This Midlands Meet will be held to coincide with The outdoors Show (http://www.outdoorsshowextra.co.uk/visitorinfo.html). The show sets the date for the weekend 27 - 29 March 2009.

I've spoken to the site we use and due to other people needing to make use of the car park we'll be able to take a maximum of 100 at this Meet.

Location (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/) is Rough Close. This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml)

At the moment the price (per person per night) is £3.60. The price might increase in the new year, I'll let you know.

EDIT: Price (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_09.pdf) per person per night is now £4

The camp fees will not include entrance to the show!

A more in depth explanation of the thought behind the idea.

The inspiration for this idea can be put down, in part, to the comments made in past outdoor show threads about the distances some have had to travel in one day. The main 'nudge' came from a post from Lurch; who posted a question about the availability of camping reasonably close to the NEC - so I've been sitting on this idea for a while now  . The site we use for the Midlands Meets is about 10 miles from the NEC :D - at the moment site fees are £3.60 per person per night and although that might go up in the new year, it's a whole lot cheaper than booking into a hotel (especially if you need to bring the tribe). It would also mean that some of that nice new kit could be put to (almost) instananeous use - or you could even see what folk have bought and think ...

There's no compunction to go to the show. If you'd like to come along to the Meet and just chill all weekend that's absolutely fine.

Sticking yourself on the list isn't commiting yourself to coming along - but if you can no longer come along it'd be appreciated if you say so.

Site 11 is already booked :D . Because of the number of people who could be on 11 we also have permission to use the adjacent camping field for those who have large tents.

Sorry if I've missed you out when I've transferred the info from here (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33978); feel free to re-add yourself.

Copy and paste yada, yada ... . And if you could do it alphabetically that'd be great.

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site the only people we can't accommodate are those who would do harm to others.

Now I really have no clue with it being the show and all that.
I know child boredom would set in after half an hour and things could get all tense.

I'll have to think about it really and get back with final numbers.

thanks

I hadn't even considered attention span :lmao: , I was wondering whether you were thinking along the lines of 'Mummy, Daddy spent ......' and how to get around it - I guess you can tell I'm not a parent :o .

No, as I was about to spend some money I would issue Adam with a 'difficult to open' confectionary item and Liv would just get a plain cash bribe;)

I What was the minor malfunction btw.

When ignited the gas didn't go up through the burner and into the diffuser. Instead, it came out here, there and everywhere and turned the jetboil into a ball of ball of flame which melted the plastic guard (including the gas controller on/off bit). The saving grace* was that, although the unit was a fireball for a good minute or so, the cannister remained cold - I've no idea how long it would have remained that way though. Afterwards the cannister seemed to be connected properly - I'm no expert though and it's the one and only occasion that I've seen a jetboil in use.

Would we be eligible for a concession on the tickets if we booked as a group

Until 30th November there's a special offer rate of £22 for two adult tickets; after that it reverts to £13 per ticket.

At the moment it's very slightly cheaper for adults to go with the special offer than the pre-book group discount - but that's providing that you're going with another adult or arrange to buddy-up.

It may be possible to organise a group buy on tickets but I think it's probably a bit early to do that; there are so many months still to go that we may get more wanting to come along whilst others may have to drop out. Basically (at the moment) it would be a pita adding some .... adding some more .... reimbursing someone .... reselling their ticket .... adding some more .... so on and so forth .... - I'm not ruling it out slightly nearer the time though* (*Disclaimer: That statement does not represent an acceptance to do it nearer the date).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ticket prices.

The first price is in advance and the second is on the door.

Adult £13 £17

Concessions including senior citizens, students (full time), child (5-15 yrs) £8 £11

Family ticket (2 adults + up to 3 children 5-15 years old) £39 £49

Children under 5 FREE FREE

Groups (10+ visitors) 15% discount 15% discount

Any which way you want to Sas, you could sleep in a tree if that's your bag mate. We usually hammock, tent or bivi at the site as our bit is only used by us when we are there. There could be a few feral scouts mooching about though. Look forward to meeting you.:D

... If the meet area is used for scouts will it be possible to hang a hammock or will it be a bivvy bag on the floor? ...

Like Andy said - hammock, tarp, bivvy, tent - whatever shelter suits you.

Because of (possible) numbers on the pitch I've booked the use of the adjacent field for those with larger tents. The communal area will be in a different place for the March Meet so that there's no segregation.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond :o .
Basically it's a chill out in the woods (on this occasion it includes the ability to go off to an opportunity to go to the Outdoor Show) with the ability to do some practical stuff.
Very little is set up prior to the Meet; this is because it's supposed to be laid back spur of the moment stuff and isn't in anyway a course.

