My son gave me a Gerber model 1055 folder with a serrated lower blade and a tanto point. While I have been sharpening traditionally bladed knives for nearly 50 years, this blade presents some new challenges as the point makes that radical turn that makes it a tanto. There seems tobe two separate edges that require sharpening. Are there some differences or special points I need to be aware of in order to sharpen and maintain the edge? Any advice would be appreciated.

Is the Tanto Blade Ground on both sides or just the one,as this is the only thing that might be different to your usual sharpening procedure,As for the Tanto point I tend to sharpen them as I would a Chisel.

if it's ground on both sides of the blade, just treat each part of the blade as a seperate entity while sharpening.
That knife was a gift from your son, you don't really want to sharpen it or even use it. Have a picture frame made to fit it and hang it on the wall.
Then get you a proper pocket knife to use. :27:

Probably best idea I've heard so. He is in the Air Force going back to Afganistan. Maybe I SHOULD display it and give it back when he comes home. Thank you for your kind thought.
