I have just joined up here. I'm an ex pat Brit living in South Dakota.
After being in the forces and doing too much bush craft I kind of got away from it.
Then I got into period trecking( US Colonial) and revived my passion for the outdoors.
Now my two boys are old enough to come along I have even more interest. But have up graded to more modern kit than my "primitive" for the boys sake.
But that said they don't mind a trip or two back into the past.
But times spent in the woods or fishing with them is all good.

Hi Jon and welcome to bushcraft uk, it's good to have you and thanks for the introduction, having the boys to do stuff with must be great, it's the motivation for many of us, especially when they're interested.

Enjoy the site, if you've got any questions ask away, there's always someone that can point you in the right direction. :D

Welcome Jon! I just saw your post and as it happens I just found in an Oxfam charity shop a cookery book about the American Civil War: "Civil War Cookbook".

There's a few recipes, in those days still very much from "the old country", and some very general info about field life and I was particularly interested in their cooking tools and field kitchens shown in a few archive photos. Food and rations was not very regulated and it was apparently pretty much up to the men themselves and their immediate superior what they ate and how they cooked it. Basic kits pretty similar to ours, very moving to see these photographs.

Reading your introduction post reminded me of the book because it seems connected to your personal interests.
