On the 17.10.2004 16:01 local time TheViking made FIRE BY FRICTION in his room!!
I kid you not when I say it took approx. 3-4 minutes. I put a new and stronger string in my bow and used charcloth as tinder. And grit 120 sandpaper as ember pan. I did it in my 2'nd try. The first try was just a hole lot of dust , but the 2'nd time I had a pile of dust in my charcloth which smoked!!!! I blowed carefully, but it actually took care of itself and lit the charcloth. :o): :o): :o):
I blowed and blowed. The charcloth lit more and more and then I took a piece of paper, sat it into the charcloth and blowed. In 30 seconds I had A FLAME!!! :biggthump :biggthump :pack:
I'm so happy now!!!!...... (sorry about the bad english and grammar, but I just can't type right now... :o): :o): :o): :o): :o): :o):
Big CHEERS :uu: :uu:
(whoops, daddy found out that I had lit a flame in the house.)
well done mate, now go and do it properly

Well done fella i knew it wouldn't be long  :You_Rock_
Congrats!
Be sure to remember that you have to appease the firegods from time to time or else you will struggle without getting an ember even though you have done it several times. It is not an exact science... there is also mystery.......
bless thee oh great firegod in the sky, we are not worthy.......
Good one Viking!
Lennart
Well done Andy! I will have to give it a go now seeing as i'm probably the only one who hasn't by now

Project for new knife me thinks
Iv not mastered it yet. Made fire once but not again. Maybe i should take paganwolfs advice. We are not worthy, we are not worthy.... right must stop joking i think it actually works.
Well done mate.
I remember my first time dancing around with a big ball of flamin tinder in my hands.
I had the same buzz when i lit my first camp fire with fricton all night when you look at the fire you'll smirk to yourself.

Brilliant, I cant believe you did it indoors (not your bedroom) way too much smoke for my liking...
You will be amazed at how much quicker you get with a little practice,...
Keep it up...
I tried it in my lounge once and ended up taking the skin off my knuckles on the carpet...
that's one way to learn how to keep the bow level I guess!!!!
Can get smoke now, still reaching for a consistent ember though. I always think I'm going to have a cardiac arrest before I get there!

just re - reading this thread and the temptation to comment on some of the double entendres is almost getting too much to resist
I gotta say i have never even tried fire by friction, but reading all the comments on how wonderful and satisfying it is have got me itching to give it a shot at least
maybe we will get a dry weekend next weekend

Kim, I have found that if I use sycamore for all parts of the fire set I have no trouble building up the embers and can get a fire nine times out of ten.The one out of ten is probably my technique failing or getting puffed out.lol
Cheers matey! Guess the next step is finding myself some sycamore.
Thanks for that.

Jack, a lot of people on here do not live close to woodlands. The only thing that I can suggest is that when you are next in the woods get yourself some bits of wood to make a friction fire set, bring them home, allow them to season and then when you get a chance practice in your back garden or yard. It's pretty much what the rest of us do .
if anyone lives in leicester do you know any local woods? Sorry going off the subject a bit

Hiya,
The Woodland Trust (http://www.the-woodland-trust.org.uk/woods/index.htm) have a very good interactive map that gives loads of info on local woodlands.
As far as Leicester goes, I've been to Martinshaw woods which are fantastic. Well worth the trip out of town. I've also been to a deer park which I can't remember the name of :?: Sorry.
Hope that helps,
Cheers,
Martin
where are abouts are martinn shore woods

looking at the Woodland trust web-site (cos my memory fails me) it's between Ratby and Groby next to the M1.
Here's the map from the web-site;

I hope that helps.
Hmmm, I was hoping the map was going to be bigger than that :?:
Oh well, not bad for a first timer

That should work OK. If not, go to the Woodland trust link I put in the earlier post and have a look at a few of the other woods around Leicester.
