One of the things I like about this bushcraft U.K is that a lot of you guys are into doing a bit of leather craft. So I thought i start a thread and ask you to post some pics of you leather projects.
Leather craft seems not the most popular craft. If you look in the book shops there is never a lot of books on the subject the one they have I find a wee bit boring. The best leather craft books are the old ones from the united states in the 70"s that show you how to make thing like hats and possible bags and mountain man stuff like that.
But I love the smell of leather and find It a very satisfying and useful craft. So come on don"t be shy post some pics of some of your work.

It's a SIGG 0.4l vintage bottle.
I picked it because I really like the flip lid.

I did make a paper template to get the rough idea but it was only when the seam (down the back) was stitched that you really get to see where the material needs cutting.
If it helps the order I did things is as follows:
Sew up to the waist from the base where the two edges meet.
Push in the bottle and mark where the oval base fits.
Sew in the base.
Continue to sew the split.
Slit the top half in 2 places (each side) while stretching the leather around the bottle.
Sew up the 2 sides.
Slit the front in the centre from the waist to the neck.
Sew the final split to the top.
It's amaising how big you you need to make the slits as the leather stretches quite a lot when you pull it all together.
Thank you. It does help, and was all i needed.
Greatly appreciated ;)

I like the addition of the handle loop - but the important question is: what's the contents? A decent whisky I hope?

I love your belts! A technical question for you though; does the stitching add strength to the belt, or is it purely decorative?

if your referring to the parallel lines of stitch marks down either side of the belts, this is just the stitch line, made with a groover and overstitch wheel. it looks like stitching but its just embossing really and is intended for decoration.
There are some belts made by stitching pig skin or calf leather to a cow hide strap and these are stitched down the full length, although I've only ever made one, like that!
most belts of that type are machine stitched too, although the one I did, was completely hand sewn (not for the feint hearted!)

Also remember that can you recycle leather from old bags and used stuff like old suede jackets have a look round the the op shops or car boot stalls. As well you can make or use improvised a lot of leather working tools you can make sew holes with a hammer and nail or a drill. Some of the tools in my leathercraft toolkit are a mallet made from a old hammer handle and a bit of shovel and a kids pink plastic dinner knife from ikea:rolleyes:

Was mighty impressed with your version so just had to try something similar. As I said it wasn't my idea but was all my own work :D
The carry loop was added so I could attach it to my belt - it seemed sensible to make use of the surplus in the back seem.
BTW The contents are port, not a big whisky fan.
