My kit arrived today from Surplus and Adventure so I had to christen it with a tin of tomato soup on my back yard (saddo) - very impressed. It looks versatile in that it could be used with an open fire as well as its burner unit and the capacity of main container and lid are both good. Two points. One concerning previous comments about postage - they charged £5.95 whereas actual cost was £4.96 so the 99p must contribute to their admin costs (I'm not bothered).

Secondly the burner unit contained within the kit was wrapped up in a slightly yellowed sheet of a Swedish newspaper dated 1963 ! and the kit had never been used. Looks like their Army Surplus remains in store for a very long time!

There a great piece of kit, as they can boil a litre of water quicker than the swiss ranger volcano stove, (found this out by having a swiss army v's sweedish army race with a mate, not by being sad and using a stop-watch) only problem i find is that the different sections dont lock together, and it's like Krypton Factor when you pick it up and the centre falls out.

I know that its not exactly 'bushcraft flavoured' food but I've noticed that army ration pack/wayfarer meal pouches fit almost perfectly into my Swedish army cooker
A typical 'lazy mans' evening meal for me will consist of just under a litre of water in the large billy with a main course and dessert pouch heating up. When the water comes to the boil I pour some out into my mug for coffee and then drop a block of noodles into the remaining water to soften. By the time the noodles have cooked through, the main meal in the pouch will be warmed through too. As a certain well-known bushcrafter would say, 'delicious'
:o):

Cheers,
simon

Simon, you'll probably find that a lot of people carry some form of rations with them especially when they are learning wild foods (they are good as a supplement for what you can forage for and vice versa), they are also great when you haven't managed to get much from foraging.

Carrying rations in the Billy is also very practical so there is no problem with that. You will also notice that even said Bushcrafter was carrying rations on the last couple of programs

Serious note though, even the main wholesaler for the Swedish government is running low/out of mess kits and I honestly believe the sourse will dry up soon.

If this happens The cost of these excellent kits will sky rocket so those who are interested (or shrewd) should take the chance now and order one - surplus and adventure seem to have them in stock still so check them out there!

(And before anybody complains this is not a ad for Bearclaw as I am totally sold out. This is just me (Gary) trying to help out the members of this site where I can)

Yup, I did notice that he seemed to be carrying an *awful* lot of food with him
:naughty:
Still, one of the reasons I became interested in bushcraft was the ability to 'live from the land' a little. Like some of the more experienced folk here I'm hoping to be able to get by on a little rice and whatever else I can find. I'm hoping to book myself on a basic bushcraft course with this in mind sometime soon. I suspect that without careful instruction I'm liable to starve or poison myself :yikes:

cheers,
simon

It's a site I could get addicted to quite quickly.

Note to self...must get out more...

Just thought I'd add this odd in praise of surplusadventure. Apparently their computer chewed up my order, but the man I spoke to remembered the delivery address to went through yellow pages/directory enquiries to find me!

Bless.

To be honest I'll just be happy if it all turns up reasonably soon, it's undamaged and my folding cup is in OD and not blue.... simple things make me happy :-)

I was worried about that one too, I did get the OD one,(I think it was the last one :yikes:

OK, only kidding.

The reason I use them is that they do not charge extra for sending stuff to the North of Scotland like a lot of places do.

Why would people do that? Surely your still part of uk and hence covered by the same costs with the post office ect?

:o): Like you, mine arrived today and I also christened it with a can of soup(spicy lentil) on the back patio. I am very happy and it cooked to a rolling boil in five minutes. I put 50ml of meths in the burner, cooked the soup and then set out to use the rest of the flame in my 2 litre kelly kettle base to see if it would also bring 1 litre of water to a boil. Unfortunately I am a clumsy oaf and spilt the fuel on the transfer - so aborted for another day.

Mine also came within a 1963 wrapping of newspaper and I to am puzzled re the cost of delivery i.e. charged £5.95 with the Royal Mail stamp suggesting postage paid of £4.45 - go figure!

Still, with 2 mess tins "free" I am still happy.

Thanks to all who previously reviewed this product I hope to have years of use ahead of me. :super:

I was going to get one of these beautys but apparently they don't fit into army webbing to well

So I think those nice chaps at Bearclaw may get my pennies as their crusader cooker is the cheapest I've seen it :o):

No sorry , I had very rudely departed from the thread topic and was blithering on about Crusader cookers

I use a "normal" camping triange myself although the wife insisted I use the two burner Gaz cooker when she camecamping with me

Apparently she didnt like powdered spud or super noodles for dinner lunch and tea :yikes:

Simple, minimum charge £5.95, I got over £80 worth of stuff came in a big box still only charged £5.95.

A lot of places have a surcharge for the Highlands and Islands look at the small print in some catalogues, if it comes by carrier it can get dropped in Aberdeen or Inverness then bought the rest of the way with another carrier.
But some put on a surcharge then send it up by royal mail, as soon as I see mention of a surcharge I bin it, :yikes: as lots of places don't charge extra to send stuff up here.

Thanks Viking. Thats useful. I may get the swedish version but its a bit on the heavy side. The mini trangia appeals to me for one person.
P.S. Why the red paint?

I have used the minitrangia, but did not really like because it has no windshield and the pot is too small. But for day trips or for military use it works well.
If you are worried about the weight check out the trangia 27 (860g).

Dont know why the fryin pan is red, it has been around for over 15 years now, so maybe red was popular in the 80´s.

Buy two and they would double as emergency shoulder pads...in the 80's one was never without emergency shoulder pads...

and if you could cook with them too, well...!

I think I've found out the way to make things be delivered when you want them - soon as I clicked submit to saying it hadn't arrived, there was a knock on the door and it'd arrived :-)

Looks quite different to the one I had already: it's far more compact and a lot lighter. I cant wait to play with it. If only there weren't fire alarms in the office......