At the moment the price (per person per night) is £3.60. The price might increase in the new year, I'll let you know.

The camping fees have indeed changed:

'Others' (the bit which covers us) is now £4.00 per person per night.

Day Visitors per person:

3 Hours Other Organisations £1.20

6 Hours Other Organisations £2.40

Sites price list (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_09.pdf)

How's the ankle Decorum ? is it healing better now ?

The surface 'scab' has now gone. It came out as a plug of dead flesh and now there's a damn great hole - at least the Docs can now see what needs to be sorted - The necrosis has gone through the skin and into the muscle :yikes: .

My mate has asked if anyone will be bringing any pigeons or rabbits etc to the meet ?

No idea on that one :dunno: - definately not a roasted pig this time though.

Will there be another raffle ?

Not on this one - having them too often can lead to apathy.

Because the show starts on the Friday morning and runs until the Sunday afterrnoon I've sought and gained permission (for those who wish to) to arrive mid to late Thursday afternoon and stay until the Sunday - so there's the possibility to do three nights.

* Disclaimer - On this occassion!

eem I have sent you a PM about your jetboil.

In case anyone else has a problem with their jet boil please read this link http://www.climbmagazine.com/JetboilRecall.aspx

Hi John,

best thing i can say is when you come into the car park keep right, through the big gate and then keep right past a few prefab buildings then past a new log cabin till you run out of track. Here you will see a cabin on your left with a small car park and a camping field with the wooded area behind the field, thats where pc 11 is. As long as you keep the field on your right as you come through the main car park you should be ok. The first time i came it took me longer to find the pitch than it did to drive there from home. hth :D

Yes, plenty of room for tarps and hammocks, loads of space, and yes small fires are allowed but operate a leave no trace policy (site rules).

What about fires? are they allowed? do they need to be raised or just covered over when finished?

To limit fire scars (etc) the site asks that the number of ground fires is kept to a minimum. We have a communal area where we have a ... communal fire. Plenty of folk have contained fires (hobo, firebox etc) at their own pitch, though this might seem a faff it increases the usable space on the pitch we can use.

What's a slow match Decorum ? I would like to see that please.:)

Hopefully the weather will be much kinder to us this meet so i was wandering if anyone would be doing some bushcrafty tutorials. With my impending DD hammock and tarp purchase i would like to know a few knots i can use with it.

I am bringing some filter coffee along again for folks if they want it and i will also bring along the metal bars which are ideal as pot supports for your hobo's, if anybody want a couple.

I'll also try and bring my Aldi sharpening block so folks can have a gander at it.

What's a slow match ... ?

Basically, slow match might better be called ‘slow fuse’.
Slow match can be lit and used in the same way as char cloth – the benefit over char cloth is that match can be extinguished (on something dry* ) when the ember has been put to the extender.

Slow matches are made by soaking natural fibre cordage/rope in a nitrate solution. Once saturated the cordage is removed and laid flat** somewhere airy until dry.
Speed of burn depends on several things: temperature of solution, length of time immersed, ability of fibres to absorb the solution and the ratio of nitrate to liquid.
Done well, a slow match should burn slowly (4 – 5 inches per hour) and will burn slowly and evenly even in the wind.
Overdosing the cordage makes for a short lived if somewhat impressive, show. Importantly a slow match will take a spark from a ferro rod or flint and steel.

Early slow matches were made using sodium nitrate bad. Unfortunately the nitrate had to be extracted from urine (:yuck: ) or even worse, from the ... 'liquids' found beneath heaps of manure :yuck: :yikes: – not a job for someone with a hangover …:lmao:
Although sodium nitrate is still used, potassium nitrate tends to be more easily available (and apparently absorbs less moisture from the air).

* The ember will be hot, so care needs to be taken when choosing how and where to safely extinguish it!

** High nitrate concentrations cause matches to burn more rapidly - hanging the match to dry causes areas of concentration. This isn’t very efficient and means that you’d need to carry more cordage than you actually require. The excessive nitrate also ‘spits’ more – more important to those who may use match-lock firearms than those in bushcraft scenarios.

Quick up date ...

I've agreed with the site that we move the communal area in order to give it a chance to recover after the beating it's taken.

Although parts of the communal area are ok ...

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/decorum_pics/11ismostlyok_a.jpg

The central bit will take a while to recover.

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/decorum_pics/communalareaon11_a.jpg

It might not seem too bad, but it's soft under foot and wouldn't take much to churn it up.

