up against other places.
More information about the site can be found ;-
http://www.devonscouts.org.uk/images/activities/caddihoebrochure.pdf
The gentlemen did make mention that it get busy more at weekends then during the week , which is fairly obvious however the one fly in the ointment may be that although they are happy yo have the site shared by say a scout group and a bunch of bushcrafter if the scout leaders object because the bushcrafter have no CRB checks then they will not be able to share the site.
Obviously the warden rings around fisrt to see if the scout/guide leader has any problems with sharing and then gets back to the contact person.
Just out of interest and attempting to consider be a little proactive a CRB costs £31.00 for the standard or £36.00 for the In depth search. I think it would obvioulsy reassure people if you could prove you have chosen to proved a CRB.
Unfortunately a sign of the times we live in folks and i would'nt blame any scout/guide leader who objected to sharing the site in these to better err on the side of caution.

I can understand the reasoning behind your suggestion, but TBH if it came to that you could count me out on principle.
Not that I have anything to hide ,just that to me its no ones business.
The day I have to provide a CRB to go camping will be the day I jack it all in.

:togo: well said gunslinger.:togo:
Gunslinger , I do understand the sentiment and understand your stance on it.
It was , and still is just a suggestion that I hope will never have to be exercised or displayed, but to be honest the way in which our society is going ( read that, as you will ) , the possibilty of ID cards and so on, the very ligatious ( spelling ?? ) system we seem to be moving down , I can only see , in the future any event or pursuit that MAY involve contact with children requiring a rigorous CRB.
I think the upside of having it would be very useful for bushcrafters and would open up the possibilty of using the same land ,areas and function areas as the Scouts and Guides and other various youth organizations.
I totally agree with what you are saying and to be honest everyone seems now to be considered potentially guilty rather then potentially innocent.
Sad world we live in... Still that is a discussion over a pint.
So I respect to your standpoint and honesty but at this stage my suggestion is just my possible suggestion , No one is asking US to provide it.
Lets all go and Terraform Mars!!

On the note of CRB Enhanced. I have one so camping at a scout site should not be a problem. And to be honest with you - and as a father of two - if I was letting my son go camping without me on a scout site and there were adults camping inthe same place who could be anyone - I would sleep easier if they were CRB'd. Don't want to start and argument but that's just my preference. It only takes one to spoil it for everyone and ruin a life.

4) stay out Sunday night too, perhaps elsewhere nearby on the moor.
Number 4 would be ideal but if I can't spare two nights out that week, I wonder if anyone could spare me a lift back?
I wonder if we should organise some food between us guests -- say one person brings some bacon and eggs for brekky, another some potatoes, another some onions and carrots, another a couple bunnies...
Dont worry Matt, I have a car.
Yeah me to mate, we'll not leave u stranded, we should double up as much as poss so we take up as little parking as we can!?

good plan :)
Do the bunnies come with short skirts and a maid's outfit? :D if so then bring lots :35: :35:
Craven is on to something too. IF people can carshare it will make parking easier ;)
i'm happy to bring one or two as long as i don't have to drive 50 miles to pick up, :lurk: i'll be coming from tiverton way if thats any help to anyone! :D
as for food what do we all like? we could try some experimental stuff?? anyone ever cooked in a ground oven?
what do we all think?

Nah mate they come completely naked!
Is there anything that anyone won't/can't/would prefer not to eat? Meat, fish, eggs, wheat, etc. Also how many will be wanting an evening meal and how many brekky?
It'd be great if I could get a lift off someone, at least one way. I work on Saturdays so if anyone's able to give me a lift it'd have to be 1700 at the earliest (I can take my kit in with me in the morning if needed). It's across the road from Endicott's. There's plenty of buses though so if it's not convenient it's not a problem. A lift back Sunday would be great if I can't spend more than one night out or the weather's terrible. Else I'll take the opportunity to have a wander and make another day or two of it.
i'll eat anything!
except soya fake food! blaahhh!!
mmmm bunnies:p
Me too!
my weekends off run from fri afternoon till monday morning so we would have to work our way round that

In terms of cooking kit on site, I have:
-pit oven with granite chunks for cooking (the only other rocks on site explode)
-couple of large pans that can go on fire (also a single frying pan)
-plenty of kettles
-a trivet over a fireplace
-small tripod for hangin stuff over fire
- some BBQ kebab skewers
-table for food prep
I might also get around to making an adjustable spit (as in spit roast) by then. I'm hoping to have one to display at a show the weekend before, but I want to make a scolds bridle for the show first ;)

Food wise I eat anything ,so just let me know what to bring.
Will probably bring a tarp which TBH I have never used before so any advice welcomed.
GS
GS what kit have you got i.e. tarp size, sleeping bag, bivvy bag etc??
i generally use a 3x2m tarp with a hammock, swollow 300 sleeping bag, closed cell foam sleeping mat for insulation and a bivvy bag, keeps me comfy and toasty, more importantly, dry!! i have used it without the bivvy bag but there can sometimes be dampness issues:eek: not fun! but, and i stress but not always.

