Looks like i'm still coming, and looking forward to it. I'll be arriving by train on the Friday afternoon, then walking to the site doesn't seem that far . Will there be anybody about in the daytime as I think some of you are going to the show on that day, shall I make my self known to the warden. Is any body else going by PTransport?:)

All being well I will have got there on Thursday PM and as I won't be going to the show I will be around the camp as I'm sure others will be. Look forward to meeting you.

... Will there be anybody about in the daytime as I think some of you are going to the show on that day ...

As Alan said; there'll be people on PC11.

... shall I make my self known to the warden.

I'll be booking us in on the Thursday so you don't need to do that. If you have trouble finding us ask a crew bod - they wear green tops (or Hi-vis) with 'Rough Close' on them - and ask for directions to either BcUK or PC11.

You'll be fine as long as you bring (and use  ) decent insulation, use drip lines (or similar) and don't use the 'T.T.T set-up' - as will all newbie tree swingers.

I think Spam's bring a spare underblanket for me but i will be using a small self inflating mat and a few blankets plus my 58 pattern bag.

Very similar - my kit is in a 35L pack* plus bedding roll**. However I'm having trouble fitting the bits I'm bringing for spam, Wayland and woodstock, trades/swaps items and communal kit into a 100L pack :neo2: - woodstock's large billy and the communal bow saw won't fit into the pack and remain fit for original purpose :D .

* Without stuff dangliing off the outside! .

The 'Twang - Twang - THUNK' set-up is what you can get if you rig your hammock up between trees which lean away from each other. The name comes from the noises heard as the straps slip, grip, slip again and is quickly followed by the sound of gravity being arrested by a sudden stop :D .

Why oh why did i buy this wretched thing ? must have been a moment of madness or water on the brain from the last meet. lol I think i will be using a ratchet system tbh Dec, as the tapes on the DD are like bungee cord.

It's like anything new i think, i'm probably a bit doubtful of it to start with but had it up in the garden and it did seem comfortable. I think its the elastic qualities of the tapes that's vexing me at the moment really, but i'll sort that with the ratchet straps.

:lmao: Most (disclaimer - not all) people find them a comfortable way to kip - like all kit, it's horses for courses.

I have a hennessy so I can only guess that, to an extent, there's the same issue going on with DD straps.
Initial set-up seems taut until you put your weight on it - and slowly your bum gets a bit closer to the ground? - If this is the case most folk just re-adjust and re-tighten (?? IIRC DD recommends this is re-done daily??).

Okay, so either my podcasts aren't very popular (can't be I've won awards you know!) or the show itself is losing its appeal, either way I have a wadge of free VIP tickets for the outdoors show still left over from the competition.

Those who applied have already had theirs, so if anyone else would like some pairs of tickets please PM me on here with your name and address and I'll pop them in the post to you tomorrow.

First come first served and this post is being placed on others sites as well. May see you guys around the Bushcraft stand on the Friday!

Cheers

well chaps , dont fret about the stretchy tapes on the DD hammock ! youll only have a springy time on first night after that they stop giving . However a popular mod is to remove the tape from the hammock and replace with good para cord in a loop that extends about a foot from the end of hammock when under load , then have a steel ring to act as a drip arrester then use the original tapes together with carabeenas to anchor to tree because the tapes love to soak up rain!! look forward to meetin you chaps, travelling up with John Fenna on thurs see you then.

Just been looking at the weather
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/2102

This is for Birmingham. It may not be as cold as last predicted. Friday night is set for minimum of 9c and sunday of -1c

Can anyone find a more accurate prediction? I really dont want `windchil minus 8` to be what it really is.

I certainly shall and hope to do all my meals on it. I'm interested in comparing its heat output with my BB wood stove aswell (which performed excellently at the last meet but is quite heavy to lugg around).

So, I'm read for my close-up Mr DeMill!

Is this a gadget thing? what are the advantages over the BB.my motto is this if it works keep using it until it breaks or until something better comes along and at 6 1/4 oz boils a mug of water in I would say 9mins very fuel efficient I would say its pretty hard to better at the moment we could do a comparison at the meet

Hmm, definition of a gadget .... :lmao: .

Is it a gadget in the sense that it's shiney when you get it and others wonder what it is? Yes :D .

Is it a gadget that get the 'must have' vibe and you stop using soon after purchase?
No, it quickly became my first choice stove :D .

In all seriousness though, it'd be interesting to see them side by side  - as a wood burner the BB should be more efficient  .

Thanks to Decorum for organising this meet, and to all those that attended that made me so welcome, the weather wasn't as bad as anicipated, just a few downpours and the occassional hailstorm - not nearly as cold as I expected. I didn't go thump in the night, my DD Hammock held. The beverages that flowed were excellent, the variety of food available to sample was better, but most of all the company was fantastic. Thank you one and all.

When's the next one?:D

Im looking forward to the warmer weather, i think the hennessey is better suited to it. I even stayed sober because the acrobatics involved in getting in the hammock, in the sleeping bag, wrapping a blanket round me (and 2 coats!) is just too difficult at silly o clock in the morning!

Have you told them about the possible change of name ......TPP.:censored:

Ah, I almost forgot about that ... thanks for the reminder :D .

For a long time I've been considering a slight change in the way the Midlands Meet threads are titled.
The impetus for this is that the Midlands region covers such a huge area and naming the Meets held at Rough Close 'Midlands Meet' could, conceivably, cause problems for others trying to organise Meets in the region.
Because of this I've tried to take inspiration from those who have attended, what we've done and also the site we've been using ...

Now, three 'influences' have pushed me towards this new naming:

We come under the umbrella of bushcraft and its activities.
The general affability of the members of this site who come to the Meets.
Rough Close has a large and healthy avian population :lmao: :censored: .

The new non regional name for the Meets ....

The Pheasant Pluckers :D .

Thanks to Dec and everyone else involved for a great meet as usual.

I should just say, before I am accused of trying to start a new bushcraft fashion, that the cloak was a requested demo of how to fold a cloak the way the Vikings did to make a hood as well.

I will post some pictures of my own when I get half a minute to sort them out.

I'll second that. The cloak and penannular broach are mine - Wayland wore them for the pics because I really hate being photographed.

Thanks to Decorum for sorting the meet, I'm well up for the next one! This was my first so I didn't know what to expect but it was grand. I'll make more effort to talk to everyone at the next one for sure. I think I've been camping on my own too much recently! Thanks to Mesquite, John, Drew and Scruff for advice, selling me things I need, selling me things I didn't need and free fuse for the tinder kit! Cheers fellas, hope to see you all at the next one!

OK ... hopefully* the next Midlands Meet will be on the w/e 22/23/24 May (Friday to Sunday).

* Yet to book. I'm on site over the w/e - staying (aka playing) until Wednesday and I'll book it then. If PC11 is unavailable I'll either book a different pitch (there are plenty) or book for the following w/e (29/30/31).

Due to the 'juggling' I'm doing at this end I'll not start a new thread until I've got it booked.

Thats the bank holiday weekend, any chance of extending it to take in Monday 25th as well?

Mind you I'll have to do some fast talking to get the wife to agree giving me a pass for that extra day :D
