Hi peeps,
i know that this is a bit advanced, but i'm proposing a South Wales Meet on the last Weekend of February 2009. I think it will be Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd. Any how, i'm not sure exactly where this will be; maybe the place you lot went to at the last meet, maybe Gly-Y-Mul, i just would like you to consult your diary's, year planners and calendars well in advance.
23rd of Feb is my last day in the RAF and 24th Feb is my 40th Birthday. Sharon asked me what i wanted for my 40th and to commemorate 24yrs in the mob so i said i can think of nothing better than a Bushy weekend with a bit of a 'Wilderness knee's up' on the saturday night with 'like-minded people'!
So 'Like-minded people', i'd appreciate your attendance very much, hence the advanced notice. Thanks all!:)
I will do my best to be there mate. ;)

In the diary mate.
Spoke to Mark O at the moot - he used G-Y-M a few weeks ago. He reckons its OK as long as you stay to the left of the path down from the railway - the rest is still very muddy.
But not sure how many we will fit in there

Thought I'd said yes already! :dunno: It's a long way off, both time wise and logistically, but I've got wheels and don't mind a road trip! Plus, I get to use this smiley for the first time ever! :drive:
:D
on that note spam, i'd e be happy to ride shotgun with you, or don't mind driving down me'self, can fit 6 more and got a trailer for all the kit, if there's enought of us from up here that can go.
I would love to meet up with you guys, up till now fate has been against me :approve:

I was going to suggest BNI or scout out to GYM early Jan to see what the Bobby Moore is. Reckon PYF will be a little draughty and GP may be a little tight on parking, anyway, we don't do the same site twice on the bounce!

I think after our last visits and some of the amazing places we've been since, it probably won't be there..........
Blaen Nedd Isaf is stunning when the stars are out. Still remember the ceiling view last time with a fixed smile.
I think in February sleet it could be a little wild....
Don't worry Nigel You can follow me I'm quite close to your place .

Hi Guys
In view of the numbers that it seems will be attending this meet may I sugest an another alternative venue for consideration - Yellow Wood.
This would give us tree dwellers plenty of room for hammocking, good facilities for shovel runs, good parking, and most importantly easy access for all the beer and food.

Yes, see what your saying there Stewart, however, in my experience so far, the amount of people who SAY they are coming and the amount who actually turn up is usually two different things. I'm not having a pop at anyone or critisizing but many people with all good intentions, commit, yet when it comes to the crunch, something occurs and they dont to come. It's happened to me (once:o ) and i've no doubt it will happen again, i've just got a feeling that i'll know everyone on sight. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

BNI has heaps of space. For parking we could run a ferry if it gets really full.

costume meet !
in that case im coming as a" bushcrafter in winter plummage" does that count ?on a more serious note if parking is an issue try to arrange car sharing ( god i sound like Ken Livingstone ) Or perhaps we should search out a camp site thats on a bus route LOL. sorry im in one of those daft moods..but maybe ........ pack- horse.......cablecar ............teleportation booth ....going off on a tangent again !
Hey what about "BCUK the movie " a musical, thriller , costume drama think of it as a clever combination of The Matrix and Mary Poppins . But im affraid well have to do all our own stunts because CGI takes too long and would mean taking a laptop in to the woods , not very bushcraft! Im not drunk ! how dare you !
comments please i think its got legs ...................oh no it hasnt .

OK peep's, times getting close, anyone got a good suggestion for a venue for this get together? I know we have a choice but i think we aught to pin a place down so people can start planning. All suggestions gratefully recieved. ;)
I'm up for it,I've only been to BNI and GP so I'll go along with the more experienced guys.Happy to go anywhere really.
John Fenna
05-01-2009, 13:05
Somewhere easy to get to by road...just incase it snows or the roads are icy!
I can see BNI getting cut off easily wheras GP is probably gritted right up to the parking!
Dougster
05-01-2009, 17:37
GP has more shelter with the trees.
By the way, as it's a special event. We seem to be doing a 'food theme'
I'm going to do a venison and pheasant casserole and Will; a Goose I believe.
Anyone else up for doling out a little food?
John Fenna
05-01-2009, 17:56
Bacon Grill?
How about laver bread cockles and bacon for breakfast and lamb stew(cawl) for tea?
We had a little welsh saltmarsh lamb last time and pork and laverbread sausages, they seemed to go down well.

