under blanket, the sleeping bag compresses all of the filling so you get cold. I use a bag and a thermalite, not great but i cant justify the expense of having a bag along with under/over blanket

purely out of interest, and knowing little about them. can these under blankets be used as a makeshift sleeping bag, if for any reason you have to sleep on ground?

they are basically a blanket made to hang under a hammock, so no reason why you cant use it as blanket. I have tried using a blanket whilst camping and it didnt feel right. IMHO

I love sleeping in hammocks as much as the next guy, and as and when conditions allow, il use one. but my choice of campsite is as often whats availible and out of site as darkness approaches. and those two rightly spaced trees are rarely an option, so it would worry me to be committed to a specialised sleeping system that i cant guarantee being able to use, so i tend to only use them in the warmer months
