View Full Version : New Year Meet at Swyn's

swyn
30-10-2008, 11:51
I am posting this little note to test the water. (Please note that this is now edited to the Hoot in 2010!)

I would be happy to host another NEW YEAR meet for those interested.

Dates are confirmed as 19, 20 & 21 Feb 2010.

There are quite a few Christmas meets posted and I do not want to step on anyones feet this side of Christmas with another.

All the usual things will be going on....including the successful pit roast of tender venison! (although the Keeper does not know this yet!)

I would be happy for any other suggestions to be put forward too. (Mine is a plank chair demo)

Those with teaching skills have expressed their interest to come and host some informal workshops which is generous and kind. Thanks to all of you. I am sure that other skilled folks will step forward to offer their talents so watch this space.

The site is in the usual spot and can cope with 30 bods. + 500 acres of woodland in which to wander freely.
There is water, and main fire site under Rod's parachute.
There are loos and simple washing facilities.

There is shelter in the old barn and for those workshops that need it, AND in case of storms! (some will remember that one!)

£10 pppd for adults and £5 for 12-18 yr olds.

Please feel free to come along.

Swyn.

As I'm getting quite familiar with the "over the road bit" ;) : could do a tracking thing?

I am glad that you guys posted here, I would have missed it while on holiday otherwise.

I am definitely interested in coming :D

If nothing else I want to find out if Swyn has broken his knife yet. :p

Will have a think whether I am qualified to demo anything ;)

Hi Swyn

Been a long time since I stayed at the site so a weekend would be great.

The second weekend would be the one I could attend as it is my sons 1st birthday on the 10th.

No Chris. I use it every day when I'm at home. Much admired too! (the knife that is)

Would you consider doing a tempering/metalwork workshop? I did put mini forging but think this may be the wrong title...ie, dodgy £1 coins!! Sorry Aaron!

I'm very flexible with the dates too and can move into Feb but, 2nd WE in Jan could be made a little firmer...?

Cheers!

Being the new boy round hereabouts, I thought i'd ask first and not presume. I think I'm up for this if thats o.k with you Swyn? I'm in berkshire so we're practically neighbours.

Let me know if its o.k to tag along.

Thanks

I must apologise for not posting sooner.

Dan Dan you would be welcome mate, thanks for asking!:thanks:

I will be focussing on the second set of dates ie 16, 17, & 18 Jan as there seems to be a squeeze on time at present. I am still trying to recover from the damage resulting from the sudden snowfall!

I do hope y'all have a very merry Christmas and New Year break with your families:D :present:

Hi NatG.

You have a choice, either princes Risborough or Great Missenden from Marylebone or to Amersham from Baker Street.
The Marylebone trains get you closer and there are taxi services or on a phone call one of the other attendees may be able to run down to the station. (approx 3-4 miles away)

I look forward to meeting you. I will PM the exact location to you early next week.

Sorry to hear your plight Dan!

Cheers from Swyn.

Hi All,

Will be having a Kit Sale at the event to raise some money for the Help For Heroes Charity. I have posted a list of goodies on offer, at tempting credit crunch prices, I might add: on this thread here http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36787

I am going to the site with a Super SER gas heater to try and thaw the frozen pipes. I have been told that the lowest temperature last night in the UK was in Chesham at -12. Now that really is quite cold....No wonder my abode is so frozen up! I am comfortable(ish) with my basic 'shrafting skills, two duvets and a sleeping bag!

I have had conformation from the Keeper on the munty. I have also had conformation from Chris Claycombe that he is willing to do a heat treating demo and Rod on tracking which is fantastic.

The firewood is dry and stored inside so will produce a warm fire.

I think the only downside is the lack of children. I know mine can't come as the logistics of the shuttle from Suffolk to Bucks are too great during term time. Perhaps there will be some other parents willing to bring some young folks along even if it is only for the day. The cold may prove too much for little bodies for any longer though.
Andy W may bring Josh (6) but he is not sure. I have tried to contact George and am hoping other teenagers will see this thread and want to persuade their parents to bring them along.

The pond in the wood is certainly frozen and may be suitable for some sliding on if the ice is thick enough. I know it is not PC to say this in light of foolish behavior on large frozen areas of water, but as this will be well supervised I see no problems. just remember to bring a change of clothes! It will be b***y cold if one falls in!!

I could do with a big pot..Jason? Please. For vegetables.

Cheers y'all.

Please advise on your ETA at whichever station you will arrive at. This may help with collection arrangements and keeping an ear open for a 'phone call.

My daughter wants to come as well but she is only 4 1/2, do you think she will be too young? She does love the woods, fires, animals etc...

We are only popping in for a couple of hours on the Saturday, was hoping we could maybe join the tracking but im concerned that she could possibly spoil any sightings etc. You know kids are like, at the most critical moment they have a tendancy to announce things in a loud voice like "daddy, I need the toilet"! Just dont want to spoil anything for others.