It wasn't me that mentioned it Dave, but for the record the only dodgy shop I have been told about,is apparently masquerading as a foam shop on the corner by Endys.
After the stories I have heard about sheep and foam mattress's I think its best avoided :D :D

I was planning on this being a saturday evening through to sunday evening thing.
I'm away on friday so I won't be around for campers friday night.
I think this time around keep small (ish). The original plan was to get together around a campfire saturday evening rather than a pub. Then we can generally prat about sunday and disband during sunday at will.
Chris, there is rain water on site, but no 'clean' drinking water. So unless you are happy drinking what comes off my workshop roof (I do), then you will have to bring it with you I'm afraid. The nessy handles are ironwood and cherry. I only got around to making them because Wayne Goddard asked if I had a picture of one for Blade magazine ;)
There is plenty of firewood but it will need gathering :D

01-05-2009, 09:55
to be honest Chris I've not really played with them yet. Certainly I don't prefer making them as these are based on the original lines, so they are thin blades and about 6" in length. that means more likely to warp in heat treat. I can certainly see the merits of the blade but I don't know about the swell towards the tip. I need to try them out really
either mate, you know me, I'm easy :D
Hi all. Would someone be so kind as to pm me with some clear directions, ill be coming up on my moped (hehe!) from barnstaple way, the clearer the directions the better as i will have to stop and deglove etc if i want to look at a map! :) Also, if anyone is happy to pm me their mobile number incase i do get lost somewhere so i can call and work it out, that would be much appreciated! I think the original plan (therefore the one I'm working to) was to get together saturday evening around the campfire and have fun. Then sunday we can do whatever we do, having fun and maybe learning neww things before wending our merry way home before nightfall.
I want to keep this one small and informal partly because this was pretty much my only weekend free this side of october and so I have a lot on my plate right now. I'm basically taking the place of the pub from last time :beerchug: We can always grow in the future ;)
So. shall we try to meet at about 5pm in the parking location? If we go in a group then there will be fewer complaints from Grumpy, but if others are coming and going later then that's fine too.
Saturday:
Arrive from 5pm
set up camp if staying
get beer/food on the go
night falls and we see what happens :grouphug:
Sunday:
get up and have breakfast
amuse ourselves throughout the day (any suggestions are welcome :) )
decamp and disband before nightfall (9pm)
If anybody is planning on coming down on sunday or just for a bit on saturday then that's cool, just let me know when you arrive at the parking spot ;)
Dogs.
I would love to say to bring them, but there is a slight bollox issue. Saxen (my dog) still has his and though he is an absolute poof and wouldn't hurt anyone/anything, other dogs often take umbridge to him because of them :( So following a recent visit from a staffy bitch who made him very uncomfortable in what is in essence his back garden, I have to say: No dogs. I know dogs who are great with other dogs and people the rest of the time, but I'm not willing to take the risk again. The only exception would be in the case of dogs who have already met Saxen and are known to get along with him. Sorry :cop:
I'm going to be computer-contactable right through (ish) until saturday morning, after that it's over to the telephone. I'll be in the woods from saturday morning trying to things organised and catch up on work (yeah, right  )
lookin forward to seeing you all :)
Just for the record , I won't be able to stay over night as am due to be on shift for that week end period. I did'nt mention anything previoulsy as i thought it was important to get as many peoples names down as 'going' as to encourage others to attend , thus swelling our little population.
I do intend to pop down on Sunday just to meet and greet as many peeps as poss so i can put names to avatars(?) , so i will be bimbling down on the sunday , as as i work Nights i may well have to borrow someones hammock for a few hours to bang out some Zeds if anyone is generous enough.
Anyway , this will be a regular thing now, I can feel it. So if we don't all meet this time we can catch up later.
So see you all on Sunday.
hey guy's,
did we decide on food? are we sorting ourselves or going for a group feast?? basically do i have to drag loads of cooking kit and stuff or shall i just buy a bag of spuds and some vegg to throw in the pot?? input please!:grouphug:
Dave's got plenty of pans, kettles etc. on site apparently as well as a ground oven. I'd like us to do a communal meal if possible. If we are, it's probably best we coordinate; spuds are great but not so go if everyone brings them... ;) I've got some homebrew bitter handy but it's not yet clarified...
BTW I won't be around til about 1800, since I have to work til 1700 then probably get the bus to Cheriton.
i think it would be great if we could all eat communally, i guess we could all get there and then decide exactly what to eat, then a couple go off foraging at a local store? i dunno the area or how practical it is, or we can decide what we all like and just bring bits each? what does everyone else think?

