What are folks thoughts on fiber pile and pertex tops as I'm toying with buying one.

The Montane Exteme smock is really warm. Two chaps used it on a TISO sponsored expedition across Greenland.

Snugpak sleeka is great too very very warm. Mine has gotten super tatty over the years and have just bought myself a Buffalo Mountain jacket, isn't cold enough to prove its worth yet but it seems very well made.

I have 2 Mardale tops similar to the Buffalo shirts and I really rate them. Just don't wear them round the fire as sparks will damage them :)

Yeah the tops seem warmer worn right next to the skin;)

I LOVE MY Elite pile shirt. Spent a happy couple of hours having a casting lesson in the p*ssing rain and although the ouotside was wet, the inside was snug as. I left the jacket on for the following couple of hours, and it dried out real quick.

If you are thinking of buying a snugpak elite pile shirt DO IT, stop thinking about it... you only live once.

Used Buffalo kit a few years back, nice kit but always found myself opening all the zips, fine in the woods or on the rock face but in areas with people around i felt rather nude sometimes :o
The only down side was with my xpd salopettes(?), tore the thigh with a crampon and never did get a repair i was happy with.
Give it a go, sure you'll be happy :)

I have a Snugpak pile smock. Really good piece of kit IMHO.

Montane exteme jacket is my latest purchase and it's awesome. Got it half price from the factory outlet too!

Also have a Snugpak softie jacket which is years old from when I used to be in the Saturday and Sunday club....very warm too.

Snugpak pile shirts get my vote. They're made (well, put together anyway) in Yorkshire, about 5 miles from here, whilst the elite shirts are made in some far away country and shipped in in bulk (for 20 quid or so cheaper, with a detatchable hood). I do my best to buy local produce, so you can guess which one I went for! They are a little on the generous side when it comes to sizing, I'm 6'1" 12 stone and a small is more than adequate. Kept me warm in some silly cold situations and far too warm in others. One advantage (apart from price) over the Buffalo version is the collar. The snug pak one doesn't try to cut your throat when it's dome up!! Available in any colour you want so long as it's black or green.

Snugpak is as about as ocal as it get for me.

Plus I pass several day per week. In fact I'm in Keighely tomorrow so that is my lunch break sorted.

Toots - I take it you are just over the "boarder" - Skipton way.

Hi - I have a green buffalo and a black Montane - the Buffalo I use in the field and the Montane I use for work. Both are exellent pieces of kit, the Montane was cheaper but I've had the Buffalo 15 years now and its still going strong - the Montane also comes with the detachable hood which is extra with the Buffalo

I`ve had the Buffalo Spec 6 shirt for the last 8 years and it one of my fave bits of kit. It weighs next to nothing and always comes with me on my trips.
If anything I`d say it can be a bit too warm sometimes especially if you`re on the march etc. Good to wear around camp but obviously just be careful round the old fire. Drys quick too and can`t be beaten on cold biting days.

I've had a Buffalo shirt for the last 10 years, not only is it going strong but it is in fact **** hot. I've had it from an Oz winter to a South Georgia/Falkland winter and it coped admirally with them all. The Montane looks good and is usually £20 cheaper that's about all I can say about them but they look equally sensible kit. Pile/Pertex works I'd like a Pertex 6 outer and Pile inner reversible jacket but haven't seen one I like yet. Buffalo/Montane kit works great although I have no experience of Snugpak kit

A bunch of us have Buffalo S6 shirts and really rate them. One was looking recently for a new one. Quite a few reviews seem to rate the Montane over the Buffalo (quite a fwe on BB), in particular because it's cheaper and comes with a hood. I think the pocket configuration's a little odd though (very high up the chest), and my mate's just bought another Buffalo.

Just on the right side of the border Ed, in Cowling. Call in and see the lads in the warehouse. A bit cheaper than retail ;) .

I hauled my Montane out of my ruck in the Cairngorms last year when it hit -8 to find that three out of six people sitting in the bothy had the exact same jacket on. Says a lot really.

I use a snugpak pile shirt elite under my motorbike jacket and it sooooo warm
i also bought the trousers so i can now ride all winter and be toasty instead of
freezing my nuts off as with previous winters.

I wore my Montane shirt/jacket today, not the pile one just the pertex with light thermal lining. Comparing it to a cheap softshell I bought.

Overall pertex is much more breathable - drier - and the big vents help to.

The buffalo has hand warmer pockets, do the others have them as well ?, as i'm thinking of replacing my aging special 6.

It may have as it has huge side pockets which normally have a mesh liner.

I use a Buffalo S6.
Only wearable in my view when 0ºC and windy or around -5ºC

I have a montane extreme that I got cheap from field and trek as they were closing down. Helped me sweat out the man flu this week. Way better than the arktis mammoth I had.