To give us a bit of a change we'll use the area below instead.

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/decorum_pics/tempcommunalarea_a.jpg

As you can see there are plenty of trees to provide easier protection from rain - Oh, how we could have done with that last time :lmao: :o .

The next three shots are views taken from the new communal area.

Also I have a couple of led torches if there's to be a raffle.

Sadly, due to some whacking great bills this month I no longer have the spare cash to cover the fuel and expenses. It's flipping tight this month as it is. I really hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to hearing all the tales. Hopefully next meet I'll be in a better financial situation. I've taken myself off the list:

Pre-set up?? :lmao: Other than fetching wood and water it's not something we tend to do much of. On the other hand, clear up at the end ... :D

... (It also might take me that long to set up my hammock and tarp for the first time :lmao: :lmao: )

There should be plenty of people around to give advice. As with all set ups it's a case of more haste, less speed. Get it up, check it out by lying in it (hammock ties may stretch a bit on each first hanging), adjust if necessary, check again and so on - and don't worry about how long it takes to get it right; get it right and you should get a great nights kip.

The disadvantage of hammocks is that you radiate heat away in all directions, it would be to your advantage to bring an extra insulator with you (kip mat, wool blanket etc). Depending on what you bring, this can either between (or in) your bag and the hammock or slung (and tied) round the outside of the hammock. My heavy option is a reindeer skin between bag and hammock, my light option is a partially inflated thermarest inside my bag - sticking it in the bag means that it stays in place when I turn over :D .

Does any one fancy a tree climbing session with ropes and harness? If ok with Dec. Ive got access to two sets of kit so that one can be climbing and one spare for rescue or help with instruction.
If memory serves theres an oak near the previous fire site on 11, failing that there should be a suitable one nearby.
Just a bit of fun, informal but safe. I should be there most of the weekend, but if not will be able to set up for one full day Sat or Sun.

It's fine by me.
Out of curiosity are you considering doing it from the basics (how to get the rope up the tree, knots et.c) or from 'I've set it up, this is what you do now'?

I'll do it from the basics, then people can haul themslves up the rope using the prusik loops.

I'll throw the rope into a high branch then climb to that, then explain how to get to the top of the tree using both ends of the rope to keep yourself permenantly attached to the tree with constant tension. When at the top then just absail down, the fun bit!

Thought it would be a bit like an "outdoors show" type event, as I probably wont be doing the show as proper skint and I need no tempting to buy stuff or start another blooming hobby!

Hi Guys

Sorry going to have to take my name off the list.:(

On the plus side I will still be at the show and now will be stopping in a hotel, expensses paid :D

So I hope to see those of you that come to the show, there is quite a Bushcraft showing this year, even Roger Harrington (Bison Bushcraft & The Wilderness Gathering) has booked a large space next to the Wilderness Camp and Ian "Max" Maxwell is a guest speaker in the theater and in the Wilderness Camp, along with your friend and mine ;) Bear Grylls himself.

No Mr Mears scheduelded this year, but he has been known to just show up. Hmmm bring the boxing gloves for them both?:p

So see you there.:)

:lmao: I think you'll find that everyone has different kit lists to everyone else but the most basic you can get is
1 - Shelter of some kind
2 - Sleeping bag or blankets
3 - Hammock if you're not planning to ground dwell
4 - Thermarest or equivalent
5 - Bivi bag
6 - Crockery
7 - Cutlery
8 - Cooking implements
9 - Something to cook on, though you can use the main campfire
10- Food (if you run out there's a big sainsbury 10 minutes away)
11- Camp chair (logs get a bit bum numbing after a while)

I think that's it though some people may come along and add to it. Maybe if you post what you're bringing people can suggest some extras.

EDIT
I forgot the important one.... your favourite beverage for drinking around the fire at night ;)

i usually use an old laminated checklist of my grandads for camping, but that was for the whole family in tents, i have my hammock and tarp, guy ropes and pegs, a ridgeline, webbing for the hammock. not really got a suitable knife yet as i haven't got round to making one.

im going to bring my raised old car wheel for a fire and my hobbo stove. think i'll need to bring a hatchet as i'll have to bring firewood?

its mainly the little things that make things easier that i mean, they're usually the things i forget!

of course, beer was at the top of my list ;) possibly a little jim beam black label too

if anybody has an old knife thats surplus, i don't have anything to swap but i could maybe make a flute while i'm there for it? have to bring extra bits to make it

i also found a euro hike therma rest on a clearance job the other day though i haven't tested it in the hammock yet.

cheers

Sales and swaps are fine by me - provided that they're done by forum rules (extended to include both myself and the site). Posting that you intend bringing stuff to sell/swap makes sense because it means that folk can bring a bit of extra money and/or swaps of their own to help fund buys; it also makes sense to mention what you intend to bring  .

