Hi all,
How many out there are from Hampshire and have managed to find a wood where they can do some bushcraft? I live in Eastleigh and looking for somewhere I can do some bushcraft, any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers, Mark

I live close to Brighton. Where do you go for this- Devils Dyke? If you're going to the Dyke you may as well go to Ashdown Forest, but it is "stealth" bushcrafting there!

I currently use scout greenfield sites, they rock. Not sure if they would like random people turning up and using the ground. There is three around the gosport area, i can ask if they would be happy to have an "organised" day/night event.... Saying that, there would proberly be a small fee, and wouldnt be allowed to cut much/any green wood... But their is plenty of wood around to burn..

One site has litterally tons of cut oak, we rekon we burnt around £500 worth of oak this weekend... crazy really!

no, not Lyons copse!

Its green field, no loos or running water... lots of trees for hammocks/ tarps, and plenty of wood to burn.....

And its quiet! We would be the sole occupiers!

No touching the living wood im afraid, we would get in much trouble...

Did any more come of this, as I am looking fopr somewhere on the South Coast. I have found a couple of places near brighton that are campsites on farms that allow fires & use of the woods.

Same here, although I have my little bit of heaven to play in (sorry, not allowed guests - technically it's someone's garden, even if there's 10 acres of it). The big problem round Basingstoke neck of the woods is deer stalking - why let bushcrafters in for free when the stalkers will pay good money all year round to use the land? Sadly the two aren't compatible (except on a Saturday night, since they can't shoot on Sunday morning).

Im just waiting to get permission, there is some concern that once this area becomes known to bushcrafters, then it will be used without permission. Although this is a concern, i am still pressing for it to happen.

Its looking as though this will have to be put back to January time though, although a possible event in December.

If you are generally interested in coming to an event in December/January i think it might be best for people to pm me their email address, and i will take it from there.

Sorry for doing this, but im trying to protect the location from random lurkers.

Im not promising anything though, but im working on it.

I might, just might, join you if I may. I will PM closer to the time.

When I was a Scout I lived in Gosport (1st Gosport Troop, I still have the uniform) and I often camped and hiked through where I think you are thinking of. We had great fun, it would be nice to renew the acquaintance.

The catch is that that was 45 years ago and do you know, nothing about living in the field has really changed. I read the same comments and reprise the same arguments here as then, what is the best.......? I need a bigger knife than yours and so on and so on. Nice really to see and hear.

I am just awaiting a split in Bushcraft into modern (Goretex and titanium) and traditional (cotton tents and leather boots with segs) groupings with long, long discussions of which is best and re-enactment groups who live in the field as they did in 1820 or some such.

This looks as though its a "Go" for january.

These plans will only be disclosed to people via email and not put on the forum.

Hi Guys

there may be an opportunity to meet at my site, we run a bushcraft school on the edge of the new forest and there are occasions where we need bodies to make up numbers on some courses, i can offer these for free so you can come along and have the run of the woods (700 acres) anyone who is interest let me know and i will put a list together and let people have dates i could also look at organising a free meet a couple times a year for members in this region it it would appeal. Anyway let me know if this helps. James

Hi James, have emailed you my contact details. Very interested if you have a meet or if you need numbers!

I hadn't spotted sunrise bushcraft, didn't realise it was in the area though I am new to bushcrafting and this site. My old man was a baliff for CAC years ago and used to fish the estate and lakes around you. I even spent a few lovely hours at the cider tent at this years E&R show - from what I can remember!

I grew up 5m the other way from FGYT, out in Bransgore before moving to London 4 years ago.

Hope something gets organised!

Cheers, Matt.

Hi Guys
i will try to organise a get together in May, i know its a few months away but we are pretty booked till then! May i say a big thanks to duncan who came up last saturday and helped to build the new round house, it looks great and will be a real asset to the camp, check out his knives if you get a chance guys. I have a course on 20th March i may need a few bods for if anyone is around let me know in the meantime if we have a weekend gettogether what sort of stuff do you guys want to do, i will need to make a very nominal charge to cover my cost to the estate as i pay on a per head basis but if people want i can get in specialists for a variety of lessons, i was thinking a tracking masterclass and maybe skinning and tanning or bow making. These will include some small contribution but i would try to keep it as low as poss if this is the sort of thing people want? James

Hi James - your suggestion sounds great and I would definitely still be up for coming to visit. Some instruction would be a really good way to spend some time at your place and I would love to do some tracking, although I think a masterclass would be beyond me! Hi all,
I've just joined and am completely new to bushcraft but am really eager to get started and learn!
I live in Southampton so did a quick search to find anybody in the are and came across this thread...

