Sorry, below is a link to the camp site
www.middlewoodcamp.org.uk

The address is:
Middlewood Scout Camp Site
off Leigh Road
Worsley
Manchester.
N.G.R SD 737006

Cost will be £4 per person per night as per usual arrangements - all of which goes to Scouts, not me!

Also, if you do a search for "Middlewood" you will see pages & pages about the last few Meets that were held there.

Yes, there were plenty of people using hammocks last time.

There are also several fire pits and half barrels for fires off the ground.

It's basically potatoes, onion, carrot, celery (optional) , plenty of corned beef, water, bisto, herbs if you have them and salt n pepper to taste.

A long slow cook until the spuds start to disolve and that's it ;)

Hi all,

just had a response from Middlewood...

Hi Simon I can book you in for 31st Oct to 2nd of Nov but there will be a live role play group on aswell There will also be a bonfire on the car park on the Saturday night I will book you in let me know if this is okThe prices are £2 per person per night for scouts £4 per person per night for others I presume you do not need any buildings. I would need to speak to you about which sites to use. My home telephone number is 0161 xxxxxxif you would like to give me a ring to discuss details

LARP - plastic swords and axes.... hope they don't choose to attack the wrong campsites, especially after a night of passing around bottles of home brewed / distilled liquors!

I fully understand if any of you choose to back out... No problems at all!

Bernie Garland has just been in touch and has offered one of his knives as a raffle prize for this meet! He will post pictures at various stages of the construction.

Tickets will only be sold to members at the meet, with the draw taking place on Sunday morning.

ALL proceeds go to BcUK with ticket price to be confirmed shortly....

So if you are coming, bring some spare cash!

I'm happy to demonstrate the (unknown to Dave Watson or Ray Mears!) Egyptian bow drill technique which IMHO is much easier for the beginner/person with cold hand & a lack of energy to use to get a coal.

Quite a few of us will be swinging from trees that weekend. Just make sure you have your insulation sorted, either:-

an underblanket for under the hammock (Check out the DD group buy that going on)
or a half inflated thermarest inside with you (not my choice for a good nights sleep tho!)

There's a chance the Wood clan might be free that weekend  ... however a couple of questions ...
1. Are dogs allowed? (I'm quite happy with dogs on leads only policy, but it'd be day trip only if I can't fetch the mutt.)
2. If so, is it ok to sleep in the van in the car park ... I'm not ashamed to be girlie about camping :D

Bernie Garland has offered to bring a whole pig and his gear to roast it if there is any interest....

We need to raise £100 to cover the cost of the pig, which will be professionally slaughtered and wil have meat standards stamps on it!

So, come on 10 people at a tenner each or as many as want for an equal share of the cost ....

Names added to the list to show a firm commitment please ASAP so that Bernie can order the pig.

I suppose it depends on how many are in it to win it. Suppose ther are 30 folks interested then IMO that's not really raising an appropriate amount for charity.

In collecting kit ready for my first night in a hammock under a tarp, i came across a little bargain at a local car boot sale.....

1 ton lifting sling, 30mm wide, 3m long sewn into a loop (ie 1.5m doubled), £1 each. So i bought two.

Figured they would cause less damage to any tree i wrap them around and attach my hammock to, than rope or 9mm paracord.

Only downside is that they are bright purple.

Well it seems that Middlemud is fast becoming a testing ground for me and new kit. At Middlemud 1 I had a new tipi to test, at Middlemud 2 it was our homemade ventile jackets that got an outing.
This time Middlemud 3 "vertical smoke" I will be sleeping in my new handmade baker tent. I picked up the material on monday afternoon and the poles yesterday morning by last night Lin had the bulk of it cut out and sewn together. All we ( read she) have left to do is put a few finishing touches to it and we will be away with the faeries. I cannot wait to get it up and tested. I am fully expecting a few teething probs but It should work.
All that is left to do now is find a small section of relatively flat, non muddy ground..........not going happen is it ;) .

Bring it on new tent ........pig.......homemade apple sauce......woods.....good company.......what else is there in life.....:D :D :D :D :D :D

Oh Simon do we have permission to use the lake again? As i can bring along my 15 foot apache canoe for people to try out (at their own risk). OOOHHHHHH I forgot i also have 2 new hats knitted for me by swmbo (lin). she is in a making mood so i have been striking while the iron is hot as they say.
One of the hats is made from an old arran jumper my mum made me when I was 15 (19 years ago....OMG). The neck had strecthed out of shape etc etc so we salvaged the wool from it and Lin has made 3 hats so far. It just goes to show that good quality wool will last.
The second is a merino wool hat that Lin also made for me when she found a couple of balls at the bottom of a pile in the wool shop.
So i will do some testing and see which one breathes better and keeps my head warmest etc etc.

These came about as i was looking for a locally produced wool. I wanted merino but was not too happy about buying wool from the other side of the world when we have an abundance of sheep over here. So i started looking around for local wool but could not find much pure wool just various mixes and tons of acrylic. Then I had a dig around in my wardrobe and pulled out my old and trusty jumper......shed a tear, then pulled it apart for the wool.As my mum had spent a fortune on the wool when she made it so i knew it was good stuff, a quick phone call later confirmed that it was best quality pure arran wool. The merino one appeared as the wool was end of stock and already over here. So I thought i may as well have it as the damage has already been done getting it here.