If you decide later that you don't want to go someone else can pick it up instaed  . I think that, because of the nature of this Meet, it would make sense for sales/swaps to be available from when the seller/swapper is happy to trade. Those who have bits to sell/swap can list* what they've brought along (if it's lots - the jist of it  ) and we'll stick them up all together the communal area. As items are traded they can be marked off on the list.

* Include name and/or screen name so people know who to find :lmao:

One benefit of the list is that if the person who's brought something along isn't available, interest (first refusal?) can be registered on the relevant sheet - not a perfect system and it can be circumvented if two or more want the same item :deal: :naughty: :argue: .

Don't copy me either !!! First time for me. There's plenty of folks who will give a helping hand mate.

Friday night is mostly sitting round the fire with plenty of talking and drinking, Saturday will be much the same i think. :D i love bushcraft meets, lol.

Swmbo wants to see/spend some time with me on the Friday morning, so I'll be travelling in with her ...

Other halfs do want the oddest things from us menfolk....

Hmm! Change of plan, she's decided that it'll save her the 'bother' if someone's willing to give me a lift there; What's that phrase? Something like 'It's a womans perogative to change her mind'?

As these occassions are Meets and not courses we don't tend to make solid plans. Things happen when people talk to each other - usually due to casual converstions, seeing what someone is doing (and asking questions), seeing what someone has brought with them (and again, asking questions), someone remembering that a question has been asked on the forum and has come prepared to 'show and tell' etc. Hope that helps  .

^^^^^ well jealous.

work just rung me to inform me that i need my overnight kit with me tomorrow as i will be away until friday, i was hoping to come down thursday or friday but there is no chance now.

the plan is to set of at stupid o clock saturday morning to miss all the traffic and get down there sharpish. unfortunately that means only one night out. although if its snowing that might not be a bad thing!

anybody know what time is the earliest i can get on site on the saturday morning.

after some help in another thread a freind of mine has ordered a dd tarp and hammock so there is another head to count!

im going to make one of my world famous (slight overstatement) chillis, it'll be a monster pot so there will be enough if people fancy a taste (or a bowful for a taste of some of this "medicinal whiskey") though believe me... it will knock your socks off, i use no less than two types of powder, 4 types of fresh and multi chilli smoked paste!

really looking forward to my first night under a tarp, went the woods the other day to practise setting up and fire technique (trying to phase out charcloth) and i really didn't want to leave.

probably the last post i'll make before going now as i'll be away so hope to see you all there!

I know that there used to be a last leaving time (I think it's still in place - ?? 11 - 11.30 p.m ??) - it was put in place due to stop people causing problems for other campers. I think that the earliest time is supposed to be 7a.m - In any case I'll let the crew know that there's likely to be a 'long distance traveller'* arrival at an unspecified early hour.

* Those travelling greater distances have a bit of latitude when it comes to arrival times :D - common sense in practice ;) .

Went for a recce to the site yesterday - I found the large carpark by the open field and some buildings being painted - I take it that's where we park or can we go up the track off to the right?

And is mid-day still ok to arrive on Thurs? If so who do we report to; or just go straight to the pitch site?

Using the pic/post above -

Kit can be driven* up to the Bill Clarke Cabin/Wheatley (aka Guild) Field, but vehicles need to be left in the Campers Car Park or the over flow car park - the 'wide bit' before you drive up Memorial Avenue (the brick paved bit before the Campers Car Park).

* Check for spaces before diving down - there isn't space to 3 point on the track down :o

Mid afternoon mate :D . If we get too many arriving early they'll blanket charge all of us for Day Visit Fees - at the moment they're being lenient on us to help those who have long journeys (multiple hours in 'normal' traffic conditions).

Can't make it to the meet as I spent last weekend away doing this (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39675) and SWMBO would be wearing bits of my anatomy as earrings if I even suggested it (she loves me really:) ). But I will be at the show sometime on Saturday and I hope to meet some of you guys since I have spent so long enjoying your virtual company. Not sure how I'll recognise you though...

Yup, just grab a bit that's not suitable for hammocks :D . On the off chance that there isn't a space we should have access to the adjoining field - plenty of space :D .

Tip for all:

Don't pitch over shallow, dry ditches - they fill with water when it rains :lmao: .