So, where do I start? I don't have any equipment or any experience other than camping on a commercial campsite and scouts (years ago!).

Anyway, thanks for any help!

Hi everyone. i too am new to the site and from Southampton. I am fairly new to bushcraft but i am very keen to gain more experience and hopefully more skills too! Like lots of people, my main problem has been finding people with similar interests and a place to practice bushcraft! I am really keen to meet new people in the area and would be vedry interested in joining a 'meet up' if that was ok with everyone else! Unfortunatly i dont have much to offer in terms of contacts or places to go but would be more than happy to contribute to any costs that might occur!

Thank you, and i look forward to hopefully meeting some of you in the future!

I have no record of all the licencees, but one of them, Tommy Weston who was a licenced slaughterman and used to kill and sell meat at the pub to suppliment his income. Tommy could be seen dressing the joints in the pub, while talking and drinking with the customers, until banned from doing so by the health authorities. In fact one of the doors of the pub had a groove cut in it to hold chicken's legs when they were plucked and drawn and hung.
During Tommy's time, the pub went through a few alterations to bring it in line with new licencing laws, but upon his death, his replacement opened the bathroom door to find it had not been used. In fact the carpenter's wood shavings were still on the floor. Tommy preferred to use his tin bath in the kitchen.

The name "The Hampshire Bowman" ? The Pub has had that name since the early 1970's re-named by the licensee, Stan Montague whose wife had an interest in toxophily (she was in fact an olympic standard archer and founder member of the adjacent archery club).

How can that not be a great pub?

I like the no phone policey, good looking pub/ My current local get full of aircraft techs and bomb heads most nights, it'll be nice to spend an evening in a proper pub.

Hey all,
Was thinking about planning a bit of a social get together over Alton way in November.

Would be on the 20th or 27th.

It will be £10 each to go to the woodland owner.

As mentioned before this isn't a course, and you will be attending at your own risk.

Have to set a limit to 8 people/cars - although can accomodate more if anyone has a 4x4.

Let me know if your interested, and which date would be best.

Hi all,

Sorry, for the lack of replies recently. Yep its still on for 27th.

If anyone else want to come along them please get in touch.

I'll bring along a couple of birds (of the feathered variety) for a stew and other ingredients, if folk would like some would be a small contribution of £3 each max.

If anyone has any projects they want to do/continue please feel free to bring stuff along, or if you want to learn anything. It will be a bit cold to just sit around all weekend. So would be good to have some things planned.
List so far:

Guys, will have to call the limit at that. The main problem is parking but I think a few of us have 4x4 so will be able to park in the woods.

Hello All,
I'm new to this site, but a Hampshire lad nonetheless. I work on a farm, but would like to get more into the bushcraft side of things. If there are any courses or trips opening up in the area, please let me know.
Hope you enjoy your trip at the end of November, the Hampshire Bowman does some excellent in-house ales. If I wasn't gutting a turkey for Thanksgiving that weekend (American missus), I'd ask if I could pop over, as I'm just around the corner.
All the Best,
Anthony.

Hi Aaron, there is a meet this weekend, near Alton in Hampshire very kindly being organised by Andyr. I know the places are limited by the amount of parking so perhapse best to shoot Andy a pm to see what the score is. I'm happy to give anyone a lift if they live between Aldershot and Alton. At present I’m in the process of going for another job/career so I have no idea what I’ll be up to in May so will have to say no sorry. Also would prefer one a bit closer to home for my first meet being totally new to it.

Yeah that's the one. If you change your mind nearer the time then let me know, I'll most likely be driving so can give you a lift. I agree with the closer to home part, there does seem to be a bit of gap in Hampshire for meets. I would be up for organising it but need to sort a location too.
