im wanting to weave/ construct a basket - there is probably a correct term for the type- but the type that comes with a handle bit like a shopping basket only shallower

never tried any sort of weaving etc ( im a mechanic, i do oily) but im entirely jealous of all the great craftsmanship i see here and figured what the hell
i figured i have time to make mistakes between now and spring when i intend to use for forraging ( yes im going the whole hog)

this years resolution - start making / stop buying

anyone offer hints tips or resources help me out please
answers on a postcard.....

thanks

Try Jon's bushcraft (http://www.bushcraft.ridgeonnet.com/) site, I am sure he has done some good work on baskets.

There's the tutorial (http://www.bushcraft.ridgeonnet.com/basicbasket.htm).

never dared look at Jons tutorials other than in awe after a few beers - he puts the current playstation generation to shame

If it's this kind of basket you're looking at...

it's called a 'trug'. You can make them out of split oak, ash or any hardwood that cleaves down easily, or you can weave one from willow or dogwood easily enough.

I've made one from strips of plastic carrier bag, cut in the round (go round and round with a pair of scissors until you reach the bottom of the bag) then twisted like making cordage. You weave with that instead of willow wands. It's a fine way to re-cycle.
