Hi guys,

Really enjoyed the Midlands Meet summer 08.

My question is:- When is the next one ??????

over to you Decorum.:D

Mesquite

I'll ask the same Decroum.... When's it going to be? :)

Got nothing planned after August apart from the weekend of 19-21 Sept which is the Herts/North London meet (I've got to be there for that one as I'm the 'facilitator' for it :D ).

Bootstrap Bob

I'm up for another meet Decorum if you're happy to facilitate :) :You_Rock_

I've got withdrawal symptoms already and the Moot has only just finished!

I'll ask the same .... :)

:lmao:

I thought I'd leave it until after the Moot to mention/ask about the next one ... Oh .... :D .
I'm quite happy to coordinate another - to benefit my sanity I'll not offer to book sessions on the ranges this time though http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/fighting/fighting0079.gif.

So you're changing your title from facilitator to co-ordinator then? :D

Consider your arm taken off at the shoulder Decorum; barring acts of god and alien abductions I'll be there.... Except for the weekends of the 30th-31st Aug and 6th-7th Sep (so that would be acts of god, alien abductions and family holidays... otters' noses anyone?)

barring acts of god or gemma i shall be there, in fact, if gemma does manage to injure herself again i might just bring her along anyway and we'll have a bush-medicine afternoon! with a bit of luck i might have my tent-tipi by then as well so i'll be itching to try it out, all excuses are valid!

Whilst trying to work around stated preferences and without checking with the site the first viable weekend in September is the 12 - 14 (with the weekend 26 - 28 as a back-up).

Keep it as simple as you like mate

Nah, it's not about simplicity - I'd prefer to not have the same situation that we did at the last Meet; activities pre-booked but no certified instructers on sitehttp://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/fighting/fighting0061.gif .

Hmmmm , mentioned the the little wifey last night that there's a midlands meet in September at which she gave a laugh followed by 'oh right, and are you going to it?' with a bit of an edge in her voice

Me thinks I had better do some serious groveling to get a full pass out for it. Any suggestions folks?

I really don't see what her problem is as I've only spent 15 days in August away on bushcrafty stuff so that means I've been home for 16 days which means I've been home more than I've been away. Bloody women, you just can't ever please them :D

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Tried that one already ages ago.

My little wifey is not in the slightest bit interested in spending time camping out even though she used to be involved with the scouts. As she puts it 'Been there, done it and now I love a proper bed too much'.

She tolerates me dissapearing for a few days at time then coming back smelling of campfires with a load of gear to sort out but nope she wants running water and comfort.

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Well, when is it? If Wayland is coming and brings his cauldrons, and we can get enough rabbit together, we could do a big stew. How would that be?

firecrest
12-08-2008, 23:06
does anyone catch squirrels on a regular basis? Or am I being a bit ambitious here? I think Im developing a taste for good meat.
I say we get several small animals together, keep them alive but wounded and let the kids practice their paw swipes on them as they run away, and the throat hold of course.

Of course after dispatching the creature, a self appointed alpha male must chase them off the kill and get choice selection :)

Right folks,
Now we are all talking about food, how about doing a list of things people can bring to put in the pot ? Who's up for it ? The only thing i can see going wrong is if your names down and you don't bring what you said you'd bring !! We don't want the case of doubling up on things as i can't see us eating our way through 30kilos of spuds and 2 carrots if you get my drift.

Hopefully Woodstock is coming, and hopefully do one of his game curries again, well tasty.

Would everyone chip in so we can get some game ?

what do you all think about it ? good, bad or indifferent.

over to you guys.:D

Mesquite

I dunno.... that ratio sounds about right for a person who doesn't cooked carrots :D

I say go for it and I'm happy to chip in as it was a good experience. I did olike the game curry for sure :)

The only thing I will say is that it does tie down one or 2 people for a good part of the day prepping and cooking. We'll also need a good supply of wood brought in as well so people have to be willing to do the wood gathering

Mesquite,

yeah, i agree with you about doing the prep but what if all of us did a bit, after all, we all want to eat it when it's cooked. I don't mind doing a bit of prep work, bit like being back home in the kitchen. I don't mind doing the wood either, many a weekend when i was younger did i chop kindling in the garage for my grandparents 3 open fires, haa, the good ole days.

One thing what can't happen is the "you don't work, you don't eat" scenario, it's not what we're about is it ?

Who got the game the last time as i can't remember !

Scrumpy organised the pigeons and (I think) the muntjac.

Woodstock had a pigeon with him too.

I'm more than happy pottering about round the campfire - was great fun building the cooking tripods last time, and preparing the pigeons was a learning experience in itself.

The beauty of a stew is that once all the ingredients are in the pot it just needs stirring and topping up with water every 10 mins. :)

Well, after exhausting my supply of rabbit at the Moot, I am back out this week and have two in the freezer already. The Ratbag has a few too if I remember correctly, and we should carry on stocking up over the coming weeks. I will bring as much as I can, but cannot make any promises on how much until closer to the time for obvious reasons! As for squirrel, there really is a shortfall in the little grey b******s this year where I live. I've seen more squashed on the road then I have up trees.