OK, parttly because the South Wales meets are democratic and partly because i don't want to take the blame if the venue is bobbins, i've added a poll which will close on the 10th Feb for which venue you would favour. Don't be shy as, if there is an overwhelming favourite we may close it early. If you have any suggestions other than the ones listed, please feel free to suggest them. I have heard tell that Merthyr Mawr is available but at a cost.

Well fellas im gonna be a pain coz i dont mind where we go , but preferably somewhere thats not too close to a public right of way like it was in the Breacon meet! ,i realise its a bit cold for the average camper so we'll probably be on our own anyway . But if not , ive heard you can make a good pot roast from a chav especially when they come pre marinaded in cheap cider !! though usually lacking in quality cuts of meat and very sinewy , but theyre easy to catch due to low IQ , but hey- ho bush tucka's about makin do .

If we do the Cowbridege site, and it looks like that's favourite at the moment, are we going for the 'lower' ground for the camp? The site area that is not at the top of the hill?
Dougster
12-01-2009, 13:29
Wasn't that muddier? If it's a swamp wouldn't it be better to walk through the mud rather than camp in it?
Theres a meet there this weekend.we'll have a look and let you know what it's like, have to agree I prefer not to camp in the mud.

M4 exit 35 head South West toward Bridgend on the A473
Follow this road past a large B&Q on left and a number of garages. On left there is the South Wales Police sports and social facility (sport pitches etc) the next round about should signpost Cardiff Cowbridge A48 first exit (left).
Take the A48 toward Cardiff / Cowbridge.
200yds straight through lights, Ford garage on Left.
400yds roundabout, straight over.
200yds Chinese Restaurant on right, long straight hill climb, road converts to crawler lane on left. Crest hill, 1/2 mile road starts to bend right, then left.
Enter 'Pentre Meyrick',
100yds take left signposted 'Penllyn 1/2m, Graig Penllyn, 1 1/2m.
Follow that road straight.
Go through small village with school on left 'Langan'
continue on road, exit Langan on hill.
Signpost on LHS 'City 1 1/2' (sign on LHS but is pointing right)
take this right turn and 1/2 m later, turn right 'Graig Penllyn, Penllyn'
Follow the road, right hand bend, up to the houses, left hand bend after the 'school' sign. Just as you reach the foot of the wooded hill you should follow the road right, but if you turn left there is a track, directly to the left of this is a green gate into a field of elephant grass, this is the carpark! Head to the top of the wooded hill, camp should be up there somewhere.

On our last vist we went on a wander and have found an easier access point for the high level campsite.
Continue round the bend from the car park, and immediately on the left is a small slip road. Take this road and after about 150m (when the road bears to the right) there is a turning area and a stile leading into the field on the left. Follow the track across the field and into the site. A much gentler incline than struggling up the muddy track through the woods.
Cars will have to be returned to the usual car parking area after unloading.

Well we seem all set for cowbridge.
I have never done one of these meets so need all the info I can get.
Water? How and where.
Food In the normal way I would use 24 hour rat packs, what the score here. I have a rabbit in the freezer which I can joint and add to a pot and can sort out a bit of stew but I dont have a pot that will feed 6-8
Loo's Willing for anything but would like to know in advance
Skills About the only thing I could demo is making Charcloth and using bits from the pound shop!!!
Liquid refreshment of an evening ... again a hint on the etiquette
( Thinks....Wonder if they will still let me play now ???)

Hi Hammock Man
Water - Theres none on site so bring as much as you think you will need - then add another 5 Litres.
Food - Depending on how many turn up we'll have one or two cooking fires. Generally those around each fire will share their tucker or divide up the ingredients so one person cooks a meal for everyone. But if you prefer going solo no-one will mind.
You could try pit roasting the rabbit - I've done it a couple of times and they come out good.
Liquid Refreshment - bring along your favourite tipple - its a very sociable group and theres usually a bottle of something being passed around.
Look forward to seeing you
Stewart :beerchug:
Hi Hammock man, You will need to carry in the water you need as there is none on site
As for food some use rat packs and some cook fresh on the fire.
On the last meet we arranged to have everybody cook something for 1 meal this worked very well and we all enjoyed the food,I think this needs to be arranged in advance though.
The toilet facilities are a shovel and a discreet hole in the ground, each to his own.
Skills can be anything you can do we're all open to new ideas.
Alcohol again is each to his own but if you expect to drink others beer then you should really bring some of your own to share, some bring home made spirits, such as sloe gin or flavoured vodka, rum and others and some bring beer, lager or cider.
Don't worry about falling off a chair as we've all done it sober as well as merry.
Look forward to meeting you.

