Was in a surplus store the other day, and found a really nice french ammunition pouch, almost free. So though I haven't really fancied the whole pouch thing before I got one. Now the problems begin, what to put in it?

The pouch(es) are made up of two pockets each measuring 10x8x4 cms and the lids are closed by sam brown type studs. On the back there is two loops for fastening and a welded D-ring:

The first thing to do was to treat it with some leather grease/wax to make it a bit more supple and to rehydrate the leather, it was a bit dry. After that I kind of looked around the house for small stuff to put in it. This is what's in it at the moment:

In no particular order:

Matchbox
A few meters of 550 paracord
A silva range 7 compass
A tinder pouch with a firesteel and some tinder (birchbark and tinder from fungae)
Sterilisation wet wipe
Band aid and compress
Skin lotion / mosquito repellant

I would like a back-up knife, but my regular back-up is to large for the pockets. The compass cord is attached to the D-ring with a larks head knot, it feels rather safe. Easier to operate compared to when I wear it round my neck. I will add my ranger beads but they are at a friends house along with my pack at the moment.

Any feedback?

What do you carry in yours? It would nice with a show and tell kind of thread.

Nice pouches, and a sensible kit list. Maybe add a needle and a small sharpening stone?

Firesteel.

Deep six the cancer sticks, unless you DON'T want to survive.

SAK or Opinel should fit in.
I would add a small torch.

Those are a nice pair of pouches. I like your choices of stuff. I would likely use a matchcase rather than the box matches, and add something like a Fenix E01 torch but otherwise that seems a pretty sensible and quite useful collection.

I wish I could find a set of these. I think my camera would fit in one and batteries, memory cards and small set of cleaning items in the other.

A sewing kit would be handy to have around

I find it hard not to use it as a survival kit. You see, I would rather have the stuff I use the most close at hand, rather having to live out of the pouches. But some good suggestions, A LED-torch would be good (also attached to the D-ring). Following the thought of the small stuff with everyday use, I think I will keep my sewing kit in the backpack.

And yes, I'm a tobbaconist, but not a smoker, we have something called snus (smoekless tobacco in the states), so that will most likely go there to.

I don't think any knife of a useful size will fit I'm afraid, a bit annoying, but on the other hand, my 9" leuku will work as a trusty counterweight on the other side of the belt.

I have no idea when they are from, my layman guess is that each pouch would contain two clips for some rifle, MAS maybe? WWII-ish?

I found a site carrying these in the states: http://www.marspec.net/surplus/product.asp?s_id=0&prod_name=308108+French+Leathe r+Double+Ammo+Pouch&pf_id=PAAAIAMONHANNEPA&dept_id=3036