Quick(ish) explanation:
Initially the w/e of the 12 - 14 was my own preferred date; with 26 - 28 as a back-up choice. Shortly after posting the two dates, I received hospital appointments which would completely rule out the 12 - 14 weekend.

I should be fine, thanks for the offers though.
In addition to the appointments mentioned above I'm waiting to go in for an op that will keep me off my feet for a couple of weeks and I'm also waiting for an appointment to spend a week being tested to destruction in a specialist medical dept in London - the second dates will stand whether I'm able to attend or not - I'll holler if need be :beerchug: .

Hope your feeling ok decorum.

Hi,

Knowing that you won't be able to make the best choice to suit everyone is one of the very, very few low points of a Meet. I hope you are able to make it down, but with starting your Masters the day after it'll be quite understandable if you don't http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/sign/sign0013.gif

Probably should have done this before :o

Meet date:
September 26 - 28.

Location (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/) is Rough Close Campsite.

Price (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC%20Price%20List%2008.pdf) is £3.60 per person per night.

I'll aim for site 11 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) again

Family friendly - so your youngsters are welcome!

Can people please bring a bit of spare change rather than just notes - I have to use public transport to get to work during the week.

Each of the pocket campsites has a designated area for ground fires; to keep the site tidier and easier to use - outside of the designated areas contained fires can be used (raised half drums and trail stoves etc).
I believe that during drought that the site retains the privillege to ban ground/open/open (etc) fires for as long as they deem fit for the safety of both those on site and of the site itself - I really can't see this being a problem at the moment . The site, according to MAGIC (http://www.magic.gov.uk/), is a mix of Ancient and Semi-Natural and Ancient Replanted woodland – There is a SSSI which shares its borders with the S/E corner of the site.

Hi Heath,

I dare say that there'll be one or two around with a bit of experience to help out - bring some sort of insulating mat (thermarest etc) as you really will benefit :D .

Bernie - I've not yet managed to grab the guy I need to ask about the caravan. I'll try again when I'm on site again tomorrow evening.

I've tidied the list so that it's easier to read. Listing alpha-numerically makes it easier for me to shift anything relevant I may need over to my tally sheet :o - hopefully it makes it a bit more obvious if someone is inadventantly knocked off the list.

Bernie and Maxine Hammocks or caravan

I've been unable to get in touch with the 'correct' person to ask about the caravan - but I've managed to gain permission for you to use it from the Scout County's County Commisioner.

There are some down sides though:
You won't be able to park up near the Meet's pocket site.
The two areas you'd have the choice of using are quite high traffic areas - potentially noisy and a fair number of people passing by all day (and on one choice, possibly, during the night too).
Size of the van could dictate the choice of parking place.
You probably won't be able to use any kind of electric hook-up.
You'll incur an extra charge ontop of the camp fees - £5 (plus camp fees) per night.

Wayland

Yep, that same spot would be good.

With the mega tarp you need trees just the right spacing apart and they're surprisingly tricky to find.

Next time I go wandering at night I wont try to go the way that won't disturb anyone. :nana:

I have lurked on this site and on the side of hills for the last few weeks now gathering the wise offerings from seasoned professionals and feel it is time to go to a meet.

I am greener than Ray Mears' hat but have a tent, therma rest, a well sharpened Mora (thanks to the £5 sharpening kit) and a listening ear. Would it be beyond the realms of possibility for me and a friend to join this merry band, gather further knowledge and to try out my hobo stove?

we will bring supplies (game / veg / spices and whiskey for all.

Having a a bit more of a read, the idea of someone gathering wood, chopping it and making cooking tripods, skinning stuff and cooking sounds exactly like what a newbie like me (plus 1) should be doing.

Dunno who scrubbed off the bit about me bringing a child along, but well done! Just going on my todd, wouldn't mind getting a good look at one of the bison tipis though, a proper look at them this time as I've only had a quick get up of them in the past. Tipi fund is increasing slowly but surely! I'd rather get the wood burning stove at the same time, saves messing about, so I want to check out a bison stove too whilst I'm at it if one is available to have a shufty at. I'm sure I saw Matt Weirs' stove and that it is the one I want to get. If he ever comes back to BcUK I may find out!

I've tidied the list so that it's easier to read. Listing alpha-numerically makes it easier for me to shift anything relevant I may need over to my tally sheet :o - hopefully it makes it a bit more obvious if someone is inadventantly knocked off the list.

Not sure if this was a good idea, but I mentioned this meet to my Father and younger brother. They are interested, although my brother seems to think Dad may be working. I may get them to come in their WW2 reenactment gear, so if anybody may be offended by a German Falschirmjaeger or an Airborne Yank, let me know! I'll make sure they leave the deactivated rifles at home, unless there is a wish to see them!

I may get them to come in their WW2 reenactment gear, so if anybody may be offended by a German Falschirmjaeger or an Airborne Yank, let me know!

I didn't think this would be a problem, but I did a bit of checking on the off chance and I was wrong. A fully equiped WW2 German (or someone who looks even remotely like one) is likely , as it was put to me, to 'raise serious comments' from others who may be on site at some point over the weekend. No problems mentioned about American Airborne though.