Greg, pick a weekend that you are off and I'm sure some of us will be able to make it.As I understand it the cowbridge site is available as and when we want it (? Jed).
I'm O.K. to go any weekend, there must be one or two others aswell.
Yes Chris, when ever we want to, weekends or week days, no bother. It looks like the weekend of the 20th - 22nd Feb is going to be at the Cowbridge/Graig Penllyn site. If anyone is'nt familiar with it, the directions are in this thread and the other South Wales thread. You've got to bring your own water, so remember that. I'm going to reccy on the 18th for conditions etc and report back on this thread, just to make sure everyone knows the conditions and local weather forecast. However, it February in Wales so expect cold and wet!
It's not because it's February Jed,it's because it's Wales. If it's not raining ,it's either just stopped or just about to start.

dougster , you were wise to cancell your scotland trip , i didnt and on the third morning we woke to a metre and a half of snow and the road out had about 100 trees down across it so totally cut off, which sounds fun and was for the first day . Then the land line went down already no mobile service so by day four i had to walk out three miles to a near by farm to try and get food and antibiotic for my wife, which took 3 hours each way ( next time im takin snowshoes ). only to find there was no one at home. On the sixth day local farmer turned up on a tractor and towed us out so we headed for home sharpish. best snow Avemore has had for years but people couldnt get there. So now i need a holiday to recover.
Shame you cant make it Greg long time no see, see you all in cowbridge in a fortnight.
Cheers Rolly

I intend to bring a rabbit down to share but only have a 2lire pot. Any body bringing a pot a bit bigger so we can make a soup to go round. I will be away for a few days so can not answer/comment on the replies but the rabbit is on the table so to speak.
Look forward to meeting you all

Weather forecast for this weekend in Cowbridge: Friday, slightly overcast, dry, 8 deg daytime dropping to 0 deg at night. Saturday, slightly overcast with light winds, 9 deg with a chance of light rain late afternoon, Sunday, overcast with a chance of light rain from lunchtime into afternoon. With weather like this it looks like John Fenna's not coming then, if he does turn up, expect gail force winds with torrential rain!:D
It won't be the same without the high winds and rain.
I've got hold of some needles and linen twine ,so if anyone wants to give it a go I'll try and give a quick net making display(no safety net or helmet 'cos I'm brave and reckless).

Have you done a risk assesment on that sapper1? ;)
Should I bring any dry firewood or not? Also what time is everyone expecting to arrive?
The risk assement came out as a guaranteed fall from a great height onto my head but no possibility of even a slight injury.Although we must have men with shovels on standby to fill in the hole in the ground to stop anyone tripping and falling into it,and qualified physiotherapists to prevent the shovelers getting back injuries. Also two councellors must be on site in case any one is traumatised by seeing grass and dead leaves being crushed by my falling body.I have personal liability insurance in case anyone is unduly distressed by reading this post
I think we're covered mate.

I will be there - weather forcasters have been wrong before!
As to Gail - her problems with wind ARE a thing of legend but she is not to blame - it is a medical thing. I find that the GALE force wind produced by mother Nature much more annoying....

Don't you remember the late night sing-a-long Adam? If you did'nt hear it, you must have been in Newport!
Gents, words cannot express my gratitude. For everyone to turn up (apologies have been noted) and the new faces as well as old, for the entertainment and social gymnastics, for the god food, good grog and not laughing when i blew chunks and, last but not least, the beautiful gift i recieved. I cannot begin to tell you how touched and humbled i am (This is Oscars night, is'nt it!). Thanks, one and all.:o
I will be taking a few pic's of the knife and start a thread in the sharps section, but it's gorgeous. Please could i ask that, all the people who took pictures, any pictures, could you PM them to me please, i was so awed i forgot to take out my camera. Thanks all.:D
I'ts good to hear you all had another great w/end! I'm gutted...but I hope to see most of you in May (8th-10th) location yet to be decided.
