When I was a child, many centuries ago, we had a home made drawstring bag for PE kit. (something like a ditty bag)
Nowadays children have rucksacks and holdalls, but you also see younsters with these style bags on their backs.
I got one at the car boot and have tried it out, it packs up small, and carries well...also good for groceries.
You can buy a bag like this very cheaply, but this company will give you a free sample.