I'll make sure they leave the deactivated rifles at home ...

I'd like to see them. Unfortunately they can't be brought onto the site.

Any idea of an approximate time for skinning of animals? I'm going try to get one or more service crew down to take part (or just watch) - there's still the possibility of passing youths 'persuading' each other into false memories http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/sick/sick0013.gif but we'd have definitive, unquestionable proof that we treat animals with respect.

Just as a personal opinion, I would rather not spend a weekend with people dressed in US army uniforms, historical or otherwise. :)

Nothing against the military in general, or american troops in particular, or even DPM army suplus gear (!), just a wish to avoid as much politics and the outside world and enjoy the woods for a bit! :)

Appreciate others will find that odd, but t'is just an opinion :)

You know, my £12 shoe market boots are far outlasting the expensive walking boots I got from Blacks. Just shows that money doesnt equal quality.

How good is polyester for keeping a person warm? I was looking through charity shops for wool blankets or jumpers but the majority are polyester.

The pitch should be fine (It's certainly big enough to find dry bits :D ) but parts of the site itself are likely to remain 'moist' for a while. Other than during periods of very cold weather, all outside taps should work. The reason that the tap wasn't working was because, although people knew, no one had informed the site :( . Because we made the effort to inform the site the tap was fixed to the benefit of all  .

As I put 'em together I'm probably in the best position to answer ....

Would you please let me now when the next meet is?

No idea yet - not very helpful, but honest :o . We usually have a Meet every couple of months - this one will be our sixth in under a year.

I am South Warwickshire based and the usual familiy commitments means i shall have to give some notice?

An understandable and very common occurance. We try to set dates that accommodate as many as we can but, unfortunately, most Meets clash with other commitments for some folk.

Where do you normally meet anyway?

We usually use the same location - although it's privately owned, our Meets have permission to book dates.

I can't find any landowners down here who will give me "official" permission for any access?

anyone got any tips?

Others can give far better advice on this one. The best advice I can give is to do a quick search of the site, something along the lines of 'gaining permission' (or the like) should get you some very good advice - certainly better than I can give :o .

Hope this helps.

anyone got any tips?

It is very difficult to get permission to use land these days farmers always want something in return or someone is already on the land, I offer free vermin control and as i have land around the area word of mouth is a great entry visa to other land but you have to know your stuff as there are 20 more just behind you looking for land....

If you can get yourself to Coventry Station for Friday afternoon / evening I can pop over and collect you.

Train from Shrewsbury to Coventry is about 90 mins (change at Wolverhampton).

Witchdoctor,

If you can get yourself to the Stourbridge area or the Black Country area by train i can give you a lift right to campsite mate, if you do, let me know, and i'll take my son's car seat out. I am thinking of setting off around midday/1:00 pm ish. :)

Thanks for the offers guys but I think with a combination of health issues and getting animals looked after and all that I will have to pull out of this one :( . Hope I can make it next time.

Hope you have a good time.

Having been talking to Decorum offline about archery he said that a few people were after alloy tubing "like arrow shafts" and could I bring some .... well I have found around a dozen or so red anodized alloy shaft that people at this weeks meet are welcome to have if they have a use for them. No carbons though, my father in law has bagged them already!

Has anyone got a spare hammock and tarp set I could borrow for the 2 nights of the meet?

My son would like to try sleeping in one and I'd rather borrow one first to make sure he likes sleeping in one before buying.

Edit.

Actually come to think of it I can use my big aldi tarp for him so all I need to borrow is the hammock.

I've nothing to trade as such but i have aquired a quantity of reflective armbands which snap round the arm. I thought i would give the kids one each, and if there was any left, anyone who wants one could have one !

I am thinking of stripping out the metal band then glueing two together and use them as a marker on my tent/tarp to locate them in the dark with a torch. Also got some filter coffee i am bringing along if anyone wants a coffee over the weekend. :D

I'm pretty sure I checked to make sure we'd be to arrive from 2pm onwards (I have a somewhat ... infamous .... memory  :o :( http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/sick/sick0013.gif). I've a tree to make sure of before we go on site so 'it'll be fine' :o . We, as 'overnighters', haven't been asked to pay the day fee so far - but never count on that lasting for ever.

Ok I've decided a little road trip is in order :D I did a little overtime (something I never do, ask my MD  ), so shall depart for the "Saff" around 11:30, hopefully missing out on the Birmingham home time traffic. I ran the route on mapsource and it says 3:40 mins, I really dont believe it, but we'll see.

Gary I'll call into Tebay mate, see whats on offer, anything, anyone else ?

BTW the guys at work have just done a group buy from a famous butcher in Stornaway, and theres a spare 1.4 kilo blackpudding going, so I'll bring that down, Gary will eat it if no-one else ;)

Aragorn, looking forward to seeing your stove, I'm bringing mine down as well, nowhere near as nicely made as yours is, still waiting on getting a laser cut one done. :(

Singe if you are of a mind could you bring your samples along mate, I'm after a leather cutter, as in tracing patterns etc.
