View Full Version : Cumbria Overnighter
Nicking someone (on here) else's New Year resolution, I want to try a sleep outside at least one night every month this year.
Since Middlewood is out for me due to work :( are there any Cumbrian's who fancy meeting up for an overnighter one Friday or Saturday? I haven't really got anywhere in mind (need to check if I still have access to the site I was going to use), so I'm open as to location.
I`ll be up for some of that schwuk but not for a month or so, I`ve got a few trips planned already so I need to rack up some more brownie points with SWMBO first.

Well I'm planning at least one a month, so we should be able to meet up at some point. :) ...and I know where you're coming from with the brownie points!

Yep, I would be interested.
Not too far up the road from me, just let me know when and where and I will try and get the time off.
I will have some of this,
A couple of the locals up at Middlewood were telling me about a bushcrafty place in the lakes I will PM details.

And me. (D'oh...damn character count!)
I'd be well up for this, again dates and exact location permitting:)
I now have a promising lead on a site for this, and I'm trying to sort out some dates. I suspect it will end up being one of the weekends (excluding the first or last) in March now.
I could be up for this if there's room for another.

I'm definately up for this one, if newbies are allowed :-)
i could be up for this dates pending,
Looks like this is a go. :)
Here's the site:
http://www.greattower.org.uk/250 acres, so plenty of room to bimble/explore.
We can have our pick of weekends in March (barring the first or the last, basically because I'm busy :)). There's no open fires - we have to use their altar fires (it's a Scout site in case you didn't look), and they're OK with natural shelters - as long as they're destroyed before we leave - and tarps/tents, but not hammocks . I've got to admit, that's a new one on me - it's normally natural shelters we have to beg permission for...
So, out of the following dates, which would be the preference:
6-8th March
13-15th March
20th-22nd MarchIt would be a (late-afternoon) Friday to Sunday job.

Wha??? No hammocks? Excluding the "because it's their site and they can" explanation, is there any feeling as to why this is the case? Like many, I use treehuggers and you would have to look hard to see I'd even been there. Could it be that they have a preconceived idea about hammock damage that could be dispelled with some education?
13-15th would be first choice for me, followed by 20-22nd. Can't make 6-8th at all.
I know GT well - a great site.

I've queried this...

I've queried this...
Will they not budge on this. We use hammocks at Middlewood and also at Delamere and they were both Scout sites.
we have to use their altar fires
Lavvu stoves out too?
Keen to come along, but can only do 13-15 th

I'd be up for it too. Nice site up there, i did some tree work there a few years ago and its acres of mainly young oak. Big area and a short walk to the lake.
I can make most of those dates.

Time to give the pyramid tarp another test run.
Somehow, that photo does not have the same ambiance as the one of Andywinks tipi Wayland.
Is there any gear in the tent? or was it just a photo opportunity?
Looks a good spot for camping out though.
I know what it is now, its just struck me:)
The skys not there.
Yep, there was gear in there but not much. Just my light weight stuff.
It's just above Botallack Head and has a great view out to sea.

I lit a couple of spare candles for the light but as you say the sky was not as good though.
ooh yes thats a very nice spot. I would love to stand there in the teeth of a gale.
Right, back from my trip to Germany, and the booking forms were waiting for me.
Hammocks are a definite no-no for "environmental, health and safety reasons". We may disagree, but it's their site - their rules. Just means I've got chance to test out my Argos tipi (or buy a pyramid tarp if I can find one).
13-15th looks the most likely date, and price seems to be £4.75 per person, per night.
Can I get a firm idea of numbers so I can send the booking forms back?

Hi folks
Is anyone allowed to come along to these meets, I dont have a much in the way of bushcraft gear just my normal backpacking kit small tent etc. It sounds like a great spot
and to be honest I just want to get out and have a go. My 10 year old son (cub) might want to come along would this be ok. oh and would a well behaved border collie be allowed no worries if not.
And all the dates are do-able.
Cheers for now!
Andy
It has gone very quiet.............. is this still on, as I am keen to go ? If not, anyone fancy meeting up anywhere else- looks from other posts on here that Grizedale is out.

This seems to be common problem with camp sites now due to insurance issues.
My guess is that it won't get better. :(

Yes it is the same at Grisedale Forest too. But why?? You can trip over tent guyropes just as easily, In fact a lot of tents have more guy lines:confused:
Some idiot could fall out of a hammock, the tree could fall on them or they could damage the tree and cause it to fall on someone else.
That is how an insurance rep would look at it.

Can no one revive Forest Camp in Delamere. We had no problems there. Come back Goose.
I'm pulling the plug on this one as a) they said no to hammocks, b) there's not that many interested (possibly because of (a)), and c) it's not really cost effective for such a small group.
I've got a lead on another, privately owned, site that should be more ... accommodating.

Im sorry to hear that, but that is what I thought about Grisedale forest Campsite.
