Has anyone ever tried this? http://www.survivaltopics.com/images/dakota-firehole-401.jpg I saw it here (http://www.survivaltopics.com/survival/the-dakota-fire-hole/) and was wondering.

I have actually dug the holes and I am going to try it over the week end. I'll post some pics with the result. And before anyone bites my head off for damaging the environment, I am doing it in my garden:D !

Yup we made one one evening with the Scouts - works great! - REALLY hot, and uses so little fuel, both in size (finger thick was the biggest we used) and in the amount you use that for the effort it is well worth making if you have the time;)

i made one when i was much younger, no idea what it was called but it worked very very well.

ENSURE that the ashes are put out and any roots too, the earth will retain the heat for a long time so be careful.