I reckon bring random food stuffs and cook whatever arrives :D
The village shop is open 'til 9pm and is a mile up the road if extra supplies are needed. ;)
I've got a pit oven, trivet, a couple of large pots and a few smaller ones, several kettles and of course and lots of firewood! toasting forks, bbq skewers, lots of green wood, etc. Just make sure you bring your own eating and drinking vessels.
Oh and a couple of notes from my party. Saxen says that he is hungry and likes rabbit (bloody dog  ) and Charlotte (swmbo) says that if she sees anybody being silly with a knife or an axe she will shout at them ;) Not sure what she has come to expect from bushcrafters :yikes:
I'll bring the ingredients for poundcake and some extra eggs for the morning. That way if we eat communally I can make cake, and if we don't I can make damper or bannock and eggs :D
did anyone hear from harryhawk? we was going after some wabbit! :AR15firin
i'll get some veg n spuds for a stew kinda thing (hopefully wabit) if not i'm sure we can nip to the shop! this should b fun!
I'm hoping to get there for the 5pm meetup, but there is a slight chance (due to being a bit rubbish and having to ride a moped there!) that I may be a bit later. Fingers crossed! Due to lack of carrying space, I will not be able to contribute much to communal food, for this reason I was thinking I'd bring enough for me and cook it, thence not taking the **** out of all the people who are gonna bring decent food for communal usage! I can't blimmin' wait people :D

see you all later on :) I'll come and meet people at 5pm, but we can hang around like a bunch of aging youths for a bit :D
oi, who you calling aging!:(
i'll have you know i'm in my prime!!
anywhoo, up to the individual in food respect, anyone who'd like to join in is welcome, any one that would like to do there own thing is fine to!
really looking farward to this guy's (and gals) should be fun!
Hmmm, .....
Gathering of random people from differing backgrounds coming together to live in a cramped communal area ( sharing food . and God knows what else!!) for a limited period of times and then returning to a wider spread of communities???
Sounds like a possible Swine-Flu Distruibution point!!!
Better bring the face masks and the disinfectant.
better still, why not quarantine the entire area! we can make a couple of months at least!!!:D

Maybe get a bit of an animal in before hand and have it in the pit oven ready and waiting? :dunno: Any other suggestions are very welcome of course
Something that I found (as did Charlotte) very amusing was that after the first 20 minutes of bushcraft kit talk, the conversation took a definite turn in an unexpected direction! :theyareon So maybe I need to get a dungeon built for next time :lmao:

when we had our first British Blades get together a few years back there was an entertaining conversation had between a British maker who liked big ugly bowies and a Scandinavian maker, who liked small blades. The Brit asked the Scandi why they always make such small knives. His reply was simply "because I don't need the extension".
And that is why I make miniatures :naughty:

I hope you lot aint knocking my Nessy!! Especially you Dave, you made it!!
Anyhow I love it,I know a bit about what works for me as a blade and my Greenman takes care of all my bushcraft needs but that Nessy just felt SO nice in the hand! And a real beauty! I am picking it up at the knife show this Sunday,so anyone coming can have a fondle! (and you can see what the knife feels like aswell if you like!)

I won't be at work on Monday but if you want to do so just drop it off and I'll pick it up before closing. No pressure, just offering.

When we all meeting up again then!?
C da C
I think that its important to bear in mind that Dave Woods is also the location for his business , so obviously his work will come 1st as he needs the site for his students., What would be great is if we can also find somewhere else to have a meet up , this should mean we can have a few more regular meet ups.
So anyone know anyone else with some land or how we can get permission to gain Bushcrafty access to it???
i have a friend who has some woodland on there farm, i'm in talks at the moment about using it, they are fine with me using it alone! i have to go and check it out to see what kind of wood it is, size etc. i'll keep you all posted!:D
Craven, (or anyone else.. ) any joy in securing some land? Just thinking summer is ticking by , would be nice to sort out another meet up.
Unless we just book somewhere more' commercial'?
Ideas?

I'm probably out (likewise my place) until the autumn due oto me doing a headless chicken impression for the next few months
but later int the year if people don't mind it a bit chilly...
Dave , once again, very kind of you, if we could make an Autumn date could we sort out a little bit of a working party for some jobs you need done? I think most people going would be happy to repay the favour.
Is Chris's place "with Ashley only" or shall I give him a ring?
I can come in the autumn.
I know a farm that takes camping, also fires, if I asked nicely perhaps they would do a group discount.
hey guys, checked out a friends wood at the e/end, not very big tho, I had a good scout around and potential campsites were limited due to it being on the side of a hill, not sure it would be suitable for a meet? Also parking maybe an issue! However he does have another wood and I'm going to check that one out as soon as I can! I'll keep u updated!:D

Hi Guys
I have a couple of woods that may be sutiable. Well they are not mine but they are woods i use, Privately owned by the village i live in and the villagers are welcome to use them. We are alsways up there with the Scouts making shelters and cooking.
Neither woods are huge, one has little parking and the other is probably ok on parking. All water would have to be bought with you as they are just wood.
They are in South Somerset though..... Dunno if you Devon lot are prepared to venture up north?
J
where abouts are we talking jay?