HHHHmmmmmm a couple of weeks left to go...... what else might I need.......under blankets for the hammocks.....I might be pushing it for that :D

Cheers Greg

Right .... an update!

Raffle
Tickets will be £1 each. You can buy as many as you like - funds permitting! Buy your tickets off me.

Bring & buy
I will be bringing some unwanted gear to sell on. If anybody has gear to sell I suggest around the camp fire circle, Sunday morning would be a good time for us all to see what is on offer!

Canoes are ok on the lake on Saturday & Sunday only. AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Pig fund.
Could everyone intending to join please bring 2 bags of charcoal. Wood is scarce at the best of times and the camp site are having their bonfire on Saturday night so there will be a shortage!

Bonfire on Saturday Night.

We will be asked to move our cars for this, but will be given a space for them elsewhere.
Camp site open to the public for about 2 hour, but only the car park area so camp should be secure.
Site shop will be open - selling hot dogs, drinks, black peas etc.

Location of our pitches

The LARPers are having the Lodge and Cub field, so you may be as well giving it a wide berth!
Around the camp fire circle / top end of the camp site is fine.

Arrival
Any time on Friday. I will be there from Thursday evening (getting the best spot!) so see you there!

The warden has asked if we would be up for a working party day / weekend at some point in the future. If we did this it would really get us in the good books. Think about it and let me know when we are there!

Think that covers it all - if not ask & I'll see what I can do!

I would imagine there will be more next year - probably a working party (with the emphasis on party! :beerchug:) in the near future.

I'll be heading up there on Friday morning and clearing off again on Saturday mid afternoon (Like ships in the dark, eh Matt?).

So who else is sleeping in the woods on Haloween/Soween/Sowin/etc?

As for the working party idea - sounds good to me!

Note to self - must go for a walk around the site this time!

Depends on what time I get out of work on friday morning will dictate what time I arrive but I will be trying to get close to the fire this time . I am fed up with the mud down where we normally pitch its too deep and cold.
So I will race you for the flat bits John.........OOOHHHHH idea pack the care thursday night and go straight from work .............set up the baker tent and go to sleep in the woods.......How much sleep do you rekon I would get?????? not much.....maybe I had better go home ;)

Just been on line to Bernie. He has offered to supply the bread rolls / cobs, stuffing, etc for the hog roast, so if there are no objections we will add this to the £100 for the pig and divide equally between everyone taking part.

As a bonus, he will store them in his caravan so they stay clean and unsquashed!

You think there'll be space or a little 'un? I'd like to make this my first night out (well, in anger) can I pay on the day?

And, though I understand there'll be little in the way of facilities, how do things run? do you take your own food along and just practice bushcraft while you're there or is it literally living on what you can find? Not that it would be too big a problem, but obviously I'd need to know.

Hope to see you there.

More than enough room!

The site is a Scout Assc. site and has basic toilets and I think a shower.

Bring your own food and some means of cooking it, although you are welcome to join the "pig fund"! (Hog roast for Saturday evening meal! MMMM)

As with most Meets, people tend to bring a lot of equipment. It is seen as a social time by many, with the advantage that you can see other peoples set ups and test new kit in "safety".

Bring some "falling down water" for around the camp fire and be prepared to share as we are a thirsty lot! :beerchug: :1244: :beerchug: :1244::beerchug: :1244:

As for cash, pay me on Saturday for camp fees and the pig fund if you want to join in.

Bummer, been to my sister's today in Stalybridge, A search on multimap shew it as being not far away but, after searching for a while, and giving up I've discovered why;

I just typed "middlewood" into multimap, it came up with one place so I was quite happy that must be it, it even looked about right on a o.s. map but sadly it wasn't. This middlewood is off the A6 near Disley, it took a bit of finding and no scout site to be seen - strange that.

So (having found the right one), with the added distance I'm sad to say I don't think I'll make it this time, though if I get my hammock in time I might have a night out at the weekend so I'll be with you in spirit if nothing else.

But, hopefuly it'll warn others - it's worsley (west manc) you want, not near Disley (s-se manc).

Went to Burnley today to pick up my big blue tarp, 24' x 36', to use as a communial shelter along with Waylands big tarp, over the fire. When i got to my mates (who borrowed it 2 years ago), we couldn't tell which one was mine (he had amassed 7), so he gave me the three biggest ones.

And as i had to pass 'Winfields of Haslingden' on the way home, it would have been rude not to call in and browse, well to cut a long story short, I am now the proud owner of my first pair of gaiters.:)

Hi Simon ,

Being new to this Forum and just starting in Bushcraft I have a couple of Queries about the meet ?

Is there a lower age limit ? (Son is 11)

Would we be Ok to stop in tents (bit Kit deficient at mo)

what do we need to prove the Scout rate (2 scout leaders and 1 scout from west lancs) ?

What is the current share for the Pig roast ? :)

would we be OK to turn up for Saturday / sunday but not the Friday ?

Bob

Hi Bob and welcome to the forum, I think it's safe for me to answer some of your questions in Simon's absence.

No lower age limit providing they are accompanied by an adult.

Tents are fine, you won't be the only tents in the group. As for finding a level pitch, level is a relative term.

No scout rate, we all pay the same.

I think theres one trotter and a bit of tail left of the pig (joke). :) , I think there will be a lot of people chipping in on the day for a share, so the cost per share is going down all the time (just bring a couple of bags of charcoal).

Again you won't be alone in turning up on Sat and leaving on Sun.
