My "TSA certified" (knife had been confiscated once) Huntsman is now looking pretty good. I finally got around to ordering the "Plus" scales and installed them the other day. I now have a pen and a stainless steel pin. I got them in black, because... I am a slick, low-drag operator, and black just fits with the kind of dangerous person I am. The old scales had someone else's initials on them and last year they got a good soaking in DEET and melted. The knife looks brand new now.

I made a short video of the process, it is very easy. This is a great way to upgrade/restore an old knife.

"...had the arrogance to put his own initials on there rather than mine" :lmao:

I didn't know this was possible - can the old scales be put back on as well or does taking them off damage them in any way?

Cheers!

One of the pins did strip off a little ring of plastic from one of the holes. I'm sure they could be put back on with a dab of glue but all the reasons for getting rid of them would go along for the ride.

My son has latched onto them for some reason and carries them around in his jacket pocket with his other "survival" stuff. I have to constantly check the contents of the special zippered pocket in his jacket to make sure he's OK to go to school. Mac

I knew that people re-handled their SAKs but I had no idea it was quite so straight forward to replace the plastic ones, and an upgrade as well  . Thanks.

Pete.

I also did not know how easy this could be done!

Thanks for the demo.

Best regards,

I like the idea of plus scales and it looks easier that I thought.

This is where I ordered mine from. My profile still reads Brazil, I'm in the US now for a while. I don't know about the free shipping to the UK. They do have a $20 minimum.

The $20:00 minimum, plus postage to the UK, at the current exchange rate may make buying a brand new Huntsman for £19:99 (delivered) a better deal.

An even better deal is the offer of a Huntsman, and a Maglite AA, batteries, holster (for the Maglite) delivered for £24:99.

I just bought the above combo to add to my medical kit and the service was good, even including a 10% off next order voucher, which I'll put to use for the Leatherman Crunch.

The prices on the Swiss Army Knives, Leatherman, Victorinox and Gerber multi-tools are excellent and the service proved good, so I thought I'd share the info, as a happy customer. (o:

I've adapted my SAK Rucksack so its legal. It is quite crude though, I basically busted the lock off of it by hammering with a screw driver on it until it fell off. Then ground down the blade until it was under 3 inches, had to re-add the bevel at the tip but it's still surprisingly sharp.

Grab one and make the scales your self its easy enough ;) Tools would be some epoxy, little copin saw, epoxy and sand paper. I have made scales from ebony, oak, coolibah and they turn out really nice. There are probably loads of pictures on this site of modded SAK`s :) I will post some if u cant find any .

I have a small SAK with no scales that I use in the pouch of my BK-7 knife (the other knife in the video). I didn't buy new scales for it because I like the way it fits in the pouch but I do want to put a very low profile set of scales on it as it is uncomfortable to use. I'm thinking something like very thin micarta or G-10. Mac

I put very thin oak scales on this matching SAK a long time ago and they are still fine acording to my Dad. A few of my mates have them in all sorts and they stand up pretty well.

That looks great, very well done. I have an idea for my BK-7. I want to make micarta out of an old pair of camo BDU's and shape that into a pair of handle scales. I would them make them into a matched pair for the big knife and the little SAK that rides in the pouch.

Don't ever drop that knife in the forest. I'll have the same problem with mine once I make camo micarta. Mac

I have never tried making or using micarta, let us know how you get on..
Tutorial maybe ;) ;)

The micarta info is out there on the net...

http://www.aescustomknives.com/docs/tutorial5.htm

There are many discussions about how to make it on different forums. It's basically impregnating the cloth pile one layer at a time with wet resin and then putting it in a press (wrapped in plastic wrap!) to let it set under compression. You really don't want to glue the press together with a micarta slab.

The way I see it I wore out those camo BDU's in the bush and it would be cool to preserve all those good memories and indispensable mojo into a set of matched handle scales. Mac
