Thinking about next Spring?
A seller on Ebay has some excelent augers that I think are perfect for tapping birch sap in larger trees.
Just search on: "SCOTCH EYED AUGER 1".
A bought one last week and can recommend as very good value.
(new,1959 vintage with govt crowsfoot mark).
No connection to seller.
Cheers,
jnc
Thinking of getting one of these, quite a bit lighter than my bit and brace set! A stong stick, should make a good handle.

I managed to find one at a car boot for £1.50 last year:D
I got a number of augers for a kinda group buy before, I'm sure I have a couple left if you want one - if I can I'll probably get some more if there is enough interest;)
they are like the ones in this thread (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26468)

a la Ray Mears, a stick with the same diameter as the drill bit, hammered into the hole, and cut flush should work
ordered mine at 23:30 new years eve, arrived at 10 this morning, now to clean the wax/oil off of it
