Hi Apologies for not keeping on top of the thread, joys of work

No idea for a venue or really what to do. Organising a meet would be a great way of putting names to faces and hopefully a few friendships made along the way.

So open to suggestions as i am a complete newbie to this thing

I've a few weekend already booked up for Sept but how about sometime in October? Though for me not the weekend of the 18th & 19th. Probably best early on anyway so the first weekend? 3, 4, 5th?? Just a suggestion...gives time for folks to get time off organised.

ok people, is a weekend or an evening prefered? Stand up and be counted

Saying either i think should be disregarded as that would lead to more confusion!

alpha_centaur
14-08-2008, 23:14
A weekend would be better for me, but not the first week in october.

I could probably manage an evening though if that suited the majority.

Hi Korvin,

I'd recommend setting a date, a place and duration and then see who pitches up, otherwise you'll be herding cats ;) Seems to be the way these things have worked in the past.

Cheers,

That's very practical advice :approve:

I know it's not exactly Lothians, but the Crannog has an ancient pyrotechnology day on the weekend of 11th and 12th October.

"Sunday, 12th October: Prehistoric Pyrotechnia - Lighting up the Iron Age Strike a spark and discover the many methods of fire-making without matches and the best tinders available. From friction to fir candles, there's something to warm everyone! 11am - 4:30pm."

Sounds fun......we could actually have a one skill focus for a change.........and I don't think I can come :(
I could ask Barrie if she would let us use the other side of the loch site to camp though.

cheers,
Toddy

Toddy....that sounds a great day...I'm happy to go there as the weekend meet even though it's not really Lothians....sounds too good to miss.

As for a possible venue at some point...Tyningham down East Lothian...large wooded area right by the beach...there's a great spot where its good for hammocks and tents.

Toddy that sounds great.

As i have said i have no idea what to organise or where as i am a newbie at this thing. Was not sure if a pub meet would be best or something like Toddy has suggested.

So peoples views please

I'm up for anything, weeknight, if it was a weekend i don't have the kit for an overnighter but i would pop down during one of the days and evenings, well i do have the kit but its all pike fishing stuff and is too heavy to get about easily

Where is the crannog, excuse me for my ignorance, it does sound like a good day doing the firelighting bit

I mentioned i was a newbie, would one of the more experienced guys show me a wee bit knife sharpening, i would like to invest in a good bush craft knife, at present i'm hopeless, i just collect knifes i.e. i buy a new one when the old one is blunt

Below is a copy of a post I made in the full members’ area a couple of weeks ago that might interest you:

“I was thinking over the weekend about a little ‘get together’ in September here on our little farm / small holding.

So…… the basic idea is for a laid back meet, nothing rigidly organised, just kind of chilling out. There is a small wooded area, mainly pine trees but we’ve had a few hammocks up in there no problems and there is plenty of room for tents. A fire isn’t a problem, although firewood is in short supply and providing someone could bring a boss, there is plenty of room for archery. If anyone wanted to do a demo of some kind then we can talk about that too.

The farm is between New Cumnock and Kirkconnel on the border of Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway and could run from say Friday till Monday, although if anyone wanted to arrive earlier or stay later that’s not a problem either.

The dates would be around the weekend of the 5, 6, & 7th of September.

If there be anybody interested in this that hasn't already confirmed, you'll be more than welcome, just let me know.

Okay, this is where I ought to have explained a little more clearly. Sorry :o

I'm an Archaeologist, specialising in fibres and textiles, and a fair bit of ethnobotany. The Crannog centre employ me to come up and work Event Days for them, so I usually say on the forum when I'm working, and arrange that the Bushcrafters can come and visit, or stay over on the land at the other side of the loch that will eventually be an Archaeological Research Centre. This also works for days that PatrickM is there or even just days like the Pyrotechnology one.
It's not a brilliant campsite, but it does fine, and it is in a beautiful bit of the world.

The Crannog Crew are very welcoming :D , come up and visit, pay for the tour, tell them you are with BcUK, they'll tell you where the rest of us are, it really is worth taking the tour, (and it helps support the underwater excavation  ) and we meet up on site. :)

Numbers aren't an issue, there are always folks who can't come and some who suddenly take a notion and do. We usually let the folks at SoTP know as well, there are always a few with boats around that like the loch :)
If you want to keep it purely Lothian :dunno: it 'could' be arranged by pm, but generally we're a quietly friendly bunch of individuals.

Let me know ? so I can contact folk in good time.

atb,
Toddy

Hi,

I may do the Crannog trip too, but I'm also asking if the event below, would be good for 12-14yr olds, who have done outdoor learning etc.?? -

Sunday, 12th October: Prehistoric Pyrotechnia - Lighting up the Iron Age Strike a spark and discover the many methods of fire-making without matches and the best tinders available. From friction to fir candles, there's something to warm everyone! 11am - 4:30pm. Also: Iron Age Bread Making Learn the ancient art of making bread. Find all you need to know about baking in clay evens and spreads for your bread.

The vast majority of meets are open to all, the only ones you might not hear about are the ones posted on the members only forum, and to be honest they are generally posted on the open forums also.

You can get jsut as much enjoyment and knoweledge from the open forums. The signing up helps maintain the excellent site and you get a coooooooooooollllllll badge, which looks even coooooooooooler on the BCUK jacket

:-)

NB. i am not on commission for the badges LOL

Yea you're more than welcome to come S_C_R and the dog too.

The reason that i originally put in the FM forum was that i didn't want just anybody who fancied a free weekend getting paralytic turning up with ten mates and turning it into a free festival. Then i realised that i was only sending out the full details by pm anyway

If you are coming along, give me a pm and I'll send you the directions and phone numbers.

Think it happened in Sept, but down on a farm land area near Ayr ?

I would try to join a meet, if the weather is wet n windy ! which means less chance I will be doing something else. I want to do the Balvaig starting out Friday Night, paddle across and camp out on Loch Voil then down saturday to Loch Lubnaig. Maybe we could do a trip like this ? I would happily have a non-paddler as bow paddler in my boat.

Route Card
http://www.canoekayak.co.uk/userfiles/file/04Balquhidder.pdf

I'm off to do 2 munros tmrw and some sea paddling, off the rest of the week. :)

The Crannog looks great but you have to time it right to join a group touring around the site.:o