Near Yeovil So bout 30 mins drive into Somerset from Devon.#

TeeDee I'm bout 45 - 60 mins from Exeter if that helps.
Jaysurfer - Think everyone will be willing to travel a little bit, and sure amongst ourselves we can organzie some lift share.
Do you need to check with anyone if its OK for a bit of a meet up?
Don't know how many people will come out for this one so it may just be a sedate affair to meet up for a beer and chin-wag.
Jaysurfer

No i don't need to check with anyone. Both woodlands are communal areas for the people of the local shire's. I approached the copse committee previously with intentions to do the same with Scouts and they said i was welcome to do that sort of thing, Overnight camp and cook anytime i wanted and the woods were there to be used!
Anyone is more than welcome to come up at some point n see what they think / have a walk round and the woods. The good bit is that if there is alot of people then the two woods are only bout a mile apart so could always split into two but would be better to keep together.
As i said before neither woods have toilet or water access, the woods are used by other people so may see people around but during the day i would ask that any wood is retrieved from the floor - i don't really want people asking me why I was up there with people chopping down trees when all we were doing was sawing off a branch lol The trouble with village gossip unfortunately.
Jay , This sounds ideal
Why don't you pick a date that suits you and then we can post up.
Even if it turns out to be a smaller gathering it will good to get out.
Water wise, we'll have to see how many are going and then sort out some logistics for bringing water onto site.
What village are the woods near? want to have peek on google map.
well up for a meet as soon as!! got some kit to test that i have made and i'd like to get out as much as i can in the summer!
give us a location and date then jay and we'l see who's up for it!!:D

Well I can do any weekend really guys....
I've just got back from Glastonbury (got work in the morning!!!!) How about we say one wknd out of the next two.
You lot can decide - My house is only a mile from the woods so water isn't a problem as long as people have things to put the water in lol
I have a collection of knives, saw's and axes that people are welcome to try out / practice with.
Anyone fancy doing a group meal for the sat night??
Considering i live a mile away i can pretty much provide whatever we need.
The woods are in between Sparkford and Queen Camel and the 2nd location is right next to the A303 above Queen Camel.
Not very bushcrafty i know but thee is also a Mc Donalds (not for me) but just in case any novices wanna join us but don't wanna cook at camp lol
Lookin forward to it already... let me kno when is good for you lot

So people can get a rough idea here is a google map
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Sparkford&sll=50.999065,-2.479477&sspn=0.251066,0.586395&ie=UTF8&ll=51.027495,-2.574878&spn=0.015682,0.03665&t=h&z=15
The woods are the two wooded areas in the centre of the map there is literally only a field in between them.... I'll find out if there is footpath between the two.

Thought i'd start a list of people interested in coming to our (primative and novice) get together.... Thought if i started it here and got people who have been pro-active in this discussion first refusal and then we can start a new post just for this meet and open the invite out to others.
Date is still to be confirmed - I get the impression we'd all like to do it in the next couple of weeks tho?
So we have....
Jay (surfer)
Craven
Tee Dee
I have a tracking course booked in for the 17th -19th July , just to give you the heads up, I obviously won't be able to make that particular weekend..
Thanks for sorting this out Jaysurfer.

29-06-2009, 17:38
Thats fine Tee Dee.
How about this coming wknd 4+5th
or the wknd after 11th + 12th ????
The sooner we get out the better and then we can organise another one before our summer vanishes all together lol
Oh has anyone got any home made brew? I have some home made wine - it's always good round the fire.....
Just speaking for myself here , so if you need to organzie something go ahead.
I'm in the middle of my shift cycle which means the 1st available fri/sat period for me is the 24th/25th July ( GLUM )
If enough can make it before that , do it , if i don't make this one i 'll make the next.

Hi Steve
Next wknd we can meet from 6pm on the 10th and stay through to the Sunday. and the same goes for the weekend of the 24th - 26th.
Depending how many ppl come but i think next wekend will just be a chill out in the hammocks wknd do some bushcraft stuff and enjoy.
I might not be able to make it after all. It seems living in Devon means one's friends invite themselves for holidays.

02-07-2009, 15:58
Hi Steve
Is that for the 10th or the 24th?
No worries mate, anyone else is still welcome to come either wknd.... I might just go and sit in the woods on me ownsome for the weekend anyway.

Sounds like we are gonna have a few ppl so all should be good.
I went on a reccy of one of the woods today and all was fine - depending on numbers and who has what set up will depend on where we can set up camp.
