View Full Version : Belgian bushcraft weekend?

Hi guys,
I was thinking of organizing one. Maybe somewhere around the easter holiday (probably first weekend or so). But before i go and do all the effort, i was wondering if there is an interest in a gathering? Probably somewhere in the Ardens. To my knowledge, it'd be the first of its kind in Belgium.
I'd invite some of bushcraft school in belgium too :D, send word out to"nature-orientated" organisations like JNM, natuurpunt, etc.
So what do you say (gunnix? :p) ?

Hey Bartjeuh,
Great idea! As far as I know there hasn't been anything publicly organised. Though there are some commercial bushcraft organisations in belgium. Keep us posted mate, If I can I'll come! (that is if us Dutchies are welcome as wel :-)
cheers,
Jurjen

Off course you are :D, the more the merrier!
Right now i'm a little bit busy with school and such, but after my midterms, i have a far less busy schedule, so it'll probably kick off then. But I think Im going to send some e-mails already now, just so people know it's coming :D

We would be interested, keep me posted on the details.
Hi All,
Love the ardennes, I would definatly try very hard to be there....
Sounds like a very good idea. I'm pretty sure I can make sure I'm free, as long as it it not the first weekend (wintertocht 2009 PCdoAntwerpen) or the last week (skivacation)of February. Please do keep us informed.
PS I'm of to the Ardennes today :D

The date will be the weekend just before the easter holiday, so it would be the ideal way to kick off the easter holiday! :D
The site is probably going to be a scouting terrain near Houffalize, but i have to wait for confirmation.
If anybody is free this weekend and wants to give some workshops, by all means PM me!

I should come for this alone!
I'll try to be there.
Hi Guys,
Just checked, and noted the dates in my calander, so unless any disasters happen I'll be there.

The date is set
The location picked
http://www.vakantiehouffalize.be/scoutned.html
Now for some more details: It's 100 euros to rent out the place for th weekend, so the more eople, the less we all have to pay.
With that being said, it's great to hold a meeting like this, but we need people to do workshops; I can do basic edible plants and basic woodcraft skills, but i still haven't mastered the bowdrill!
So if people want to teach something/give workshops/show what they can do
Please let me know!

There IS a river, the ourthe. I'm not sure how wide it is though. It should be wide enough i reckon, but i have yet to see the site myself. I have only seen it on pictures, and read references to it by scouting organisations and medivieval reanacters.
According to the owner it should be here:
http://maps.google.be/maps?near=Taverneux,+Houffaliz e&geocode=&q=vakantiehouffalize&f=l&hl=nl&sll=50.142696,5.806789&sspn=0.018592,0.038452&ie=UTF8&ll=50.136122,5.80327&spn=0.019255,0.038452&z=15
In this general area.
Here's what he wrote to me:

I blame it on my upcoming exams!

I already have about 30 people who are coming :D. So it looks like we're going to have a proper first meeting then!
bartjeuh200
12-01-2009, 20:20
Just some more info:
-admission fee of 2 euro
-workshops are free of charge, except "groundoven"
-For that workshop i have to ask to give a contribution, depending on how many are willing to do this one.
-More info on the site itself after 31th of January
-Definite list of workshops + schedule: Definitely before 30th of February
I got, not counting the people on this board who'd said they'd come, about 25 other people coming. So I guess we should be abled to reach my 50+ attenders goal :)

Good idea. Are absolute beginners such as myself welcome ?
bartjeuh200
19-01-2009, 09:28
They certainly are!
Is this gathering still happening?
bartjeuh200
24-02-2009, 18:38
It still is! check oput: http://www.bushcraftgathering.be
I'll probably make it. I'll take a tent. far easier than a tarp in this case.
I'll take a few knives with me. Will firelighting be included? I'd like to learn fire by friction. I only got it to work once.
Best regards,
Michiel
Has anybody been to this site before or recently for a recce?
Is it ok for hammocks and tarps? Is it better to bring a tent? Is there any fresh water on site?
bartjeuh200
26-02-2009, 09:11
You can put up your tarps and hammocks, as i probably will too, and there will be a water container on site.
Or for the real hard*sses: There is a river nearby from which you COULD gather water.

Is anyone going from or through Brussels? I don't drive and I'm just wondering, before I start thinking of cycling or train/bus and walking.

17-03-2009, 16:38
4-5 april is coming ever so close; so please send me an e-mùail with what kind of workshop you guys want to do.
For "groundoven" you NEED to subscribe, and pay an extra fee: I have to know how much pieces of meat and veg I have to buy.
So: everybody who wants to come: enlist and send me an email at bart_jansen50@hotmail.com

Easiest by public transport is taking the train to Luik/Liège Guillemins and from there take the bus Liège-Athus to Cheras aux Houffalize. From there on it will be marked by red arrows. But there are only like 3 busses a day; one around 8AM, the next around 1 PM and the last one around 6 PM.
I'll post a more detailed schedule on my site shortly.

Have to check with my trip schedule and stuff.
Just got back out of Sweden (Winter Weiss with Nordic Bushcraft & Bearclaw): SUPERB but still busy taking care of gear and catching up on emails and stuff.
PM me for a ride and we might sort things out.

Thanks Johan, but it's no longer sure that I will be going, I may have to go the UK - family stuff. So I can't commit myself. If I go, I'll go under my own steam. If I don't see you there - have a great weekend:)

Bart, or anyone, any chance of these directions in English please???
Hi Alex,
- On freeway E25 take exit 51
- At the end of the exit turn left in the direction Houffalize, after that take a left turn to the village TAVERNEUX
- In the village go right on the first intersection
- After the last house go left, up the slope
- On the second intersection turn right towards the forest and grasslands, after that proceed for 1 km
The road is the second on tje left going down
Grassland is there at the end of the road
Hope this helps...

I'll do a quickie - and Bart and others can laugh at me - officially I'm "francophone" (in fact anglo- and germanophone):)
-U neemt de snelweg E25 tot afrit 51.
take the E25 motorway to exit 51
Then a left towards Houffalize, then a left to the first village TAVERNEUX.
In the village, turn right at the first crossing to leave the village
-Na het laatste huis, links naar boven.
After the last house, turn left uphill
At the second crossing, turn right towards the fields and woods. Carry on for another kilometer.
The tracks is the second on the left (or right next to it?)
De wei is daar, op het einde van de weg.
And it is there at the end of the track.
I'm going to get crucified for that translation - I know, I should be able to do better:o
