Firesteel.co.uk are good to deal with. I have several from there, and have had no problems. You do have to get through the protective coating, but they soon throw good sparks :)

The cheapo magnesium blocks are worth looking at as well, once the magnesium goes it will light anything

hmm... i kinda discarded the magnesium idea early on, cause you only get 1,000 uses, whereas firesteels give you up to 12,000

And when you are starting out practising you will need every one of those 12000 sparks!

you scrape a pile magnesium filings then use a firesteel to throw sparks at the pile. The firesteel is epoxied to a block of magnesium

Firesteels are a must!
I have a Light My Fire steel.
Use cotton wool (smeared with vaseline for better effect) as tinder. It will catch first strike.

Yes, I have a few of both. The light-my-fire firesteels are far, far better. Are they worth 3x as much money? Dunno, but they are better. :)

By the time you've used one firesteel up, you wont ever need to use any magnesium.

I have the magnesium block firesteel, tbh I've never got it to work. I just stick with a standard firesteel now.
