Need another tent for moi.

I would like a really nice 1 man tent, by nice, i mean quality, able to withstand tough conditions.

Has to be light and compact as well.

Price range £50 to £150.

Cheers all.

This is the jack wolfskin gossamer.

I regulalry go backpacking in snowdonia with 2 mates so thers 3 of us and i take a JW llighthouse 1 RT for 2 of us and my other m8 takes a gossammer.

There great tents very lightweight durable hardwearing and brilliant in snow and wind

If your willing to strecth get the lighthouse but it may be unnessicarliy big for 1 person unless your like me and like some kit space.

If not get the gossammer

The MSR Hubba 1 is the best solo tent I've ever tried.

One of the important things I look for is the ability to sit up inside. Good headroom in this tent. Additionally, it is extremely well made, or at least it was when I bought mine.

It says it has to be pitched tail to wind, rather difficult in a swirling wind, plus it recommends it for spring and summer only, i.e 2 season.

Have a look at the Aztec Esquina Solo.

Have a look at tarptent.com They're not four season use but are about 1/3 the weight of a solo tent. To use it in winter you'd want a bivi bag as well. I'm waiting on delivery of their 'Contrail'.

I'd second the Aztec Esquina Solo... unfortunately I recently sold mine but they're relatively cheap (under £100), easy to pitch after the first time and bombproof.
For that kind of money I can't think of many high end ones. The Integral Designs Mk1 Lite is excellent for alpine-type stuff and extremely light for its strength, the Hilleberg Akto has a good enough reputation that I don't need to say more and their new tent the Soulo is appealing to me too. All of them will be quite a bit above your budget though

This is really just a stopgap until i can afford to get myself another, more permanent type of tent, so ALL recommendations are welcome.

Btw i just found the Antec Esquina Solo for £69.99, should i order one or wait for more suggestions?

EDIT, Hmm 30 seconds of searching and i have found it for £59.99, looks like a nice tent as well.

Everyone else, thanks for your suggestions also.

I have a beach shelter with a door...not very sophisticated but it works

16-06-2008, 11:42
There's a new model of the Esquina and an older one. I'm not too sure of the subtler differences - they look superficially the same, however the older models are a subdued brown colour; the new ones are bright orange. Worth bearing in mind if you want to blend in a bit. I guess the tents around the £60 price are the older style.

Bushcraft4life
16-06-2008, 11:52
Yep, i think they are the older ones, i don't think i'll get one of them then, the Orange is about £100 so still within budget with £50 left over to go into the Cegga Axe pot.

The Orange looks ace as well :D

I'd prefer the older style if it was me, even more so for the cheaper price. I wouldn't dismiss it just because there's a newer model out. Three of my mates have the old style and one has the new one. As I said, the only obvious difference seems to be the colour.

Bushcraft4life
16-06-2008, 12:02
Hmm seems a bit strange, £40 extra for the colour is a little extreme.

I will try and look at some reviews, if there are no or few beneficial changes then i'll just get the older version.

If the £60 one you've found is at Gear Zone, they're out of stock, and it's been like that for months. If you find a cheap one though, be sure to post a link in this thread. I'm sure someone would find it useful.

Yeah it was :( i was going to give them a ring.

Seems like everywhere is out of stock for the older version due to the pricedrop, i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't actually have anymore old ones left to get in stock.

the new 'orange' tigerpaws at Argos is coming down in price.... not tried it myself but the original one was considered to be a lot of tent for little dosh...

That's a great spot Don. I have one of the original one's that I got from Amazon marketplace and it's a cracking little tent for the money. Packs up small and is very light.

I must admit I took a bivy bag with me to put my sleeping bag in on the first occasion I used it, but I've had no problems. I sealed the seams before first use, but that's all I've done.

I have one of the Argos 'tiger paw' tents, very well, made, and if this new version is as good, you can't go wrong

Hmm, i just don't trust them, always had problems with those Pro Action Tents before and would prefer something a lot more quality.

If you can stretch to £200, the MacPac Microlight (http://www.buachaille.com/p2099-2-17/1-Man-Tents/Macpac-Microlight.html) is a great one-man tent. Goes up dead easy, even in bad weather, and it's about as bomb-proof as a 1.6kg one-man tent can be.

Bushcraft4life

Hmm, bit out of my price range right now Greg, plus it doesn't seem like there is much room for kit.

I would recomenned the Coleman Viper tent. I have used this tent for many years without any problem an it fall within the price range that you are looking at.
It only ways only 4lbs when packed which is not to heavy carry on a rucksack.

I bought a second hand Mountain Hardwear "Mountain Wing" for £75 and its the business! It has withstanded some harsh wind and rain and plenty of gear space. Not sure how much it retails for new but if you can find one second hand I highly recommend.

I'll second the recommendation for the tiger paws 1 man. The zip is the achilles heel but I've used mine wild camping for at least two years in snow, gales and torrential downpours.I used it every night along the pennine way last November and nearly took flying lessons one night on LLanberis pass. Next day on Snowden we talked to two lads whose mate had gone home in a huff when he woke up shrinkwrapped in his £300 tent. Two tiger paws (£5 each end of stock sale) handled it beautifully It (apart from the zip) has taken anything thrown at it in style.

Sorry about the misunderstanding in my earlier post i meant to say that the Lighthouse is good 4 season and the gossamer is good 2 poss 3 season but that would be stretching the limits

As said before i look for the ability to sit upright in a tent and a sizeable vestibule for all your stuff...

Thanks for the suggestions, if this Argos tent is as good as some of you say it is, i will go for that one for now :)

Certainly the current Argos 1 man tent (£33 - but I think it may go lower in future)
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3400779/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CGarden%2C+ DIY+and+leisure%7C9554618/c_2/2%7Ccat_9554618%7CCamping+and+ caravanning%7C9554619/c_3/3%7Ccat_9554619%7CTents%7C9554 630.htm#tab3
looks the same as the old Tiger Paw, which in turn was a copy of the Sierra designs Light Year.

Considering the old Tiger Paw:

It is 2kg, not bad as the very expensive hilleberg Akto is only 500g less, and the extra weight seems to have gone on a robust groundsheet.

High quality aluminium poles - most cheap tents have glassfibre.

No problem with waterproofing of the fly or groundsheet. I once needed a dab of seam sealant in one spot after about 3 years use

Mossi net is indeed midge proof.

Small pack size.

The zip on the fly will fail. Mine has always been a bit dodgy and is now kaput.

The label says not fire resistant. I've not tested it.

Otherwise it is a great tent - there is a load of stuff on the web and even Cameron McNeish raved about it.

Did you replace the zip, Doc?

Doc
19-06-2008, 16:47
Not yet. There is a velcro flap over the zip but I wouldn't trust it in wind. I'm going to have to source a new zip as its still a very good tent.

I don't know if the new models have better zips or not.

I've just replaced the zip on mine with a chunky nylon one bought from pennine outdoors

http://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/pennine-outdoor-fabrics.asp

I've used them before and always found them useful (usual blather about having no connection etc)