My appologies for the quality of my demo:p

Nick, I think you missed the most important photos from that hangi sequence. The eternal question of creating a good hangi is how to get a good fire to burn in a hole in the ground using only the resources immediately to hand?

These rare photographs show the secret of Swyn's success!:notworthy

I am happy to refund money up to ten days before the set dates. There is always a lot of behind the scenes work and I don't want to be madly rushing around re-organising refunds and re-allocating spaces when I should be concentrating on actual organising the week-end itself!

Also - to all reading this: would there be any interest for another Help for Heroes Fundraiser Kit Sale? This worked well last year. You donate any manky old choss you want to part with to the unsuspecting BCUK fools who come along (put a sensible price on it please). We sell it, and donate all proceeds to H4H (who got £100 Last NY). Everyone's a winner, several people went away with some absolute bargains. Hi Rod,

Brilliant idea!

Last time we raised a surprising amount in smiles and cash. Yes, good to see you are ahead of me on this (as usual!)

I've put aside the firewood for that W E and provisionally mentioned the venison to the 'Keeper' Keith. I'm still doing the usual pit roast and would like to taste your now famous stew! Must remember to ask my dear wife to prepare the material for the wrapping.

I will also try and make a cooking tripod out of reo bar. I have a picture of one in my head, but that's no good until it's made!

Any other suggestions from visitors would be welcome, ie, fresh bark to make pots....carving wood for spoons.....Hazel lengths......(we are doing a lot of tree work at the moment so can cut stock in advance)
Not forgetting some short lengths of scaffold plank to make a demo plank X chair....

Cheers,

Swyn.

Please add 1 adult and 2 kids to my "party" (there may be more). These will be camping over.

I'd be happy to do a knife safety session for any of the kids/newbies attending.

We could do some atlatl making & throwing also for anyone who fancies a go?

Breadmaking, storytelling (anyone know any goo ones), axe safety: we could do any of this

Swyn thanks for PM.
Since this is open air camping, I guess it would be more a tent rather than tarp and hammock scenario.

Hi jambowl,

Plenty of trees to hang from, mind! Tent may be less draughty if it blows. We are on the 800 foot contour (which folks forget) so colder than you would imagine.
Tent or tarp....Your choice, just be warm!

Cheers,

Swyn.

Hi Swyn,

newbie from Bucks here. Although I'm very new to the forum I'd be very interested to attend your Hoot if there any more spaces for two (I'll try to drag the missus too).

I'll also send you a PM to confirm the location.

Cheers,

Arri

Swyn,

Is there a schedule of workshops/activities yet?

I have a vague itinerary Arri!
My main task on Saturday is to get the pit roast going and help will be needed there. One is operating the BCUK special leaf / fire blower! I am also going to make a plank chair as a demo.
Rod has offered to do a tracking workshop and there will be the firelighting (smoke making) hour! Plus making a shelter of woodland debris. Ah...Felling a tree too. That was fun last time. There is a picture of us doing that somewhere. It did fall where it was supposed to!
There will be a woodland walk via the 'pond' through our magnificent 'cathedral' Beech stand. Last time we tried out 'Millbank bags' there with George. I will also suggest trying to tap a Birch tree, just in case the sap is rising...You never know! Bring an empty plastic milk bottle in case!!
Someone else wants to try some carving.....There are also four simple knots that could be shown to aid camp craft....
We have a huge scrap pile on site, a bit like scrap heap challenge......George....:D That always raises a smile too.

That's not a bad list to start with.....Eh?

Any suggestions welcome too.

Swyn.

Hi Swyn,

Am I right in thinking that food (the pit roast) will be provided for one evening only?

Cheers,

What's the position on personal cook fires Swynn?

swyn
23-01-2010, 07:55
I have containers for personal cooking fires, but request that the wood for those is scavenged.
There is a big social and cooking fire under the parachute. I have gathered and stored good firewood for that and the pit fire.

For those who are coming, here's an update.

I've chopped another truck load of firewood and the venison is now hanging ready.:D I am hoping for a dry weekend, I don't mind the cold but could do without the damp!

I hope the sale goes well in raising money for the Help for Heroes fund.
I'm looking forward to meeting those who have not been to this Hoot before.

Thanks for a great weekend :D

After trying Steve's Dave Budd spoon knife I arrived home thinking how do I explain that I now NEED one to SWMBO:rolleyes:

Result, she said that I should get both sizes as and I could have them as my birthday present

I think arriving back with a spoon or two for her helped.

It was nice to meet some new people and see others again.

Once again thanks for all the time and effort put in by everyone.

Cheers

Oh, and just to underline how bad my memory is, that duch oven with the griddle lid, where did it come from again:confused:

Just done a tot up from the kit sale: we raised £115 for Help for Heroes. Cheers :You_Rock_

Many thanks to all for buying lots of used, tired, knackered & manky kit again. We raised £15 more than last year: so cheers for digging deep when times are tough, its very much appreciated. I will send a cheque off this week.

cheers
