Errr....as the title really, general purpose axe for a newbie to practise with.

Did you have a budget in mind? a cheap axe could be a false economy. I'd suggest the Gransfors Small Forest Axe as a good general purpose tool, a pleasure to own and use.

It should last you your lifetime.

seconded, superb axes, and great value for money when you think of the lifetime of use you'll get out of them

or get yourself down the car booties ... you'll get a lovely old Kent pattern axe for 50p-£5 like this:
