Following on from this (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=404264&postcount=217) thread

Meet dates (still to be finalised):
June - 27 - 29 (It's possible that the site is fully booked - 11 doesn't get used much though so it'd be worth checking with the site)
July - 18 - 20 (a fortnight prior to the Bushmoot)
or
July 25 - 27 (the weekend before the Moot).

Location (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/) is Rough Close Campsite.

Price (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC%20Price%20List%2008.pdf) is £3.60 per person per night.

Family friendly - so your youngsters are welcome!

Can people please bring a bit of spare change rather than just notes - I have to use public transport to get to work during the week.

Each of the pocket campsites has a designated area for ground fires; to keep the site tidier and easier to use - outside of the designated areas contained fires can be used (raised half drums and trail stoves etc).
I believe that during drought that the site retains the privillege to ban ground/open/open (etc) fires for as long as they deem fit for the safety of both those on site and of the site itself - I really can't see this being a problem at the moment . The site, according to MAGIC, is a mix of Ancient and Semi-Natural and Ancient Replanted woodland – There is a SSSI which shares its borders with the S/E corner of the site - the MAGIC site is being worked on at the moment but I'll enable a link as soon as I can.

Oh, and I'll aim for site 11 again :D

I'm also open to booking archery and/or shooting (.177 airrifles)

List (copy, paste and add yourself ..... yada, yada, yada)

Err...don't you need to change the month...?

With the site being slow (multi time-outs) and my scumputer repeatedly trying (and eventually succeeding) to do an auto shut down to activate updates I went for the get it up and then play with it approach - but yes the date needed changing

With the site being slow (multi time-outs) ......

34 minutes of trying to post this question :yikes:

Could a Mod put the i in Midlands in the thread title - please.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I've finally worked out that I could do that for myself :twak:

EDIT 2: And then I found out that it only looked like I could do it myself :twak: :slap: :twak:

I use the search facility to keep info in the Meet threads in line with each other - I know :22: - and spelling mistakes beguile the search facility (and others might use the facility too :lmao: )

We have to get in early because it's the busy season, both for pitches and for booked activities.

Would anyone be up for a replay of the raffle run at the last Meet? I've no problem with sorting something (or things) to raffle off.

EDIT:

I should have mentioned pricing for Air Rifle shooting is £25.00 per hour (Site Instructor Led and max 12 per session) and
Archery is £22.00 per hour (Site Instructor Led and max 12 per session)
Again, I'm inclined to put a limt of 6 - 8 people per session; allowing each person the chance to get a good few rounds down the range(s).

I'm up for doing a raffle but rather than you get the prizes Dec how about this instead?

Everyone brings something to put in the raffle and we make 3 or 4 secret 'goody bags' with them. Then people can buy any number of tickets at perhaps 50p per ticket and winners pick a bag without knowing what's in it. The proceeds go towards either Rough Close for letting us use such a wonderful place for us to stay at or your forestry class equipment.

How does that sound to everyone?

...... if all goes to plan ......

All went according to plan ...... for once :D . We're booked onto site eleven for the w/e of 18 - 20 July.

I've talked to the site, but not booked, the air rifles or archery as I'd forgotten to ask Mesquite whether his possible extra two were also possible shooters ...... and to see whether others would like to shoot on either or both ranges.

So far, for shooting, we have:
Mesquite (+ possible 2 extra) - Archery and Air rifle
maverick (can't make July18th-20th) - Archery and air rifle
Bootstrap Bob - Archery.
Wallenstein - rifles.
decorum - both - to make up numbers.

maverick - I've left you in in the hope that you might be able to join us.

Air Rifle shooting is £25.00 per hour (Site Instructor Led and max 12 per session) and
Archery is £22.00 per hour (Site Instructor Led and max 12 per session)
Again, I'm inclined to put a limit of 6 - 8 people per hour session; allowing each participant the chance to get a good few rounds down the range(s).

I've finally found out what the 'woodstore' on eleven is. It's a ...... woodstore! And the logs which had been conveniently cut to seat size are in fact ...... seats - Amazing deductive powers :lmao:

Erm, may not be there anymore - unless it became concealed. The site's quite busy at the moment and site eleven is used more regularly than it normally would be. It's been used at least once since the Meet and, I believe, is due to be used again quite soon.
I was there yesterday :oI - but should be on site a few times prior to the Meet, so if you P.M the location to me I'll do my best to get down there and pick it up.

IMPORTANT NOTE!:

Whilst I'm remembering - There is a legal requirement for using airrifles. Each participant must declare (and sign a form) stating that there is no legal restriction on them using any form of fire arm. This is the pdf file (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/Rifle%20Application.pdf) that needs to be filled out - parents need to sign for the children.
If you do not fill out and sign the form(s) you, or your child, will not even be allowed to pick a rifle up. - This note refers solely to using the airrifles and does not apply to archery.

...... a raffle ...... The proceeds go towards either Rough Close ...... or your forestry class equipment. ......

The forrestry bit's done now (the saw was given back to swmbo) and we'll be giving a fair chunk of cash to the site through fees - so if a raffle happens, and lack of any feedback isn't making it look like a very popular idea, how about all raffle proceeds going to aid the running of BcUK? At the end of the day we can only go to the Meets because this site exists.

Not sure what you mean Scrumpy - but all air rifles are covered by the firearms act - Scouting only allows air rifles of 12 ft/lbs (the legal limit prior to the requirement of an FAC) or less, which have a calibre of 0.177", to be used on their ranges.

EDIT: The bit that covers 'Been naughty and been caught' definately applies to all potential shooters though.

...... what distance are they fired from? Might be interested.

Distance ????......Hmm ....... More suited to novices and plinking ...... 10 meters max - at a, generous, guess.

I presume the £25 an hour is the group rate for the rifle range, not the individual rate. We would be very interested in both the archery and the rifles. I will sign the pdf for the kids. My son is eight is there is minium age/hieght limit on the rifles?

I think a raffle is a great Idea, I'd participate.. although I haven't really got any spare stuff, I'll have a dig around and see if I can come up with something, I think Woodstock's idea of the proceeds going to BcUK is a good one, he's right, if it wasn't for all the hard work done by Tony and the gang we wouldn't be here and the server switch was probably pretty expensive for a site this size, I know it was when I moved my sites and they are pretty small.

If this goes ahead, then we need to know who to give the stuff to and the money for the draw...

Decorum, you're sorting out site fees, the rifle range and archery, I don't think it's fair to ask you to do this unless you really want to?

Otherwise I think it would be a good idea if someone nominated themselves to be raffle leader :)

That's correct - the fee is for the use of the range for an hour (whether it's one or twelve people)

All part and parcel of being the organiser :deal: . I've no problem sorting the raffle bits - although, to ensure fairness is seen to be in practice, I think that at least one other person should be involved.
Because of the growth in numbers at our Meets I'm going to have to have a list for this one - just to keep track of payments, change, activities etc - so sticking who's paid for entry (and how many tickets) into the raffle isn't any extra effort.

decorum - both - if needed to make up numbers.

Anyone else?

IMPORTANT NOTE!:

Whilst I'm remembering - There is a legal requirement for using airrifles. Each participant must declare (and sign a form) stating that there is no legal restriction on them using any form of fire arm. This is the pdf file (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/Rifle%20Application.pdf) that needs to be filled out - parents need to sign for the children.
If you do not fill out and sign the form(s) you, or your child, will not even be allowed to pick a rifle up. - This note refers solely to using the airrifles and does not apply to archery.

Thanks for the offer - on the whole sorting stuff out, in the (long) time frame we're working with, is a bit like a 'Texas Pick-Up' mixed with Matrix 'bullet time'.

There's no rush as the forms need to be handed in on the day of the activity - so I've no need for them for a month and a bit. If the forms are dated more than a day or so prior to the activity the site will (probably) ask for another to be filled in.

Nice offer - but we (and the site) need to be on the 'up and up'. I know that the site want a spare key and they're looking to get one - the fact that we use the site on a fairly regular basis, show respect and put the logs back without being asked should give the site a bit of help in the matter.

The car park is by the Archery Range in the bottom left corner of the site pic.

http://www.roughclose.org.uk/img/lg_RCMap2.jpg

You've put yourself down for the archery - is this for just you or your +1 (poss2) as well?

Arrival time??? Nominally about 5 pm-ish. If anyone wants or needs to arrive earlier I need to know so I can make sure that someone's available to unlock the lower gates. Added to this is the day visit fee (up to 3 Hours - £1.10 & up to 6 Hours - £2.20) which is on top of the £3.60 per person per night.

Post# 21 of this thread - the date hadn't been agreed at the time and you weren't sure you could make it.

What were the dates again?

I've had a bad day and that's just given me a chuckle - look a bit more closely at some of my posts (Hint: closely observe the title lines :lmao: )

Decorum,

Thanks, it's me and one other, 2 tents and 2 for the archery and air rifles please.

May sound a silly question but i've never done archery before and i was wandering if the bows are left or right handed ? I would have to use the bow with a left handed stance.

They cater for both right and left handers on the archery. I was watching the safety briefing for one group and the instructor asks that question of everyone.

Mesquites' answer's spot on - the site caters for left and right hand shooters. Although I've not seen them in a while, they used to have ambidextrous bows too.

Even if you can't be there the whole time you could always pop in for a couple of hours - whatever suits you.

Hi,

Good to have you coming back,

You're now on my tally sheet for the activities.

As chance would have it Gwhtbushcraft's taken us to a total of 16 asking to do archery and/or rifles. The max number per session is 12 and as mentioned before, I believe the 'Go's - value - cost' ratio works best at 6 to 8. I'm camping on site this weekend and I'll book the sessions then (two 1 hour sessions of both) - If anyone else wants to use the ranges you need to say so before Friday - I'll stick a 'reserves' shootinng list onto the postings for anyone expressing an interest from friday onwards.

There is a silver lining though; While you are all gathered round the fire supping Stags Breath and devouring bunnies etc I will be gathered round a pub table supping and nice pint (or three) of Broadside (for the uninitiated the beer of the gods - imho) and devouring an unfeasably large lump of beef, or pig, or fish... Then there's the old mans' collection of 30+ single malts to browse through - by which time I will not be anyware near as think as you drunk I will be (the old ones are the best)

talking of ale, Broadside is good but i like Hobgoblin as well.Agreed - Hobgoblin is nice, but Broadside (IMO) does not tavel that well, so unless you are drinking it within 10 miles or so of the brewery (and I will be) you aren't getting it's full potential, so I'll stick to my guns on that one.

Please say if you have a preference for doing one or the other activity first - by posting in this thread only. The cost of the each session will be split equally between the number of people using the range (With eight people this works out as £3.13 per person on the rifle range, £2.75 per person on the archery range and £5.88 per person for those who uses both ranges). For obvious reasons I'm going to group family units together.

I forgot to mention that I was being lectured at by a vegetarian*.

The last vegetarian who tried to lecture me used the most simple of organisms, the single celled aomeba as an example of a peaceful way of co-existance - he wound up not even being able to prove that he wasn't a colony of aomeba!

* I have no problems with anyone being, or becoming, a vegetarian. I do however have a problem with those who try to enforce their own beliefs and doctrines on others - whatever those beliefs may be and whatever method they use.

Been having a bit of a natter behind the scenes and we've come to the conclusion that the Meet raffle should be mentioned again.

It's purely voluntary and all proceeds will be going to BcUK to help fund the running of this site.
We don't want anyone to give away expensive kit nor do we want you to give away kit that you routinely use or need - unless you're horrendously rich :naughty: .
If you'd like to take part but are a bit short on kit and/or inspiration, then have a look through the articles section of this site or do a search on 'Bran Tub' and see if there's anything you fancy having a go at making.

Don't go out and buy kit specifically for the raffle - that isn't what this is about and it could completely wipe out what we're trying to do.

Please remember:
Once the raffle is done and dusted there's no going back.

Anyone else up for donating?

While I'm on should I bring anymore of the eco gel tins I had last time?

I will need some for the meet for myself and could bring some spares along if anyone wanted any.
If they are the same price as last time they cost me/you 85p with the vat.

Let me know via pm if you do want some brought to the meet so this thread doesn't get clogged up.
if everyone wants some I could start a midlands meet group buy type thing.

While I'm on should I bring anymore of the eco gel tins I had last time?

For those who don't haven't come across these before they're tins of sugar cane alcohol. They ignite and extinguish quite easily. Although the tin is a little bit bigger than a trangia burner the container cools more rapidly.

Hi all,

I'm up for the raffle so i'll bring some stuff for it, nothing expensive though as funds are tight at the moment.

Also,

I will be bringing some birch bark ( can't remember how much though) and some interesting eucalyptus bark from my tree in the garden (got my 4yr old collecting it yesterday), it burns well and gives off a lovely aroma. We'll see if anyone has a use for it ??

Very, very generous Bernie with the knife, respect mate.:wow1:

There's no need to overstretch yourself - there can be a great difference between expense and value.

I'll give an example:

Two people meet,
One has spare flint,
The other has spare tinder fungus,
When they part, they can both start a fire.

eucalyptus bark from my tree in the garden ...... . We'll see if anyone has a use for it ??

Oh, definately :D

I'd got you in on the original list in post# 124 but, for some reason, didn't transfer you to #131 :dunno: :o . Because you'd drawn my eye to the error I checked my tally sheet. Thanks for the correction.

It's a good idea. However I'm loathe to rely on people bringing unspecified stuff on speculation - at some point we'd be bound to get 40kg of baking spuds with little to go with them :lmao: added to this is is the 'I've brought all this and he/she only brought along ...... ' senario; It's happened before - the lack of 'stuff' was down to lack of confidence and they confided to thinking 'I've only brought this and .....' . With a 'possible' 30 - 40 coming we won't know what we have until we're there and so don't know what we'll need pot wise.

this is a bit of a tribute to my mum who has been diagnosed with cancer of the lung which is non-operative and a was a great campaigner for human rights and spent years at protest's up and down the country

I don't mind sorting the meat out again although I realise I got way too much last time so I should budget on a lower price?
I have looked back in the post and it looks like there will be around 35 attending?
At £1 per head I can get a reasonable variety of game and vermin + whatever I can catch the night before, probably, weather depending a fair haul !
All bought meat is from http://www.gamedealers.net/ he is a nice guy who buys and sells locally caught meat, so fresh it still wriggles!
I'll be bringing a dutch oven, think it's 6 liter, as I want to have a go at a bush curry, this will be on top of the food quota.
Is Wayland bringing his cauldron, it will be a struggle with out it? Also a fair sized pot to cook some rice in would be a genius idea.
Does anyone grow any veggies they can bring along, and does my meat suggestion sound ok?

These are my true and honest impressions - although Bernie has been kind enough to make and donate this knife he has asked for absolutely nothing in return.

First impressions?

Is it enough to say that even if I don't win there's now a really big temptation to save up and buy one anyway?
Or to go even further and say that I'd possibly go for a custom jobbie or even consider a commission?
And this is without even using it!
I've not done any kind of testing - at all!
I've only held it and it oozes quality - by the gallon.

Ooh - close one! If I'd been able to get on the net this morning you'd be kicking yourself :lmao: .

I've forgot to mention something important!

So that people can use their new items (or receive instructions in their safe use) the raffle will take place shortly after breakfast on the Saturday Morning and the 'sharps' raffle tickets will be just ONE GREAT BRITISH POUND EACH - the non - sharps raffle tickets will be 50 pence each.

So that there can be no signs of impropriety (legality issues with supplying knive etc) tickets for the 'sharps' raffle will only be sold to those who have already an 18th Birthday.

Because it is my error and because he posted first addo WILL be allowed to both donate and enter the raffle - most situations and problems are solvable.

Those who can't turn up until after the raffle can (providing they've pledged, paid and got a 'winning' ticket) take their prize(s) home with them; but conversely, if we put the raffle off for too long then it could be a case of chasing people up for their for addresses or possibly up the drive :D . I'd rather trust people to honour a pledge to buy tickets than to try to get hold of someones address and send it on - i.e. the possibility of ongoing work on the site causing access problems or that people who win are intermittent users of the site. We've looked at the possibility of a sudden influx of interest of attending the Meet. This isn't something that we'd be against, but I'd not be a happy bunny if someone, who hadn't already posted their interest, posted 'Can't be there until Midday Sunday - looking forward to the raffle' :( :tapedshut :bandit:.

Reminder time :D

The site requires that all those who shoot on the rifle range fill in and hand over this (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/Rifle%20Application.pdf) form prior to being allowed to even pick up an air rifle - N.B. each form covers just one person.

Because of the nature of the form and the reasons for having to fill one in, the fact that you've filled it out for this Meet won't cover you for any future Meets.

The good news is that there are absolutely no forms to fill out for the archery.

Keep the forms some where safe - please don't hand them to me as I probably won't be at the sessions to give them to the range officer.

Remember to take the forms to the range - No form - No shoot - No exceptions.

Each form must be legible - if your hand writing looks like the death throes of an arthrytic spider please fill it out on the computer, print it off and sign it.

The forms need to be handed over to those running the sessions when you get there; for legal reasons they can't rely on trust, word of mouth, lists or memory for who is ok to shoot.

On a serious note, has the recent rainfall turned the site into a swamp, or is it still reasonably firm underfoot?

No idea - yet!
It shouldn't be too bad though as the bit we'll be using is mulch/mud over clay and is a bit raised. It's the lower and/or clay topped areas which take the time to dry out. It'd be a good idea to take gaiters though - or, failing that, wellies - as many of the tracks which surround the pitch, do get swamped and can take weeks to drain/dry out properly.

I've purposely left the 'Saturday Special' alone to see whether it developed - it seems to be spluttering :lmao: . Unless we have a complete foodie(s) with us Ithink that it can be a bit unfair to 'tie' a small number of folk to the fire area for one third of the day (based on 8hours asleep and 5 hours sorting the roast and veg).

Although I want to give folk the chance to get the chance to use their 'winnings' if they wish, I have nothing against holding a mini-raffle a bit later on. If you're in the position where you'd need to pre-order tickets and would like some - just multi-P.M the quantity to myself, Mesquite and woodstock (please don't post quantity in this thread!) - Prices: Non-sharps raffle - 50p per ticket & sharps raffle is £1 per ticket

Heh, no kidding!

Middlemud is worse!!!!

Generally in past the communal eating that goes on tends to be various people bring good/wild/wierd/local foods to give other people tastes, a fat stew pot is useally a nice thing. You put anything(except cheep burgers) in a stew pot. Once numbers go above 10 mouths catering training and catering size cooking pots become more or less required to get a dish right unless its stew. And i agree with decorum that is lot pressure on one person either to bring the untensils or do the cooking. I have cooked for 22 people over a campfire it is not that easy. I useally bring some wild food (veggies and fruits) but I can't relibily provide a single dish for a large number people. Well maybe nettles and sowthistle. I just think the food should be kept informal.

If you have issues carrying the pot woodstock i might be able to ask the hubby to pick it up in car if the pot is in coventry.

GRAND SAUSAGE COOK OFF

Wayland and I were going to have a sausage cook off between us on the Friday night of the meet but we thought it would be a bit more fun if others joined in as well.

Rules are very simple and are as follows:

1) 6 sausages to be cooked of your favourite variety
2) Sausages may be cooked any way the entrant wishes to,
3) No sauces or other 'flavour enhancers' to be used other than what is in the sausage.
4) Entrants can enter more than one variety but there must be 6 cooked in each entry.
5) £1 per entry, funds to go into the BcUK raffle fund.
6) Judging to be done by I don't know who or how (other than eating them) :D

No need to say you'll enter it or anything, just turn up with your sausages on the Friday night.

Off M69 and onto A 46,
Follow A 46 to its juntion with the A 45,
Follow A 45 to Tile Hill - It's quite a large junction and has a Sainsbury supermarket on it.
Turn left on to Tile Hill Lane and follow the road for 'a couple of miles'.
At the lights at theTexaco petrol station (The junction looks like a cross-roads - it isn't!) go straight on up onto Tanners Lane.
About a mile and a half up Tanners Lane there is a phone box on the right - the entrance to the site is just meters before it.

