Just received my SASS Olive Green "not-Ventile-but-very-similar" smock and it's fantastic. A few observations :
- Service from SASS is amazing - they are so helpful and the workmanship is superb
- The design, fit etc are really excellent
- The sizing is huge. I am 6ft2ins with 45 ins chest and longish arms and the 180/107-112 fits me perfectly
- The fabric looks very simlar to Ventile. I held a single thickness of it up to daylight and did the same with a piece of Ventile and a piece of Fjallraven G1000 for comparison. Light just floods through the G1000, and none at all gets through the Ventile. Little pinpricks of light are visible through the SASS smock material but not much. On this basis I would say it is 90% as dense as Ventile but not quite the same
- Standing out in the Scottish summer rain I would say qualitatively that the fabric works in a similar way to Ventile. It darkens and stiffens when it absorbs water and becomes slightly damp on the inside but not wet. On the double layers it stays completely dry. With a wicking base layer and/or fleece on underneath I think you would be OK in pretty prolonged rainfall.
- The 20% discount is still available. I was lucky in that they had a smock in stock which was exactly the size I wanted.
Really happy. Wish I'd found these guys before I spent lots of money on other Ventile jackets !