Hello folks
does anyone have a spare tarp I could maybe use at midlands meet please.
I use a dpm issue tarp but I may need one for my lad. I have a poncho but after a soak testing it appears to be slightly teabagish:)
I aim to get one eventually but cant decide which size. I feel a large 4m x 3m maybe better so we can both get under it but I havn't made my mind up yet and dont want to rush in and end up buying another one when I change my mind.:D

If someone would be kind enough to take a spare for me that would be great.
It would need to be big enough for a small dude in a hammock and waterproof, I guess 2mx 2.85m.

Thanks in advance

If it does i think i'll just bring a small tent and tarp to go over it.

Strange question but are the rifles scoped or iron sighted ? Used to using scope you see.

Bit of fun, what about a prize for the range users who get the best grouping ??

I can't see it being a problem - as long as you don't want to pitch next to Bodge :D - the big grey thing mentioned above is about 5 x 5 :lmao: .

A perfectly valid question - they're iron sights.

Might be a bit late to sort this for this weekend - but definately something to consider a a future possiblity.

Thanks Dec,

i think i'll bring both tents just in case, been having man flu last week and a bit this week so it might be a bit drafty in the tipi, but i'll see.

Get the chance to use my old trangia which i unearthed from the garage last night and after straightening the top it doesn't look in bad shape considering it's 20+ yrs old !!

Boots dubbin'ed up, stove sorted, tents sorted, tarp sorted, now for the food and drink, haha. might think about throwing in a few spare clothes as well. Oh and my new hat !!

Is it worth bringing gaiters as previous post suggested ? just checked Met office site and it looks like light rain showers all weekend but sunny intervals on Sunday, typical.:(

Is someone bringing a bow saw?

I recall at the last meet some of the larger tree trunks proved too much for a Laplander...

Don't worry.

I was stoning cherries and deseeding rosehips the other day when i thought a tiny long spoon would do this job very easly, then i thought the size of spoon would small enough to keep on a keyring, and then i thought of viking earspoons. I don't know if i was a viking woman I would find more uses for a ear spoon then just cleaning my ears, or maybe not.

Makes sense, I'm sure they would have been used for all sorts of things, and the little sets with tweezers and toothpicks look like Viking multitools to me.

I'll be bringing a couple with me for us to use.

Woodstock and I are planning to get there around 3'ish. I think Dec was going to let people at the site know that there's a few people coming a long way and may be arriving early.

I am hoping woodstock can bring a couple of bunnies and maybe a tree rat or two, I will try for the same and I have some muntjack in the freezer already, if we budgeted on 50p -£1 per head I could buy enough to make a pretty large cauldrons worth?
If the bunnies do happen I am quite happy to show anyone interested how to skin and gut them, it's not as messy or smelly as it sounds.[/QUOTE]

Im going out in the morning do you want the rabbits skin on cleaned or do you what me to leave one for a demo as if its left intact it taints the meat, So if you let me know how you would like them

You're a Snot Goblin too then? - at the moment my nasal passages could supply the world with lemon curd :yuck:.

That's the beauty of a trangia - no moving parts to fail. OK ... you might have to replace the burner cap seal :D - especially if a scout's been near it :banghead:

It won't harm :umbrella:

Erm ..... I may have dropped the ball on this one :o . I don't think I checked because, if memory serves, the earliest arrival mentioned was in the afternoon - which wouldn't be a problem;
I'll know better when I can get hold of my Father-in-Law - Approx same time as last time Wayland?

I am planning on getting there around 2-3ish all being well, I'm coming from the close side of Milton Keynes if anyone needs a ride?

I'll be doing my normal variety - open fire (if man flu allows :o ) and gas for near-instant brew-ups - I've finally remembered to buy a maintenance kit for my aging MSR so that'll probably be going along for some much needed practice too.

and how many are bringing a Bush Buddy

I don't have one :( .

Ouch Stuart, that's painful for you both :( Hope your wife recovers quickly without any lasting damage. Fingers crossed you'll make it to the next moot without any mishap.

Sorry to hear that. Please wish her a speedy recovery.

Swmbo did something very similar so I really can understand that :yikes: .

No need to sulk - Take good care of her, the shock will require a bit of pampering; now think 'Brownie Points' ..... and with that think 'Which bit of kit would I like?' :o

see you all next time hopefully

Yup, there'll be a next one  .
